Luke McGuane

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

It makes me laugh that people write off Thursty as merely a negator. It is impicit in that claim that Mcguane, by compare, is creative. ;D

I've never seen Thursty bursting out of the backline. I've not seen too much run and carry from Thursty. He has averaged 3.6K & 5.2HB per game in his career, are you suggesting they are pretty damaging disposals? Why is it implicit McGuane is creative?

IMO we have the worst back 6, have had for ages and we need to upgrade at least 4 of the positions. Maybe Newman & Moore can survive, (maybe Thursty too if we can get some bigger bodies and some creativity around him) but McGuane, King, Farmer, Polo have no place.

I'd be playing Tambling in a BP, leave Thursty in the other BP, Moore & Newman on the flanks and hopefully we find a CHB (Post/Astbury/Grimes) and hopefully the Goo can take FB. Deledio is doing well at HB but in time we need him back rotating through the midfield.

Geelong is the backline model I would like us to be replicating. They have it all - negating, run, flexibility and aggression.

.. and again, you missed the point that ToO was making.

I'm sure he can express this himself, but as ToO has said, this is NOT a thread about Luke's ability. I understand that others have established threads to tackle that issue with some vigour.

No, I've clearly aknowledged ToO's point but chose to elaborate my own views.

Certainly not ToO, I dont think anyone can critisize him giving his utmost to the y&b. Just like no-one can critisize Tucky, or Lids or Dusty or Nason etc for giving their utmost either.
But it's more than just giving your utmost.

It's also more than just having the skills but take your point. Otherwise Meyer, Casserly and Schulz would have made it.
Ideally we need players with both qualities and then we'll be a good side.

Whilst his disposal skills aren't as clean McGuane carries the football better than Thursfield without doubt.
He's also faster and his recovery/2nd efforts are better than Wil's.

Whoever is preferred I don't think we can afford to carry both and I think Dimma's come to that realisation.
Seems Thursty has been the one to make way for now.
We won last weekend and so far there seems some justification in that decision.

Thursty is older albeit not by much.
I would certainly have Luke in the key defender role ahead of most others on the list right now, younger or not.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

It seems the bashers on this thread assume that people supporting Luke are blind to his deficiencies. That's not correct. I haven't seen anyone here claim Luke is an effective disposal king.

Luke is probably our best KPD at the moment. He's a great negator, is prepared to run it out when he has the chance and never has anything left to give at the end of the match. He's obviously playing according to the instructions being given to him by the coaching staff and is being rewarded by playing all the matches.

Until we find someone who can match his stopping performances and bring better run out of defence, he's the best we've got.

For people here to constantly have pot shots at him is ridiculous and shows an obvious agenda. Or more likely they view themselves as astute football watchers, wrote him off 2 years ago and now struggle to change their views. These same people seem to think Willy T is a better negator, but I just can't see it.

Luke's name is probably one of the first on the team sheet and that's a testament to his importance to our developing team.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

Just off topic a bit ...

I have this hot water service. Pilot light always goes out, gives tepid water, works for about 5 minutes before conking out .....

....but I use it every day and it'll do until i get a better one.

Wasnt Luke dropped for the dropped the Adelaide game but only to get a late call up?

I'm refering to McGuanes potential replacements, Post et al. Thursty is already in our side most of the time.

Would you? Wouldn't try to fix it then? After all, they cost a lot of money brand new, and you don't know whether a new one would be any more reliable. Especially, if it's from a second tier factory as all the first tier hot water services are being shipped to houses up north?

Yes, he played half a game with Coburg the same weekend.

FWIW I think McGuane has been very solid since that re-call up.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

I get the impression that this thread has turned into a 'glass half empty' vs 'glass half full' debate. That is, that both sides aren't very far apart.

The 'glass half full' crew are arguing that McGuane gives his all, is good defensively, provides run, but can be a liability with his disposal. They argue that he deserves his spot in the side as there aren't any better alternatives and thus he should be backed to the hilt.

The 'glass half empty' crew are essentially saying the same thing. That is, that Luke has deficiencies but there are no alternatives ATM, but to improve we need to replace him going forward ( ;)).

Played at Coburg less than a month ago.

Reckon there's a bit more to it...

Some here want to cut hard and cut early, but have misgivings when the likes of Carl, DRod and Otto succeed elsewhere.

What would they make of Zac Dawson?

For some that would depend solely on how tall he is.

Probably as much as the St Kilda supporters.
Don't forget the Aints haven't won anything yet. Their side isn't as good as it could be either.
The benchmark is the Cats side. Not too many weak links there.

I know history agrees with you. But at the 15min mark of the last quarter of the GF...

I accept the Cats are the benchmark - as were the Lions 7 years ago; however, its not fair for us to use them as the starting point (eg McGuane is no Harry Taylor --> Upgrade; Moore is no Scarlett --> move on). There are intermediate steps between the Cats (ie one of the best two in the last 25 years) and us (one of the worst two in the last 25 years).

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

There's no doubt great midfields can make defenders look better than they are, but saying most teams can get by with a Zac Dawson is a poor comparison ILO.

Wow. I see what you've done there. Very clever.

Ridiculous is stating I have hung it on one or two players. And I'm not just talking about this years results. If you hadn't noticed we were poor last year. And a few before that. I named 8 regular senior players who I think will not help us have sustained success now or in the next 5 years.

Well you didn't clarify any of that in your post which was a reply to this specific comment which you quoted - "sorry if i misunderstand, but im sure you are saying McGuane and Jackson lead to us being on the bottom of the ladder." You didn't mention which season or over the last 5 years or different levels of support, different coaching staff, better financial situation etc. I'm sure our mediocrity has been due to more than just a handfull of players, especially if they are Luke and Dan.

Big Cat Lover said:
Finally, are you seriously comparing Jackson to Foley? When fit, Foley is an A grade midfielder. Jackson is not, not now not ever. But he tries hard and speaks well so we better keep him hey?

I wasn't comparing them as players at all other than as a direct response to your comments about the reason our results are so bad . Dan has certainly been far more benefit to the team than Nathan so far this season, and last season too. No criticism of him, I love him, but fact is Nathan has struggled with fitness unfortunately. If we're talking last season Dan was our most improved player and runner up in our best and fairest. It would be easy to argue we'd be worse off if it hadn't been for his efforts.
