Sydney got smart and poached a guy who I regard as one of the best recruiters in the business in Kinnear Beatson.

Not a household name, but he knows his stuff.

I think now St.Kilda need to rebuild. I do agree, if I was in charge, I would be ruthless and trade some of their big names for early draft picks and good younger players.

I would also hire Scott Waters. I think he is the best of the guys left. Coached his own team in his own right to Premierships, now regarded as a great developer of talent at Collingwood, so much so that a few clubs are after him in regards to a Development coach position.

Hire Scott Waters, trade some of the ageing A graders, delist heavily and recruit some kids. In this case now it is needed, as two of the big drivers of the culture down there in Lyon and Mission have departed.

Including the Tigers.

It’s the only way forward for St Kilda. Tip over start again. Maybe Goddard gets them Jager O’Meara. Maybe Nicky Dal Santo gets them pick 4 from the Gold Coast. Maybe those two get them picks 1,2 and 5 in the 17 year old pool. The Saints need to build around Ben Mcevoy, Jack Steven, Jamie Cripps, Arryn Siposs & Rhys Stanley. It’s not a great list but it’s all they have for now.

At the very least St Kilda need to set themselves up to have a hard run at free agency and have no massive contracts holding them back.

And what about Ross Lyon launching a "I am not a bad guy, I did nothing wrong" article in the local Perth rag. Some great PR work. Cleary the Freo board are trying to soften the backlash from the Mark Harvey sacking by painting Lyon in a favourable light. This is some of the best media spin work done by someone who doesn't call Canberra home.

Kinnear Beatson was sacked by the Lions, hardly poached.

Development coach is a lower rung than assistant, doubt he would be looking for a demomotion.

A question to those who follow list development . How does the freo list compare to the list that Lyon inheireted at the Saints in 2007 ...given that the saints made the the 8 in 2006 yet missed out in in Lyon's first year. The talking heads over here in the west are locking the dockers in for a top 6 maybe top 4 finish under Lyon

How do you know Hardwick doesn't have an out clause?

Would be very unusual for a first time coach if he does. Regardless the point was what does Hardwick have to do with the Lyon situation?

Fact is Lyon asked when he didn't deserve it then when he did he had called off discussions and when able St. Kilda made an offer.
With his club struggling after playing in a GF do you honestly think in April that Lyon deserved an uncoditional extension to his contract?

I accept they may have been hesitant to accept the deal in April. Fact is they only put an offer on the table 1 week before and it was too late, Lyon had already made up his mind due to inaction. Saints could have put an offer anytime before that and if they really wanted to keep him they should have. Inept is what the Saints management is. And it's falling apart. Saints are finished. Rebuild time. Starting from way behind though as they've neglected kids exclusively for a shot at a premiership.

No chance at top 4. They would need to actually win at the MCG and consistently. Pies, Cats, Eagles, Hawks, Blues all better than Freo.

Easy to just agree that Lyon is a top bloke and St. Kilda were the only ones at fault.

Perhaps Freo's only chance of the 8 next year is to replace St Kilda.

If Goodes form drops of next year then I reckon Sydney is also vulnerable

Never said that. But the end result is Saints wanted to keep Lyon but he moved on, so they failed. First step to redemption is to admit your failures.

Just to clarify, Ross Lyon had got his side into two Grand Finals and almost won both of them. He has the greatest winning percentage of any current coach in the land.

Inherited a list that most commentators thought could win a flag at some stage over the last few years. Not as though he had to build a list. I would be in the camp arguing Grant Thomas would have delivered that flag. Jury still out imo.

Also forgot to add, mark the moment when Fremantle landed Ross Lyon as coach as the moment Fremantle grew up and became an AFL club, not a Franchise learning to compete. Gutsy, ballsy, tough, hard and ruthless decision, but in the end, the right decision and shows that Fremantle mean business to be a top AFL side, not simply make up the numbers. Massive respect.

Lets wait and see. Being ruthless has done us more harm than good over the last 40 years.

I meant brought over. Andrew Ireland was at the Swans who worked Kinnear during the Lions era of dominance.

What or how he got their is insignificant, he is there and the Swans are better for it, whilst the Lions are worse off.

Development is moving into a new sphere. It is becoming a vital area. The growth of it over the past five years is amazing.

If Scott misses out on a Senior gig, to make him more rounded, a Development coach position may entice.

Goose Lyon's already placed himself as the guinea pig for the AFL media.
