Luke McGuane

Classic McGuane. Hospital handballs, poor skills, no composure.

Yep let's keep him another year.

He's not in our best 22. If McGuane is to force his way into the team, it has to be on exceptional performance at Coburg. To keep his spot, he'd need to average 2 goals a game and fully play the lead up CHF role that we badly need.

While he was ok in the later half of the year, he still made too many bad errors (e.g. Freo game); didn't take enough marks as the lead up option and was inclined to get too close to and compete with Jack. This contributed to the bomb it long tactic that we went back to too often in bringing the ball into the forward line.

Our CHF needs to have footy smarts and be a great ball user when he wins it. Not sure that McGuane could consistently reach that level - hasn't so far in a reasonably lengthy career. Having said that, if LRT can do it for Sydney (who I've only ever thought of as a battler like McGuane), maybe he could surprise. Have my doubts though.
Why would anyone expect Laceout to be our CHF?
Vickery would be our first option for CHF. If we land Chaplin then there's a strong likelihood we could groom Griff to cover CHF in the event of Vickery taking on more ruck duties.
Would expect that Luke could be utilised as our third tall option, either flank or pocket, he's got enough pace, mobility and aggression to create some bother for defenders without being required to attempt a key position.
Young Elton is still a couple of seasons away from stepping up to a permanent senior berth.

I didn't realize McGun had that much influence on the team to single handedly determine whether we play finals or not.

If we can't upgrade on the proven failures (like McGuane, Moore, etc, etc.) then we can't realistically expect sufficient overall improvement to leap into the finals. Fortunately, I think we are and have been, and I would be amazed if McGuane is in our best 22 (or 28 for that matter!). I understand the reasoning behind his recall given the long term injuries to our young KPPs; but further upgrade is required so it's not the McGuane's that we need to call on as a replacement if required. Make him captain of our VFL team and leave him there.

Rather McGuane over Post anyday.

No way. We know what McGuane is he isn't changing. Post is still young enough to become a player.

I got amusement value out of Luke this year, and he played a couple of ok-ish games. But I could see the joke getting old very quickly next year.

Many are carrying on like LMcG was a no 1 draft pick who has delivered nothing. His role from here on will be third forward or pure backup and for me he is welcome and deserved of another contract.

The situations with Grimes, Griffiths, Astbury, Post, Vickery and maybe Elton led to Muscles being required.
The 6 above come on and the McGuane debate goes away.

We have basically traded Miller for McGuane. If McGuane didn't play this year it's pretty likely Miller would have been kept.

If you HAD to choose one to keep as insurance who would it be?

No brainer for me - ABM - anyone but Miller.
And the description of Mcguane as "insurance" is a good one. I've always used the term "depth player" - but when it all boils down - insurance is what he offers.

Correct. Not sure if the young guys need this kind of onfield leadership.

You could almost get the same sort of panicked vision from most games he played in defence. Thankfully when he does his Benny Hill stuff now it's in our forward line.

What else can you do but give a sardonic chuckle. Not only is he a dud, he is a clown as well.
