She's a superstar in the making mark my words.....she's only 20 years old.

Maybe but does anyone really care about Women's basketball/WNBA?

8 Badminton players from South Korea, Indonesia and China have been charged by the sports governing body for tanking.
They deliberately serve into the net, or hit long or wide.
They had already qualified apparently wanting to lose to secure an easier draw in the next round.
One of them said "We've already qualified, so why would we waste energy? It's not necessary to go out hard again when the knockout rounds are tomorrow."
What a joke!!!

Obviously their is something wrong with the system which should be changed.
If you finish higher you should have an easier path to the finals, why reward the losers with a better draw next round?

I played Badminton a few times...it'd bloody hard work I tell ya.

Jukes,
I don't blame the players for "tanking" though as similar to our AFL...the system encourages this type of behaviour.
The best way for the badminton tournament to go is a knockout, similar to tennis tournaments.

Just a gripe...can the bloody Aussies wear yellow swim caps instead of a mish-mash of yellow or white?
I'm so used to looking for the yellow cap in the pool

Hasn't it been awesome. The mens 56kg competition was awesome with the korean winning from the "B" group with a C&J of 3x bodyweight was incredible. Only the fifth man to do so in history.
I am a competitive powerlifter ( bench, squat, deadlift) at about 100kg and wouldn't dream of lifting what they do. I can squat and dead well over 200kg and can clean 140kg and would not go close to getting it overhead. Amazing!

yeah, weightlifting and in particular the korean has been the highlight for me so far. Watching the women is great as well. Some amazing strength.

Well done on squatting over 200kegs, BTW.

Interesting story developing regarding the apparent "tanking" of some badminton players. Amazing how this has cropped up when the topic is again relevant in AFL terms.

I watched all of the Opals game vs Brazil, they were a lot better this game.
Still offensively struggled, we were very good defensively in the first half.
Great to see Cambage play a very good game...she set the tone on the first 1/2 and was the dominant player imo.
Finished with 17pts 10 boards,Jackson was great late when we needed her.....she stepped up.

A great race, beaten by .01. Very humble in defeat, I think he has had to do a lot of growing up the last few days. Good on him.

I've been really enjoying the Fox coverage with so many choices but it's been a weird games. People putting themselves on pedestals, suspicion, cheating, suspensions, tears, bad sportsmanship, media assassination. Our papers were sticking it up the Poms but even they've overtaken us in the medal count now. Worst is our swimmers have been left behind by the rest of the world. :(

The Pom's will pick up more medals when the Athletics come on Rosy. But your right,no shortage of controversy.

Track cycling starts tonight, I can't wait. Gonna be a few sleepless nights coming up. We should hopefully grab a couple of golds, Anna Meares and the pursuit team will be tough to beat.

Also making our way to the big boys in the weightlifting, gonna see some massive weights being thrown around.

Threw $20 on Steve Hooker in the pole vault at 15s. Will be a nice collect if he can get his *smile* together.

Spent a couple of days in Ballarat this week and the motel I was at didn't have the 8 Foxtel channels. By the second night I was sick of the garbage being served up by Ch 9. Lots of self promotion and swimming and not much else! Very frustrating. On the plus side I can tell you all about every show coming to Ch 9 in the next 6 months - and none of them look remotely interesting or worth watching. In the end turned the volume off and didn't bother staying up late or getting up early.

Re the Aussie swimming team and in particular Magnussen it is dificult to have empathy for him when he was the one mouthing off before he had performed. Just goes to show the best way to make a statement is through perormance (actions) not words! Think it very unfair to taint the Chinese girls magnificent performance in the Medley. No one said a word when Stephanie Rice improved about 6 seconds in Beijing in the same event?

pity about the Missile but geez
left himself wide open with his
"brace yourselves" declaration
before the games.

good on him anyway for grabbing a silver.

I think we'll have another gold in the individual Show Jumping.
Edwina Alexander has been winning all the International tournaments in Europe this year and is a gold medal favourite.
She's a terrific rider and not too bad on the eye either.

I wouldn't worry too much about Great Britain overtaking us in the medals.
It was always going to happen being it their home games and usually the home nation pump a lot of $$$ into their sports programs leading up to the actual games.
Add a home crowd cheering them on as well, they will be hard to beat in many events, even with a slow start to their campaign.

Its also one of our smallest teams for 20 odd years and I just think in sport in general, the rest of the world has caught up to us...cricket, rugby, swimming, etc.

I think during the 90's and early 00's we lead the way in preparation, sports sciences, recovery, etc and I think many nations have adopted some of our practices as well as poached some of our coaches and trainers.
Nations that were once not even good at a sport are now competing at the highest level in those sports.

When was the last time France won gold medals in swimming?
This time they've won 3 golds compared to our 1, so far.

Regarding the badminton.
What a farce.
So the badminton tournament is designed to allow these players to "tank" as its in their best interest to so they can try and get an easier draw in the finals, and when they take the opportunity to be smart and take advantage of this system, they are kicked out?
Ridiculous.
Any smart athlete would do exactly that and who should be kicked out are the people who decided that a round-robin format was the best way to go when it should have been a knockout tournament similar to tennis.
Athletes punished for bureaucratic bungling

I've been interested in the men's hockey. Rick Charlesworth has to be one of the best coaches of a team game going around. The guy's got that team playing with absolutely no mercy. In both their games they've been well on top, but have been giving it everything right until the final siren to win by more. The Tigers could learn some lessons from that. Don't ever stop putting on the pressure, once you get someone down, you keep them there. Maybe next season we could convince Charlesworth to impart some of his knowledge and philosophy on what it takes to be a successful team to Richmond.

I'm fairly sure Charlesworth played a role at Fremantle in the mid 2000's, didn't bring a lot of success although in fairness the cattle were not good either!

Agree.

He was also nearly a second slower than some of his previous swims. After being cocky only has himself to blame. Nerves obviously got the best of him. If he swam at his best, might have 1 gold maybe 2.
