Luke McGuane

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

Agree Goody

We know all about Mcguane. Cant stop a good tall or even a big tall. Ill discip-lined and poor with the ball.

The question will need to be asked soon. What is the long term objective in playing him?

I think we need to bite the bullet and go Rance, Astbury and Grimes as the key backs. Wont be pretty at times and maybe Moore and Thursty will need to support during the year but Muscles is past his use by date.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

Funny I thought he was named as one of our best players.
Thought he well beat his opponent in Waite in the first half despite being under a mountain of ball.
To the point where Waite's frustrations boiled over to try and take out Muscles father/son options.
I must have watched a different game.

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

The problem having guys like McGuane is not what they do defensively.

Its what they give the other way that hurts.

How many of those inside 50's were because we couldn't rebound the ball properly & it came straight back in. He gave us nothing in that regard.

& Muscles goes into self preservation mode when he does have it. His attitude is not to use it contructively but to pass the "buck" to a teammate.

In another era that wouldnt be such a big deal but now more than ever it causes pressure to build back there.

You definitely weren't!!!! McGuane accounted himself well.

100%. Muscles belongs in a past era. Not devoid of some excellent qualities, its just that his lack of quality in other areas kills us in today's game.

That's somewhat true as he definitely has learned to work within his limitations. Thursfield is even more guilty of what you say IMO.
However Luke did his job last night and until Grimes is mature enough to replace him he's the best we have.

I'd say maybe you only watched a quarter and a half.

A bit more than you then. ;)

Not sure thats possible.

On the best we have back there, its one reason why this season is going to see us on the losing side more often than not.

Agree with ya ToOies thought he played well and it wasn't his job to run off but that was left to others to do like Rance and Lids

Does IMO but eventually we'll need to do better than both so it's a mute point.
Astbury on the other hand doesn't have the same problem with ball in hand. Far more fluid and makes good decisions.

Why Luke is clearly still getting a game is we have few genuine defensive talls who can negate a strong opposing forward.

Should have been his job to run off once Waite was off. You try and take advantage of changing situations. If he was told to remain as a lead weight in the backline then that reflects poorly on coaching decisions in my opinion.

Agree and thats why its so bloody important that Grimes comes along and replaces him. Has the smarts and speed to be a very good closing defender but is also good the other way.

Hardwick said that in his post match. The team ended up being to tall with Foley and Waite going off. They had the extra smalls and we didnt have the right match ups and like has been said several times the ball was trapped in the backline for much of the match so hard to run off when it keeps coming back so fast

Re: Luke McGuane = Guts

Amusing that people have a go at Mcguane for not Running off his man etc Yet the very same people don,t want him to have the ball.Besides all that.Pre Hardwick,Mcguane was infact one of a few who actually Ran fwd to make another option etc.Now Hardwick gets appointed and his first job as he said was to improve the defensive area of our game.Pretty sure thats still work in progress.

I don't find it amusing. McGuane is not really a key position player and he doesn't have the disposal skills to be a link player. Think that says it all, he's a stop-gap pseudo measure until we can get some experience into some real key position backmen. He's on the ground though so he needs to provide options, especially once Waite went off. No qualms him following Waite around all day but against the resting ruck he needed to provide something more.

Like i said.Amusing.You acknowledge that he doesn,t have the skills[Disposal] to be a link player yet you want him to provide an option. So which is it?

Skinny as he is he is a man. Top five or six for us tonight. Picked himself for next week. Unlike most of his mates who need excuses and allowances.
He gets in trouble because he gets there. To the contest. His friends could learn a lot from him.
He stood under 68 inside 50s. The defenders were not the root cause of that.
PS Just read your post, Barnzy. Some rational thought.

Agree Jack. I am no McGuane fan but he did not get beat in many contests and only gave away one silly free under a torrent of attacks. Wish he was an inch or two taller and 5-10kg heavier.
