Nankervis !!

On Nank's R4 game, I have been a qualified English fan for a couple of years now but I hadn't factored his being a toff in the damp. He outclassed Nank on the weekend.

English is on AA pace so far, no shame in lowering your colours to him and if he was playing with a ankle injury even more so.

I was taking some notes on the game with one of my kids who is trying to get into the industry, and they picked up he did an unusually long rotation in the second quarter. Might be a coincidence or might have been a restrap and a jab.

English did the long quarter, TBR?

Does your kid have any trouble understanding your shorthand?
Because we could do with some help.

We got smashed at clearance but the most overlooked facet of it has been the quality of English’s tap work.

You give the Bont a headstart and it’s over. English made the Bont look good.

Bont looked good anyway, I got a very clear look at a tap in the middle that Nank clearly got with no influence from the Footscray ruck, Bont caught it on the full and ran off for a clearance.

Not sure where our players were but they were nowhere near where Nank hit the ball. Maybe our mids aren't reading the ruck well or it is positioning, but something is not right.

There's been no chemistry between Nank and our mids. I think Soldo does a better job in this area but is worse around the ground.

On the AFL app you can watch individual player edits, all there highlights condensed. English gave some silver service but gee we gave Bont so much runway. If I get time I’ll do a rundown. The GWS boys defensively at stoppages are average, good hunters but don’t guard a man.

The Age is reporting that Nank has signed a contract extension. No announcement by the club that I can find?

Opening line is interesting: no longer on the market??

from The Age:

TIGER NOT UP FOR GRABS

Richmond co-captain Toby Nankervis is no longer on the market.
Nankervis quietly reached a contract trigger in the opening rounds that automatically locks him in for next season, at a time he is preparing to be out for an extended period recovering from syndesmosis surgery.
The former Swan, who has played 113 of his 125 games for the Tigers, has become a key on and off-field piece of Richmond’s success, including playing in their 2017, 2019 and 2020 flags.

This year promises to be a transitional one for the Tigers, with champion veterans Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt, and ex-Roos star Robbie Tarrant likely playing their last seasons.
Noah Balta is nearing a contract extension and Jack Graham triggered another year with his appearance in Saturday’s loss to Western Bulldogs, but Dylan Grimes, Nathan Broad, Hugo Ralphsmith, Marlion Pickett and Kamdyn McIntosh are among those out of contract.

Nank was in the coaches votes the 1st 3 rounds, we won 1, drew 1 and lost 1. At half time rd 4 we were leading the doggies. Around half time Nank did his ankle. English dominated the 2nd half, we haven't won since and 3 out of the 4 games the opposition ruck has got coaches voted.

I don't think all that is a coincidence.

Ruuusty. Honestly played like he should have had a run in the VFL.

Ryan also looked displaced after last week.

Hmmm.
Even before he went out with injury, his performance was below average.

That’s partly to do that he’s consistently undersized competing against much bigger rucks. At best he can negate but unfortunately doesn’t create nearly enough clearance opportunities for our mids.

However it’s around the ground that really compounds the issue because he’s dropping marks he just has to take. Twice last night, it directly led to goals. Couple that with the reluctance and ability to play forward when not in the ruck.

I see Ryan has the long term first ruck option once he has the body and consistent marking ability to do it. Nankervis is at the crossroads in my opinion.

In his first couple of years I said we are going to break him with the load he carried. In the 5 seasons since he has played 60 out of a possible 100 games. And with long lay off's cannot expect him to return in top gear. His missed games are a crucial as the poor ones like last night.

Nanks should have been the sub and Miller retained in the side,

I was watching the ruck set up last night. It didn't work anywhere near as well as last week. Nank was terrible up forward as well.
Not sure what the answer is.
