St Kilda are a mismanaged rabble of a footy club, it is no wonder that Lyon wanted out. They have ridden a handful of good players but that does not disguise that they couldn't organise getting wet in a shower.

Freo have slowly rebuilt from the ground up hiring development coaches, assistants, starting academies, hiring scouts, building fascilites. The only change they hadn't made was the top job.

Lyon would have compared the job at the Saints to the job at Freo and thought it was like being offered the chance to manage Woolworths after having run a stall at Vic Market. But thankfully Lyon alienates everyone he works with, so could hurt Freo long term.

Good news for us is that the Saints could easily implode and the Melbourne gig is no better. Guys are lining up to say no to Gary Lyon. The Melbourne search looks like Richmond when we appointed Frawley because he was the only bloke who came to the interview.

This is a good week for Richmond. Three teams right around where we expect to be next year running themselves a warm bath and reaching for the razor blades.

Loved the synopsis Annie :clap

The Freo gig does look a good gig - list wise. Only time will tell how long the courting game was played for but I'd say you might find a personal connection between Lyon and the Dockers, and a friendly chat grew into something more. The only thing that surprised was the adequacy of the blindsiding. Rare in footy today.

Do you have anything on whether the arrival of Pelchen was just too heavy a straw for Lyon's back?

This time last year there were 6 teams left in the finals race and at the end of 2011 their coaches will all be gone.

Coll - coach about to finish
Geel - coach already signed with Ess
StK - coach has now quit
Bull - coach sacked
Syd - coach in his last year
Freo - coach just sacked.

WTF is going on? Don't these clubs realise that a coach who can get them into the finals is worth keeping?
The behaviour of these clubs make Richmond look stable and loyal - and that's saying something!

And we've had what - four coaches in 15 years (97 to current)? AND once in the finals - perhaps that is the ideal success tactic Poppa, and Richmond were just ahead of its time with 10 coaches and four finals appearances in 20 years (76 to 96) Were we better when we were ruthless? :hihi

What used to amuse me most about Ross Lyon was watching him in the coaches box when something went wrong on the field. In past years he used to look back over his left shoulder to berate SOS, this year with SOS gone he was like a touerettes sufferer, looking around for someone to blame.

Lyon is a smart cookie. He knows Saints are gone. Oldest playing list and on the down-slide. Just look at Fremantle's list. They are primed for success now, it was just unfortunate for them this year that theyhad many injuries.

And what's this querying coach loyalty? How many times has a coach been thrown out on their ear before their contract is up compared to coach's leaving before their contract is up. If Saints wanted to keep Lyon they should have acted much earlier, instead they're making last minute offers. And Lyon had an out clause in his contract so where's the issue?

Seeya Saints, the era is over. And no premierships to show.

Well said Goody. :clap

You can use the Old "this is business"

but there still ethics and a right and wrong way to do things.

Yeah Freo may have done the best thing for their club (yet to be seen or proven- i have doubts)

Yeah - Lyon may have done the best thing for himself and family.

But for a coach to do this behind another contracted coaches back, who was managed by the same group of people is just morally and ethically wrong. Lyon has just shown the type of person he is.

To believe he did all this the way he did, to stop all talk and media that would have caused havoc on his former club while he was in finals is just a cop out to me.

As of next season: Crowley 28
Johnson 28
Mcphee 30
Sandilands 30
Mcpharlin 31
Pavlich 31
Grover 32

Premiership window open or nearly closed?

Welcome to the real world of new football. Make no mistake with player free agency coming in this type of situation will just be like sneezing. Coaches coming and going in a instant along with players, it will be quite a new state of affairs in the AFL.

Boring is not making the finals ever. Lyon has taken his team within a kick of winning the flag and made 3 GFs.

Yes not making the finals ever is boring but so is the brand "Rossy" (how old is he; 8?) put on the park at St.Kilda. You would forgive it if the won a flag but the fact is they didn't. Another fact is that he took over a very good list lead by some star players ready to hit it's prime. Another fact is he wasted spots on his list with duds from other clubs like Pattison, Polo, Peake, Dempster, Gamble and others. He also neglected development of youngsters instead relying on perennial hacks like Clarke, Jones, Blake, Dawson, Kosi etc.

Oh, and he let Luke Ball go to Collingwood for nothing and he was a key player in them winning the flag against Rossy's team.

This is plainly nonsense what ethics did he breach? He allowed Stkilda to make him a new offer which he rejected and accepted a better offer from Freo. I dont see any breach of Ethics here - StKilda made a poor offer and I think they would now realize this. The way Harvey was treated was not unethical either just very very poor taste.

Good list management from previous coaches? Have we forgotten how little Grant Thomas rated ruckmen and in turn probably cost him a shot at a premiership due to this?

How could he had taken the Melbourne job when it wasnt even offered to him? - refer to Gary Lyon on the footy show
The core of the St.Kilda side as it stands today, was the work under taken by previous coaches. Who has Lyon developed? I can tell you this year, 8 players made their debut for the Saints, they comprise Will Johnson (1 game), Daniel Archer (1), Tom Simpkin (2), Tom Ledger(2), Nicholas Winmar (2), Alistair Smith (3), Jamie Cripps (4), Arryn Siposs (5). That's a grand total of 20 games experience into their youth. The year before they had only 3 debutantes. He is hardly developing for the long term. Instead, he and the recruiting staff have topped up with Peake, Lovett (didn't play a single game), Polo, Pattison, Gamble, Ray, Dawson. And don't forget, he let Ball go for nothing, when he was offered Wellingham and Goldsack.

It was well documented that Melbourne was chasing Lyon, whether or not an official offer had been made is another thing but the rumours were all over the joint.

A cop out? What a crock. He did exactly the right thing. Lyon has done nothing ethically wrong. Why would he come out with all this before the Saints final campaign is finished ? Harvey was contracted and he is being paid out. Lyon had an out clause in his contract. Lyon excluded his management group from discussions because of the conflict of interest. It happens all the time in business, why should footy be any different? I am sure the majority of people, if presented with a significantly better opportunity in life, would take it. Why should coaches, players etc be any different?

Have to agree GO. Lyon made the comment that April he wanted a 4 year contract, it took till Wednesday this week for the Saints to put anything together and on the flip side it took Freo, who first contacted him on or around August 4th and then made him a offer this week no time to give him what he'd been wanting all along for. It was a interesting and very professional interview by the Dockers although Lyon dodged questions about loyalty ver well. That is a thing of the past in the AFL.

Lyon stipulated that he is walking away from the Saints with his head held high.

I have to take a laugh at the Melbourne Football club though. They are a laughing stock. AFL is a ruthless organisation and they still think that the nice guy always finishes first. Their stance on not going after Lyon and the fact that another league team went in full on at who they thought would best suit their organisation speaks volumes for the MFC and their professionalism.
