Marsh 1 v Collingwood

I just want a challenger to emerge this season to keep it interesting.

There's gonna be a few, GWS, WCE and the Maggots obviously..

Gee Whiz will be much better for the run this year with their side back on the park and I'd be expecting them to be hungrier, its starting to look like a matter of when not if with the Giants but hopefully it wont be happening on the Tigers watch.

The West Coasters will be dangerous and shouldn't miss the 4 this year and the Skunks will be thereabouts as much as we would all love to see them implode .

The Doggies might be the other, whilst Geesook and the Bears will have their moments thanks to their home advantages and the Bears get 2 guaranteed games against the Suns.

It will be even tougher this year and the Tigers are going to have to be at their very very best to get the chance to have another crack at back to back.

Treloar to miss round 1.

Not a strain, not "awareness"
Just a torn Hamstring

Wouldnt mind him playing in round 2 then pinging it again in the first 5 minutes leaving them one short but seriously, with his history, a 4 week layoff would be most likely outcome you would think.

He mit not be lining up against the tigers in round 2 either, as they will have to be prudent with him.

Thanks to a non functioning internet connection I only managed to see the game last night. For me, other than Broad and Baker who stood out as improved their game over the preseason, the other regulars of the firsts did what they had to but not much more in the first competitive match of the season so not too worried even though there was not a lot of evidence of game plan. Th newbies and second years also showed a few glimpses but no standouts for me. I am looking forward to a better game next against GWS when we will have our stars back and we start to gel

No Lynch. no Reiwoldt. No Martin. No Cotchin grunt & leadership. No Edwards creativity. No Houli run.

Get a grip people it was freaking early March. Quoting stats from a meaningless practice match where most of your 10 best are missing is like calling for Balme to take over early in 2019.

I just want a challenger to emerge this season to keep it interesting.

Oh right. Thanks for pointing that out. No doubt it was really tough then since Colonwood had no one playing in the state match; so just missing Beams, Greenwood, Stephenson, Langdon, Quanyor, Broomhead et al.

Why do they bother with these 'meaningless practice match(es)'? Or why do you need to defend the result, if so meaningless?

Really we should just send a deputation to Gill and ask him to give us this year's cup and flag now; I'd nominate you as the ideal leader. There is no doubt he would agree, and the other 17 clubs would be convinced too. Who could dispute this level of authority and football knowledge?

There is just no challenger.

Still 31 less is a big difference. The end part of our season last year, the winning streak we had more marks than our opposition more times than we didn't. Saying that it isn't your talls that do all the marking. Last year our top 10 markers per game in order were Vlastuin, Houli, Astbury, Grimes, Ellis, Lynch, Stack, Lambert, Short & Reiwoldt.

Collingwood have always tried to play a bit of a keepings off game against us to try and defeat our forward defensive pressure. Round 2 last year they had NINETY-SIX more marks than us. Prelim final previous year Collingwood had 49 more. Round 19 last year we had 6 more. We counteracted their game plan.
Have to say, discerning post,TL I was concerned by our poor marking differential, then noticed we suddenly started to turn it around when it really mattered, not that I'm any stats guru. I was puzzled HOW we did it though. It looks like it would be mostly due to intercept marks from our brilliant backline but it's still fascinating how we just flicked a switch and reversed the trend.

I believe it really makes a difference - " Round 19 last year we had 6 more. We counteracted their game plan."

I agree. Our game style, tackling and pressure leads to more frees against. I don't care, it's a winning formula for us.

Likewise uncontested marks against us mean squat. They can chip it around, eventually they turn it over and we score.

Disagree with you on both counts. When one team wins frees from very soft interpretations, and the other team doesn't from similar or far more noticeable infringements, questions must be asked. Often the *smile* diff in our games is close to the opp having another (ordinary) player. Eventually it will determine results with quality opposition. If we had played the Weagles side in the form of that previous H&A game for instance, in the GF.

Re marks, TL's post already invalidates your point on marking as you virtually concede in a subsequent post.

Geez leon, haven't you watched the last few years?

2019 - 17th in Marks per game differential
2018 - 15th
2017 - 14th

Hope you've caught up with TL's post. When it really mattered, so did marking, and we reversed this trend. I noticed it without analysing it that much; as I said, not much of a stats man.

But thanks for the tip. I'm lucky to have you around to 'edyacate' me re footy.

I share most of your evaluations, Craig. I also think teams like Smelborne, Cartoon, Aints and even the Suns will be better opposition and will increase their number of wins this year. So less easy opposition and more unexpected wins by these teams that will make staying in the eight that much tougher.

Let's face it, we are premiers, everyone is after us. Just comes with the territory.

Lots of contenders. GWS look like they are ready to strive for one better, they were tired after their finals campaign and we smashed them, but they will not be easy to beat. West Coast are real contenders, 2018 premiers and a very good team. Collingwood will be thereabouts, not convinced they can go all the way but clearly a chance. Footscray are interesting, clearly if they can get going they are a real threat.

Everyone will be after us and Richmond full know this and will be looking for improvement and adjustments.

Clearly we are a very good chance to go back to back, but there are plenty of contenders out there who are a good chance to knock us off. We have to make the top 4 and then things have to go right in September.

As for the practice match, it was a practice match, the only thing which concerned me was a few of the younger players didn't step up like I hoped they might. Then again, they are young, there is time.

So marks now do matter?!

In our game plan, intercept marks absolutely. That's why we pressure, to get the oppo to turn the ball over by hand or foot. And Jack and Lynch are handy up forward plucking contested marks.

What we don't do any more is the little dinky chip the ball around and keep possession. Our uncontested are either into the corridor or a switch of play.

But to return to your point, I don't give a monkey's if the opposition takes 30 more marks, good luck to 'em and I'm betting we'll still be ahead on the scoreboard.

I think the marking stat comment was fair enough. That's an area against Collingwood in particular that they've taken advantage of to trounce us in the past. But yes it is a practice match with significant players out for both sides and many youngsters playing. Overall, the performance in this game will have very little influence on our competitiveness come Round 1.

Dunstall just said another club tried to recruit Pickett over the off season but it didn’t happen only due to lack of salary cap space.

Surely that’s not right. Pickett was always tied to us wasn’t he?
I think dunstall meant, during the 2019 SPP when we signed Weller and stack.
So we grabbed Pickett as a mid season signing.

Hard to believe it’s only 2 weeks until we unfurl Flag number 12 , pre season certainly goes quicker after a Premiership

There is just no challenger.

We missed arguably our 5 most important players. And Houli who is arguably in a our top 8-10 most important. No side wins games of AFL football (even practice matches) with that sort of talent missing.

At least you got the last bit right. We will be better in 2020 than we were in any of the preceeding 3 years. The amount of improvers exceed the decliners. Don't forget our poor run with injury in 2019. And we learnt a lot from 2018 about when to hit your peak.

Of our best 22 you could argue perhaps reiwoldt/cotchin/houli may suffer slight declines in form. Maybe Astbury? I'm sure they will manage their game time.

We are the 11th youngest list.

Guys like Soldo/Baker/Graham/Rioli/Castagna/Vlastuin/Lynch should all improve. Pickett is a bonus. The rest should at least maintain their form.

I just want Wet toast and the pies to have a good run with injuries so there are no excuses.

Get aboard and smile leon.
