Luke McGuane

Geez if Muscles is on of our best in the air we may as well give up. Yes he was 2nd at the Tigers for contested marks in 2012. But he was basically our 2nd key forward in 2012 so you'd expect his contested marks to be up there on the Tiger list. Yet in the competition he was only 36th. That means every other team had on average 2 players who took more contested marks than Luke per game. In 2011 He was 13th for average contested marks on the Tiger list and in 2010 he was 20th. Luke is a tryer, he gives his all, but let's be honest, he is not one of our best at anything, he's a fringe player who can thank his lukcy stars he was recruited by the Tigers because there is no way he'd have lasted 8 seasons anywhere else except maybe Melbourne.

mcguane is good in the air.

he reads incoming ball pretty well, knows how to position his body to advantage, and relishes physical contact.

if any of post, putt, hughes, astbury or griffiths had demanded his spot sooner then we wouldn't be seeing him.

He's tremendous in the air, I can't see how that is even up for debate. He's strong as an ox, fearless, and also agile. He's not a good decision maker, and his kicking is too unreliable. All up, a good depth player. Someone compared him to Kepler Bradley, has a RHG, big and tough, but does bumbling and exasperating things.

As a number 1 backman, he's a real worry, as a depth/ fringe KPP, happy to have him. You want your fringe players to be able to do damage, not run around playing kick to kick like Cam Howat.

Grundy isnt quite the player the McGuane is, but i wouldnt say he is "Miiilllleeeesssss behind"

Leysy loves middling players from other sides, doesn't like our middling players though.

one of my best mates is a mad swan and i watch alot of swans with him over the past decade and have watched grundy closely because after his first season, my mate used his name as a euphemism for hopeless bumbling buffoon. However, it has become a running joke, because after his first season, he has provided fairly consistent, no nonsense, useful service, a bit like say emmett dunne did. My mate, who is stubborn as hell, refuses to recant, but him and I both know he is wrong.

This point highlights to me the key to premierships .... the team with the least crap worst players

if Luke was 36th for contested marks last year he was fairly high up the order for a player who only played 9 games for the year

36 for average contested marks per game, not total.

Possibly because middling players from most clubs have been a lot better than ours Snake.

You think Muscles ranks alongside Grundy?

I'd take Reg. Just not miles diff, IMO. If Luke could improve his kicking by 20% (which is no small ask I know) it'd be close.

could be a deceptive stat. I'd like to see where he stands for KPPs. A lot of those players would be mids and smalls 1 on 1. There are contested marks and contested marks.

yep. its the monster pack crashing ones that bring 30,000 people to their feet with their arms aloft, spraying a beer-pie jus all over the bloke in front of thems' head, like roachy, richo, clokey, JR took/take that are football platinum.

The kind where McGuane is one out, holding out Alwyn Davey and takes the grab and then plays on from 20 and kicks it into the side of the umpires head doesnt really count.

Reg has finished 5 & 7th in the B & F past two years in an excellent side. Very good footballer.

If Muscles could improve his kicking, composure & discipline, he'd be a very good footballer as well.

Alas, as we know, he wont.

Reg by a long way. Underrated footballer.

OK I concede the point, 5th and 7th in the top side is big. I still reckon Luke is tremendous at the contest and good to have as a fringe player. I love when the ball is coming into a pack with him in it and he's swatting off opponents and taking grabs or bringing the ball to ground. I hate it when he does a looping handball backwards to contest, or hares off and kicks long to a 2 on 1 in the oppositions favour.

Lets let the stats speak for themselves in 2012 Vickery v McGuane

Vickery 9 games 41 kicks 21 marks 21 tackles 7 goals 5 behinds
McGuane 9 games 53 kick 31 marks 31 tackles 15 goals 10 behinds

McGuane had more kicks, marks, tackles, goals and even more behinds than Vickery

Even in the NAB cup game against the Bummers McGuane kicked 2 goals to Vickery 0
Clearly :star McGuane :star will be there round 1 v Carlscum

No actually, almost all are KPPs, see for yourself:

Fair enough, not much in the top 50 though really, ahead of some big names to put it in perspective, Roughhead, Hurley, McPharlin, Reid, Tarrant, Glass. I still say he's a top mark.

He has turned into a very good, very reliable player. Was discussed a bit as a potential AA last year IIRC. Not sure muscles will ever be talked about as a potential AA. Some of his highlights could make the AA blooper reel though.

I agree with many though that despite muscles shortcomings I'd rather him than A Edwards at this point for Rd 1.
