Yes he is pretty dumb. Never said he wasn't valuable, and I have stuck up for McGuane a lot, but the simple fact he is a dumb footballer. How you can deny that is laughable.

I was happy with his effort and performance on Riewoldt, but take a close look and see that McGuane lacks the fundamental footy smarts. He is still our best tall defender but boy, does he do some really stupid things.

Also there was no need for that hit on Ray, cost himself and us a few weeks and a goal in a game where we drew. Buddy and Roughy and Hale next week, no surprise our two tall defenders are going to be missing for reasons they could of prevented. No surprise both have a negative trait of not being the smartest footballers.

I knwo you have a deep love for him mate, but if you do not think he is a dumb footballer than you quite simply are not paying attention.
Yes i,m a fan of Mcguane,Not because i believe he,s been sold short with his skills but the fact that he actually has the balls to throw his weight around.Something we havn,t had in a player for 30yrs.Yes it was stupid what he did last night however to say he,s Dumb is way over the top.Now to say he cost us the game.Your a joke. What qtr did it happen,The 2nd?Hmmmmmmmmmmm the Chimp missed one 25 mtrs out in the 3rd.Grigg missed 40 out.But oh no it was Mcguane who cost us the game in the 2nd.As for next week,No faith in Thirsty or Grimes Bob? ::)

So will they let him off the report to compensate? :p

Can you give me some actual examples of what he did that was dumb, or do you just think he is dumb in general ??? (besides being reported)

Love the way the term "dumb footballer" is trotted out by the so called experts.

Surely "dumb footballer" is a codition that can't be fixed because it implies some inherent mental deficiency.

Other players who have been labelled "dumb":

Jackson, White and King - to date, our best players this year.

Makes me womder if this dumb labelling is a case of Dumb and Dumber
Yep, agree 100%.
Was all over St Nick like a rash and his poise under pressure was fantastic.

Couldn't of said it better myself!!

The sooner we can replace Luke with a smarter defender the better imo.

No Rance, now no Mcguane V Buddy/Roughead next week! ::)

good post :thumbsup

It's a shame Astbury has also been left wanting the last few weeks. Cofident he'll come good though.

Anyway looks *smile* is going to be out for the next few weeks. Hopefully Grimey gets a gig. :)

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

With McGuane, Moore and Rance out, it's time for Dirty Hands to come in.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

Maybe dumb footballer is a bit condescending. How about lack of footy smarts and composure? McGuane definitely lacks both of those. Did his job last night on Reiwoldt, however, to be a truly competitive side and really threaten for the premiership, in today's game all your backmen have to be able to offer more than McGuane can. The skill level required woth the ball is much greater today than it was even 10 years ago.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

Not sure about that. A good stopper is still important even if you're not a playmaker.

Presti last year was a good example of that.

Presti? Was struggling to get games last year. 13 games, no finals. Wasn't selected for the grand final replay. He's a perfect example of a dying breed. Retired at 33 years old. At 23, 10 years ago, he was perfect for the game. The game has moved on. Today, yes you need stoppers but those stoppers also need to be able to run off as much as possible when appropriate.

Be honest now, how many Presti' type key backmen are running out there these days?

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

4 quarters reaching contests and McGuane still smashed the best in the league last night.

Tigerdog,
I think your last comment was very average, and downright wrong.
I thought McGaune played really well on Reiwoldt tonight.
Unlike many players from both teams, McGuane puts in 100%.
I('m happy to take this up at the next Club80.
Shers.

What did I say??

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

I know most won't agree, but I just watched a replay of the McGuane hit and can't work out why he should be reported. He connected with Rays chest not head. If he did connect with the head, I have no doubt Ray would have been out cold!

If that's the case then great....but my first thoughts was Muscles jumped off the ground and made contact to his head.

Looked like a shoulder to the head to me. Not sure how you can jump up as high as he did and shoulder someone in the chest. He's gone for sure.

You may well be right that Presti type backmen are a dying breed, but the only reason Presti didn`t play all 22 games plus all the finals was due to injury.

Only playing 13 games had nothing to do with his form,he hadn`t played for a month due to injury yet Collingwood still selected him for the Grand Final, the only reason he didn`t play was because he withdrew himself due to not feeling right.

That`s how I saw it too.

Smashed? Didn't Reiwoldt get 3 and miss 2 straight-forward shots? Didn't McGuane concede 5 free kicks?

McGuane applied himslef 100% as usual. The Saints gameplan was as usual, completely unsuitable for a key forward. Reiwoldt was the only tall target and most times was double or triple teamed.

McGuane was appallingly free-kicked in the last but kept going. He played as well as he can. Hope he gets off but if he doesn't Gourdis or Grimes will hopefully get the nod.

Pretty much cost us the Hawthorn game last year through bad decisions in the last quarter. He's just not decisive, which means he'll often come unstuck. Case in point: the rushed behind incident. That it was wrong is immaterial. Superb pickup off the ground but he had no idea what he was going to do with it once he had it. Saints player closed the gap and the rest is history. I'll never question his effort or desire though. Good fightback after Riewoldt was dominant for the first ~45 minutes.

We should expect the MRP to cite the St.Kilda medical report in its finding, as they did with Waite.
