Matthew Clarke

The likes of Miller, RCD, Ross , Dow, Cumberland, Martyn, Ralphsmith, Biggie and Ryan have found it hard to force their way into a very good side.
If the selected side against the Hawks is anything to go by, they will probably get more opportunities next season. We will then be able to get a better handle on how a lot of Clarke's draft picks stack up.
If they were good enough they would have played more games by now. Particularly those drafted in 2017 and 2018. Our picks from 2019 and 2020 haven't had much chance to play due to VFL shutdowns but the others have. What they've shown so far is not very impressive. Even Martyn, Ralphsmith look limited. While Miller, RCD and Ross look like back-up type players at best.

It's hard too dislodge premiership players, we will know more at the end of 2022.

Interesting in the podcast that Clarke seemed to hesitate when talking about chol and cj re trades and on trading our second pick

Clarke is a pro, and basically said nothing.

All options are on the table.

later picks will be impacted on how we go with earlier picks

will love to trade up if we can

3 clear best players, then a blanket of others,

Athletic testing is yet to come in so our order not finalized

I was however very happy to hear that he rates the draft, and that he has seen enough of the Vic youngsters to be able to appraise them properly.

I think we are keeping our picks,

Besides a fluke pick here and there.
He hasnt hit gold with any high picks.
Losing him wouldn't bother me.
Huggins instead of Ryan, Talyor or Allen. Is sackable any way

He said clear top 4 so GWS pick 2 (which will become pick 4) is something we may target for 7 and 16.

He also wasn't convincing in saying he'd seen enough of the Vic players. He tried to be positive but you could tell he was concerned. Remember these guys have played ~10 games over 2 years now. Not a lot to go on.

So if he gets a pick wrong then he's a dud recruiter.

But if he gets a pick right then it's a fluke.

Peak Zips post.

He hasn’t had a top 10 pick.

CJ, Balta and Baker is a great haul for one draft. 3 10 year players.

So FJ selected 19 premiership players , be a few red faces if we went back thru the logs
FJ's issue was his very poor first round selections. He built his reputation off hitting later picks.

Notable first round misses include: JON, C Ellis, B Lennon & R Conca. All were top 12 picks and major busts.

Not to mention the very poor selections of Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt, Edwards, Rance, Vlastuin and B. Ellis. Amazing he lasted as long as he did.

Cotchin and Martin we easy..
Cotchin or Kuszer.
With Martin it all depended on what Melbourne was doing.
We didnt trade pick 3 to Sydney because Martin or Trengrove were the midfielders the club was chasing.
Sydney wanted Martin and they ended up picking Rohan and Jetta
Riewodlt and Big V were good picks.
Edwards and Rance were picks 19 and pick 26.
And Ellis.

Im with you.
His picks especially around picks 7 to 15 have been disasters.
He is lucky because he has plucked some from deep in the draft and the Rookie draft has saved him.

Please do some research to show if he's better, worse or on par with other recruiters. I think you'll find FJ was an average recruiter in the first round compared to other clubs, maybe just above.

I think if you take into account that FJ was basically a one man band for a lot of that time, his record is very strong.

A few people either have short memories, or unrealistic expectations.

Unless the player fell into his hands, he basically always missed good kids after our pick.
Imagine now, just after 3 flags.
Having 2x Ellis, Huggins and Cd waiting to get into the side.
We would stay up
But 3 are gone and the last one cant run out half a game at the age of 20.
Either trade the early picks or go get better at recognising talent.
