Matthew Clarke

Recruiting since 2017 (imho).
2017 ND Higgins (R1), CCJ, Balta, Naish all R2), Miller. Rookie: Baker. 1st rounder Higgins a bust, F/S Naish a bust. CCJ tick, Balta boom, Baker boom. Plenty of quality at, and well after, Higgins pick (Sam Taylor would have been nice). Overall: didn't quite nail it.
.....

2017 looks ridiculously good.
What are our expectations ? That we nail every pick? Or that we build a strong team over many drafts?

2 players already locked in the starting 22 (Balta and Baker) and looking like they will be stars of the comp. 10 year players.
CJ has shown good signs this year.
Higgins a solid AFL player but didn't stay at the club, is that the responsibility of Matthew Clarke?
Naish no. Miller a maybe.

Picking 2 stars every year that play 10 years gives great continuity.
If CJ makes it then its a winning draft for us

Higgins is a good player but the wrong one for us.

In effect, we traded picks 17 (2017), 21 (2020) and 62 (2021) for Geelong's pick (14-18) and pick 28 this year .
I think it is picks 17 (2017), 26 (2020) and 62 (2021) for Geelong's pick (14-18) and pick 28 this year.

seems like a break even, depending of course on who we get with these picks. Given Higglet wanted to leave for whatever reason that's OK by me.

Im concerned about Clarke. If he doesn’t nail this draft it could be a looong rebuild
Agree - the jury is out on him. He has pulled the wrong rein on a number of key picks to date. Meanwhile the likes of Port Adel, Melb and the Dogs continually get it right. Nail this one or he can exit stage left.

Yeah basically its back to where we were and another hit at it

Clarke seems to like going wild card with our firsts and best available with the rest. We may get lucky at some point in the first round using this method but I’m hoping for some solid, conservative picks this year. Though playing it safe is not the Richmond way

I'll give you Port, but Melbourne have had numerous top 10 picks. Same with the Dogs, they luck into father/sons and the next Buddy Franklin as a NGA pick. The best recent Western Bulldogs picks are either father/sons or you guessed it top 10 picks.

This will be Clarke's first top 10 pick ever.

So far Clarke has one decent ND pick - Balta and one decent rookie - Baker. Outside of that its very grim reading. CJ, RCD & Dow are ok picks but when u consider how well some of the guys picked just after them are going they look like poor selections at this point.

Franks biggest busts were Conca, Lennon and Corey Ellis. All round 1 selections. He more than made up for it with later picks and rookie selections though. Clarke hasn't done that yet.

I said i was concerned about Clarke, but didnt realize it was this bad.

For anyone on the fence about Clarke I urge you to go and look at the last 4-5 drafts. In particular, look at our picks and then look at what was taken after our picks. Yes, better players were taken at later picks but it’s not like the next dozen were all superstars and we picked out the sole dud.

For whatever reason, a few posters around here expect our recruiters to find hall of famers at every pick, regardless of where that pick was in the draft or the overall quality of the draft in any particular year. Said posters will then cite cherry picked examples of how other clubs completely dominate the draft year after year, conveniently neglecting to show what picks those clubs had, what it cost them to get those picks or how many picks those clubs actually had. It’s a miracle we won a single premiership, let alone three of the last four…

The only prerequisite I have is
I’d be more than happy with drafting only 2 Hall of Famers each year. As long as we drafted a Legend every 10 years. Any other draftees need to finish in the top 10 in the JD medal after a minimum 3 years experience. A Coleman medallist every now and then should be available at our picks.
Our recruiting and List Management only have one main job to do. No excuses.

Gee a lot of dh gave FJ a hard time , looks to be the guru to me , I caution the opinion of couch potatoes over the experts that’listed a dynasty . Surely Blair would still be involved , would be a shared and diverse opinion where we use our draft picks

The likes of Miller, RCD, Ross , Dow, Cumberland, Martyn, Ralphsmith, Biggie and Ryan have found it hard to force their way into a very good side.
If the selected side against the Hawks is anything to go by, they will probably get more opportunities next season. We will then be able to get a better handle on how a lot of Clarke's draft picks stack up.

So what players that were overlooked in this period were going to actually make out senior team ? Take into account the no vfl level to hone their skills either since the start of 2020.
