Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

Got pipped in the last game by North Ballarats Nick Rippon.

Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

Bad luck about the Liston. Hopefully we can keep Thomas on and use him next year to give our inside mids a spell from the hurly burly for a few games.

Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

Part time player coach? Kind of like what that ex Saints guy is doing? We would have to give some more incentive to run around on rookie wages.

Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

Never thought much of Thomas, but gee, if this guy played on Sunday vs Nth, the contested possession count would have been more in line with our normal yearly numbers. Purely on hindsight alone, this guy had to play. Pair him with Miles, and and we break even in the key clearances. Even then allows Cotchin to spend time up forward with Jacobs becoming redundant as a tagger.
Interesting as he hasn't been de-listed yet.
Anyway, it's all a moot point now.

I reckon he deserves to stay.

Agree. And not just because of the retirements or it being a shallow draft. He's a top quality depth option.

Would have done a lot more than under-done guys like Edwards and Conca.

Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

Keep as a depth player given retirements of 4 experienced players. Lacks speed but could be ok in middle of winter rounds when it's cold and wet.

yep thought exactly the same thing he would have helped take the pressure of the other midfielders. Hindsight is a wonderful thing

vfl listed player, would be better

Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

Happy to have him at the club in his current role.

Plays above his pay structure. A very small 'win' or payoff for his position, but a definite win slightly above average for the cost.

I'm a fan and defender of Thomas because, guess what. He's in-and-under, wins hard contested ball, clearances and loves to tackle. Just what we lacked in the E-final where you saw how soft our mids are (except for Miles, & Cotch who struggles with tags) really compared to a comparable top-eight team. He has little polish but believed he turned it over less in AFL games this year. If he handballs it mostly, kicks it only occasionally, he's actually just what we lack. All the hype about bringing Yarran (NO) or Bennell in, just more outside players. Need to get real about what wins finals; it's not pretty outside players who finish only.

Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

I think you are selling Bennell short as regards contested possessions. A quick look at footywire indicated that he had 16 contested procession against Adelaide earlier in the year. Also against west Coast he had 7 clearances.

His averages are maybe not that high but in some games he obviously was playing an outside role so not so meaningful

He's also a hell of a lot quicker and more skilled than Thomas.

Which 4 are they? If Thomas gets another gig it will mean we haven't recruited well. He only played 2 games this year. We can't afford places being taken by ageing 2 gamers.

Will happily concede both these, but frankly, haven't studied Bennell much. Know he is top-shelf. Love to get him IF he can get his act together. I was really focussed more on Thomas. He provides grunt; he's hard at the contest, even if not highly skilled. We really lack enough of that. Have class with Cotchin, Deledio, Edwards and Ellis but were thrashed in clearances/CB/tackles.
