Luke McGuane

To the people still not convinced McGuane is any good, how would you feel if we had plucked him from obscurity out of the VFL and this was his first year?

I'll reserve judgement, if he manages to kick some bags against quality opposition then there may be some redemption for Muscles.

How would we feel about Grigg if these were his first two games for the club?

I'm sure if he was plucked from obscurity by Collingwood they would be lamenting the fact we didn't pick him up ;D

Collingwood, along with the rest of the competition have had absolutely no interest in McGuane, even Crazy Vossy got cold feet at the height of his madness.

As a defender.

i believe he was wasnt traded because no team was willing to pay the 2nd round pick we wanted for him.

So glad we held our nerve.

When you look at what Melbourne paid for Dawes I reckon we were offering McGun our cheap if all we wanted was a 2nd rounder.

This is the McGuane thread. Good point by TT. He's like a new recruit, but also not like a new recruit because his years of middling to poor performances in the backline are what have put him in the position to perform like this in the forward line. It's not just the highlight reel moments from his frst Q last week either, did a lot of smart (yes, smart), tough fwd defensive work throughout the game as well. Thing is, people who are still saying they aren't convinced or its an abberration of whatever are missing the point. He is currently exceeding his brief, by a fair way. At the moment he is playing like a very good third tall, or a second tall. The clubs hope for him would have been to play as decent third tall and do a bit of crashing and bashing. Do an OK job while the young blokes develop, a tough fringe player. 1 more year to do that role, he would have been bagged each week on PRE, but as far as the club would have been concerned that would have been satisfactory. That would have been a win. He is clearly succeeding that expectation. The club would now be pondering his contract. His formline from last year and so far this year has been solid to good and on the up.

We,d be wrapped TT but the fact is he,s in his NINTH season and played possibly the 2 best games of his career. So before the pro MCguane crowd go "see, he is good" lets just give it more than 2 games.

The Fremantle game aside, McGuane had a pretty good go late last year in the same role he's now playing. He's improved over the summer which you would hope would be the case. I bet Melbourne is wishing they'd gone for him instead of Dawes.

I think the pro-McGun crowd are pleasantly surprised by his form. But we did know he was never as bad as the haters were making him out to be.

I've never been a 'hater' but to his detractors defence what was clear his time was up as a defender.
I like TS's point though that his time in defence (8 yr apprenticeship ;D) is what's making him effective in the forward 50m in what is obviously a different role.
Importantly the role he played all his junior career in. Until he's upgraded, the job is his.

He was, and is, as bad as anyone ever made him out to be. As a defender. He was horrible. He said so himself in an interview. Too scared to go up for a mark, and if he did he dropped it.

Right now, he's actually doing exactly what he did as a defender, forward, in that he's making a contest, but the balls falling in a dangerous position and goals are being scored. Which is as good in the forward line as it is bad in the backline.

His problem was never his intensity, it was losing his opponent (again, a good thing forward, bad back), spoiling toward the goalface (same), and the general chaos he created (same).

The bonus is now, he seems to be happier, more free and more confident to try things he never would have. I never knew he had a creative streak, but he has done a couple of very creative forward plays in each game. It's amazing what confidence and freedom can do. He said himself how frightened he was of making a mistake back, and it is showing now what confidence (both in himself, and in the fact that he's not the last man back) can do.

He was awful, awful, awful down back. Scared, messy, chaotic, second guessing each disposal, and (as he still is forward) a very average kick.
Fortunately, he's doing very well forward. Shows what happens when you play a player in the right position. Perhaps his apprenticeship down back has helped in his ability to contest forward... Perhaps he would have contested anyway + had nine years of experience as a forward. Who knows.

Disagree strongly on the marking part, I always thought it was a big strength. I always saw him as a big strengths and big weaknesses player. Top mark, fast, agile, strong, fearless >>>>> Poor kick, poor decision maker
