Matt white

I'm an unashamed fan of Matty, if anyone thinks he doesn't have a spot in out best 25 for the next few years is either naive about the state of our list or how hard is is to find better replacements

My views of guys like White, Tuck, Foley and Moore have changed somewhat in the past eight weeks as I observe the gap between those who can use it and those who turn it over. The contrast with the likes of Joel, Cotchin, Lids and Cousins is acute.

Don't get me wrong, I love the guys I have named. But I see them a bit differently now. Turnovers seem to cost so much more than they did 5 years ago. The Hawthorn strategy of selecting guys who can kick (sharply exemplified by the Dew/Guerra drafts) compared with our focus on athletes (Jacko, White, King...) has been telling

Absolutely 100% spot on. This has stood out to me as well. I want to keep Matty for the moment but only as a depth player to cover injuries.

Hawthorn may have recruited mostly guys who can kick since Pelchen arrived but they've retained players with iffy disposal in their midfield.

If a guy is a genius extractor, you could probably tolerate mediocre disposal.

However the ratio of mediocre to quality disposal at RFC is around 1:1 (or more). I'd argue it's around 1:3 at Hawthorn

Limited footballer - runs fast but doesnt do much else. Brain and skill doesnt match foot speed

Foley had an 86% efficiency rating this week week.  Whitey didn't play much but has had mid to high 80s efficiency regularly.  Both tend to have higher contested possessions too. Cousins and Cotch have had mid to low 70s percentages. Surely the efficiency stats mean something?

Stat efficiency can be contrived somewhat.

A player who has 10 dinky backwards and sideways kicks and hits the target cos no pressure on his target gets good efficiency.

Modern stats in footy are overblown imo.

I agree with that to a degree craigybabes, and think Joel's stats are often flattered by that style of play, but I don't think Whitey and Nathan are overly guilty of it.

It appears not around here Rosy. Apparently there are only two blokes on our list who can kick Cotch and Lids. But you can't say bad things about the Trent around these woods. ;D

And lukey, if you think Joel's footskills are acute, you're probably right. Nobody on our list kicks better to an opponent than Joel, although Simmo's not far behind him.

Good point 4eva. I totally forgot that we are supposed to bag Joel on this site. I will be more careful next time.

Don't let them bully you Lukeanddad. Good on you for giving your honest opinion.

I actually think that Bowden is a good kick as well.

Why are you guys still Richmond supporters when you hate the players so much?

Oops, and the coaches, and the board, and each other?

which just goes to show stats taken by themselves are rubbish. my eyes havent constantly lied to me over the last 3 and a half yrs.

i can categorically say i would not allow any player under 6ft on my list who cannot kick.unless they bring other outstanding redeeming attributes to the table. white doesnt. in a nut shell we have to do better.

I'll let you off with a reprimand this time lukey. But you have earn't 90 points so be careful. ;D

Some people on here have mentioned that the only reason White is getting bagged is because he missed that goal. you may be right but I think he's been pretty ordinary this year, as most have said disposal is not up to it and his decision making at times leaves me shaking my head. I think he should have been dropped atleast 4 or 5 rounds ago. When he missed that crucial goal that was the last straw for me. Should find it extremely hard to get back in the side. I don't care if he's the hardest trainer, it should not give you automatic selection
