Thanks to the recruiting and list management of previous coaches. Lyon has failed to improve that list. In fact, his list management can only be described as diabolical. IMO Lyon is an overated coach. Has taken a job with a decent list built by Harvey. He could have taken the Melbourne job for just as much money and time, doesn't take it because a premiership is too far away and there is too many holes in the list. Lyon is a downhill skier, looking for an easy premiership cup.

Good post. Totally agree. Lyon is overrated; inherited a very good list but couldn't achieve the ultimate. Has left the list is disarray by failing to regenerate, recruiting hacks like Polo, Pattison, Dempster and Peake, keeping faith in duds like Kosi, Jones, Blake, Dawson and Clarke and neglecting devlopment of young players.

Gee it's a bit of a shock to read this. I wonder if Lyon's decision was influenced by the Saintless players off-field indiscretions. Feel sorry for Mark and have lost a lot of respect for the Shockers after reading how they handled the situation. No matter what the decision loyal employees deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

Rodney eade has signed a 3 year deal at saints

And the Dee's will be scraping the bottom of the barrel...lets just hope they don't get Malthouse of course.

Apparently the Shockers football dept were at loggerheads with Harvey over a few little things. One being the targetting of Mitch Clark.Harvey wanted him while others in the football dept[Chris Bond amongst others] were against it.
Interesting times ahead for Freo and one Mitch Clark.

Grant Thomas article this morning states that Lyon has financial problems.

Well he won't any more if the rumours are true...a lazy $50,000 or so hitting the bank account every month will help.

St. Kilda won't be an attractive coaching proposition IMO. They are set to record a big financial loss of close to $2 million for the year, they have a list with too many players on the wrong side of 28, too many retreads who have too many limitations, and a scarcity of kids who have been able to develop in the seniors.

I would say out of all of the coaching jobs still up for grabs, the Saints one could be the least attractive.

I look forward to hearing Mark Harvey's take on all of this...he is the one I feel sorry for. Not only does he get a tap on the shoulder and is asked to clean out his desk, but learns that the club has been plotting to replace him behind his back for weeks or perhaps even months. I hope he lets his feelings be known...

FWIW Greg Denham is of the opinion that Paul Roos will almost certainly be coaching a team next year...but he doesn't know which team.

Good list management from previous coaches? Have we forgotten how little Grant Thomas rated ruckmen and in turn probably cost him a shot at a premiership due to this?

How could he had taken the Melbourne job when it wasnt even offered to him? - refer to Gary Lyon on the footy show

That wasn't Denham, it was a caller.

Its not that simple, there's the matter that he essentially got Harvey sacked. A lot of coaches refuse to deal with clubs until they make arrangements with the incumbent because its the right thing to do, its a matter of integrity.

Then there's the deceitful aspect of it just like with Bomber Thompson.
Do you honestly think Lyon rang up the CEO at Freo and said I want to coach your football club?

Lyon didnt get Harvey sacked. The Freo hierachy did. They obviously saw some major flaws in Harvey and decided to got after what they believed to be the best and most realistic option. Word is slowly filtering out that not all was well between Harvey and other people at Freo.

Even if thats the case, once he started negotiating with Freo while Harvey was still coach he and Freo still essentially screwing Harvey over and being deceptive.

So sack him and then speak to Lyon. They could have actually done it this year if they had problem with Harvey.

I can live with most of what Lyon has done. He is well within his rights to seek out a better job than the one he has, maybe the St Kilda culture finally got to him, maybe he thinks he can’t take them any further, a change is as good as a holiday etc etc.

He has down two things that are not kosher, in my opinion though. White-anting Harvey and taking his job behind his back is poor form. The notion of a footy coach finding out that he might have been sacked when he sees someone else sitting at his desk belongs to a bygone era.

Also, what the hell was he doing on Saturday night announcing the retirements of half his team, without telling them first? Surely it no longer mattered to him whether they played at St Kilda or not?

Poor form.

BTW, I hope Harvey enjoyed his head job.

St Kilda are a mismanaged rabble of a footy club, it is no wonder that Lyon wanted out. They have ridden a handful of good players but that does not disguise that they couldn't organise getting wet in a shower.

Freo have slowly rebuilt from the ground up hiring development coaches, assistants, starting academies, hiring scouts, building fascilites. The only change they hadn't made was the top job.

Lyon would have compared the job at the Saints to the job at Freo and thought it was like being offered the chance to manage Woolworths after having run a stall at Vic Market. But thankfully Lyon alienates everyone he works with, so could hurt Freo long term.

Good news for us is that the Saints could easily implode and the Melbourne gig is no better. Guys are lining up to say no to Gary Lyon. The Melbourne search looks like Richmond when we appointed Frawley because he was the only bloke who came to the interview.

This is a good week for Richmond. Three teams right around where we expect to be next year running themselves a warm bath and reaching for the razor blades.
