Luke McGuane

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, his direct opponents have been Bootsma & ?? The defences of Blues and Saints were pretty undermanned & ordinary. Bulldogs are not much better. The real test is yet to come.

when a forward can fly as high as McGuane does, it is irrelevant whose head he is standing on.

Will be picked up by ex pie - Tom YOUNG on Sunday!

They'll have to take him off in a bucket. Muscles will make soup of him.

Getting ahead of yourself would be saying he's a useless dud certain to be delisted yet here we are 8 seasons and almost 100 games later.

Pretty much.

I do recall some newspaper articles back in about 2008/2009 talking up our 3 future young gun tall defenders - Moore/Thursfield/McGuane. All 3 have failed, I'm not about to call eureka on McGuane's switch after 2 OK games against poor opposition.

Even if his form drops off a bit from current, the value of his pace (his closing speed was always tremendous) and strength at the contest is huge. St K defenders were really looking over their shoulders last Friday.

One criticism I do have though, he needs some stronger hold hair gell. If he hadn't been so preoccupied with keeping his pretend mohawk vertical last week he might have kicked a bit straighter

He needs to talk to Heppell then. That boy knows where you can get the good stuff.

McGuane might struggle if he had to play on the best defender each week, but he doesn't have to!
He gets the third best defender each week, this is what makes him a dangerous proposition.
The Eagles lost Lynch to the Pies and Nic Nac hasn't played due to a groin injury and Lecras broke his arm in round one, they are now struggling as a result.
Until one of our young talls form demands a game, McGuane is a critical player in our structure.

Disagree strongly on the marking part, I always thought it was a big strength. I always saw him as a big strengths and big weaknesses player. Top mark, fast, agile, strong, fearless >>>>> Poor kick, poor decision maker

He is at least tripling the contested marks in the last 2 years what he was getting previously. If his marking was a strength in the backline he wasn't using it much. Probably to do with judging whether to mark or punch in the backline. At least now he knows if the balls there go for the mark. Very little deicison has to be made. Also playing deep forward very little decision has to be made disposal wise as well. It is obvious now that he should have always played forward. But I do remember a game where during the match we moved him from the backline to the forward line and he was absolutely woeful. Give credit to Hardwick for making the move, and also give credit so far this year to McGuane for making the most of it. But 2 matches doesn't clear the slate of the previous 7 years so he still needs to get some credits happening before I'm convinced.

So we should ignore last years 9 matches for 16 goals then ?

Geez give me a break, I'm being mildly optimistic on a player I never thought I would and you're still having a go ;D I didn't think McGuane was great last year, no. Only played weak clubs and all his goals were against bottom 8 clubs. Mind you he only played North in the top 8, so didn't play any of the top 7 clubs (quite amazing really - was it luck or design). Have been much more impressed by his 2 performances so far this year. If he can keep up that sort of level he'll have well earnt his position.

Being a "gun" and being a "dud" are almost the opposite ends of the spectrum.
If a bloke doesn't achieve "gun" status it doesn't automatically mean he's a "dud".

Alrighty then, for the time being he shall be known as McGud.

I remember watching a game around 2007 and Walls talked up the future of the Richmond backline. "The Richmond backline is in good hands" he said. :rofl
