Marsh 1 v Collingwood

yeah - I heard that too (thought I must of mis-heard)

Just a day out at the picnic races after Big V/All Stars blockbuster. Game day 1st round just got to go with the strength with only replacement will be for Cellis. Some one with on an old head like The Big Mack (luv hm).

Result was irrelevant. Great to see some kids get a go. My thoughts:

Baker looks like he can step up again. I still think he looks like a young Ben Cousins and would love to see him in the midfield at some point

Dow looks impressive

Disappointed in Chol. Was his chance to make his mark. He doesn't impact the contest enough

Aarts looked really good. Already covers Dan Butler's omission

Not sure about Ross' lighter frame. Seemed to get knocked off the ball more than he did last year

RCD showed glimpses. I still think he is 1 to 2 years away as he still looks to be growing into his body

Disappointed in Balta. Still don't know whether he's a defender or a forward

They'll be desperate to get hold of us next week.

Will be a solid hit out I reckon, hopefully we get through unscathed injury wise.

They will be desperate as after we torched them in the GF.

Let them go at us 100 miles an hour and think they have atone for that performance.

We will have a near full strength side as they will.

No injuries and a nice hit out. Result will take care of itself.

Perspective on yesterday's game ....

POSITIVES
-----------------

1. We were in the game till the last quarter( into the last).
2. Performances of Baker, Stack, Pickett, Aarts, entire back line and Dow looked exciting.
3. Considering we had no forwards ( missing Jack & Lynch) we did well to stay with them as long as we did.
4. Had a young midfield compared to theirs.
5. No injuries.
6. Got a look at a lot of kids plus players vying to get to play next week and possibly Round 1.
7. Higgins getting through the game. Give him another game next week.

NEGATIVES
-------------------

1. Umpires, umpires, umpires. One rule for us and one rule for them. Nothing new for the past three years.
2. Performance of Balta, Garth, Chol and CCJ.
3. Our inaccuracy compared to the straight shooting , couldnt miss Pies in the first half. Second half we kick 2.8. We kick straighter and Buckley goes crazy ape style.
4. None of the second tier players showed enough for mine to get a second go against GWS apart from the ones listed in POSITIVES. Would you give Balta another go?

End of the day you could see how much it meant to Buckley's pies than the Tigers.

Got home from the game and watched the replay with Caesar, always different second time round.

Thought the Pies played very Richmond Like

Bit disappointed that a few fringes didn’t take there chance

Liked signs from Dow, CCJ, Stack, Ross and Pickett

I’d definitely keep playing Balta, though disappointing yesterday, I think his the only real tall option we have down back after Astbury who can play on the opposition stars , his going to take a while to learn that role, however I think he can be an asset in time. I’d give him Cameron next week

I dunno, the kids only seem to get two quarters at most to show their wares.

And if our VFL boys started heavy training later than most clubs (cos flag) then they’ll be as underdone as the big boys.

I reckon the we won’t know much about the kids until round 4 in the VFL.

Just read there was only 7000 there, not surprised it seemed way down on numbers from other years . Hot day and nowhere near enough shade, beer lines were excellent though

The bits and pieces I watched, it seemed the forward delivery was poor. A couple of great leads by Chol were completely wasted by his teammates poor skill.

They were saying on the radio that the ground next door would’ve been a far better option.

True or false?

Very very false, no grandstand , a 40 metre shelter, nowhere near as much room around the ground, plus the ground surface is nowhere near as good, it’s rock hard

Good hit out - 7 out (Nank with the 6 playing Friday night) - 1st major hit out - a month behind most other sides. Fringe players did not wow but did enough to cover for injuries. Big ask to step up minus the core talent. Whilst we have had a very very good last 3 years still think we get exposed by good opposition talls. Cox - Reid - and their new ruckman all did well yesterday.

Many comments re Balta - its important to groom his defensive side but for now how about throwing him on a forward flank/wing/ruck rover and just use this raw athleticism to create play. We dont want to loos that freakish ability bu plonking him behind the opposition FF/CHB every week.

The only concern i have is, tall marking opposition.
Balta isnt the answer.
And if Rance retired before the draft we could've selected more key defenders.
Fingers crossed Cj gets a chance this year.

West Coast used the tall marking options to overcome our game style. Problem for most sides they cannot do it consistently for 4 quarters

Also works much better when its 31 degrees and dry... Come winter 3-4 talls can be a liability.

Solid hit out. No injuries thank heavens unlike the Pies.

Liked Baker, Stack & Pickett. Dow also promising with his movements as other noted. Higgo ran his backside off. Lacks match fitness but will be better for it.

A fraction disappointed in 2nd year mids RCD & Ross who were a bit overwhelmed by stronger opposition. Very frustrated by Chol who just doesn’t work hard enough often enough.

I expected us to lose yesterday with that midfield & forward line so not reading much into it.

Next week will give us a better indication when our Premiership stars return. That said practice matches are just that. All about round 1..
