Luke McGuane

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

Did some great things again, and some underrated things as well. Throws himself at the ball and adds some defensive pressure up forward trying to lock the ball in. Not the most coordinated forward going around nor the quickest but gives all he can...whether people like him or not. He is obviously playing to what Dimma wants of him!

he did a great job last night and did all that would have been asked of him. Strong marks, terrific first, second, third and fourth efforts. Added real defensive pressure in the forward line chasing down the ball and throwing himself around like he wanted to play there. He performs much better than that other bloke we had last year...the one with the attractive wife.....We were all crying out for a forward who can kick 40 goals a year and Luke may well be one of those who can.....but if he keeps that going then he will drag a stronger defender onto himself.

but if he drags a better defender it's one less defender to double/triple team Jack or TV. Not a bad problem to have

For the first time ever the word sublime came into my mind when McGuane was involved in the play - the little give to Reiwoldt in the 2nd quarter that resulted in a goal was just that. McGun spent the next 10 minutes wondering what had just happened.

Was interested to hear Hardwick say that Reiwoldt sacrificed his game to an extent to get Mcguane & Vickery into the action.

McGuane not only did the job he was there for, he played smart, not a word I've ever actually associated with him before. That tackle on Bootsma was the sort of thing that normally happens to Luke, not the other way around. Would have been nice if he'd kicked the goal, but the point was all we needed and most importantly it used up valuable time. Luke kicked 2 goals last night, and the Fremantle game aside, I think that was about his average in the latter part of last year. I'd take that any day. A 3rd string forward snagging a couple a week.

Good to see so many people climbing onboard the McGun Bullet Train. Some of us have been telling you for years McGun is a deadest gun.

Bloody oath, he's mobile and tough. 40 would be massive, I'd be rapt with 30.

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

The main thing I like about Luke's game in the forward line atm is that he sets a benchmark of workrate that the Elton's and Astbury's of the side need to exceed if they want to get a game. If they do that and with their extra dollop of talent thrown in they will be effective players for the club.

For the moment McGuane is performing his role in the side and should be respected for that.

Beautiful picture in todays Hun clearly shows Bootsma should have received a free for an over the shoulder tackle. Luckily those maggots turned an OPSM blind eye at exactly the right moment.

Yes and no. If it was us I'd be screaming for it but photos like that can be a bit misleading. That might sound ridiculous but there are photos of Leo Barry's mark in the 05 grand final where if you look closely you can see Tadgh Kennelly tugging Ashley Sampi's jumper (I said jumper) ever so slightly at the front of the pack. Yet if you watch the footage in real time you couldn't possibly pay it...you can't even see it if you're looking for it. I've watched McGuane's tackle countless times and I don't think you could possibly pay it high. Although I would almost prefer it if Carlton were robbed. ;D

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

Until someone else puts their hand up for a forward line spot I'm more than happy for Lukey to keep his spot.

Yes he plays ugly and can't hit the side of a barn, but what he gives is a contest and he competes as hard as anyone out on the ground week in, week out.

Guys like Aaron Edwards need to take note that that's what we expect from our forwards.

Seventeen goals in 10 games since somebody had a "Road to Damascus" moment and moved him forward.

I thought Dimma lived in Ormond?

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

I don't like him as a footballer, however I noticed last night that he was prepared to take front position and make a contest. If he can improve his marking and goal kicking, he will be more than handy.

He's one of the best contested marks in the club. He's also one of te best pack crashes so what people see as a dropped mark is actually a successful crashed pack which brings the ball to ground.

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

Thanks Luke for the great tackle to help win it for us last night. :)

I couldn't stand him as a defender because he was not composed under pressure but as a forward I am liking what I'm seeing.

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

He busted about 5 packs and his pressure was fantastic

Agree Zip, performed a good role and helped bust a few packs to give the crumbers a chance with a couple of defenders on the ground. Also, did some great blocking and bustling to give TV a better run at the ball a few times as well.

Keep up the good work McGoo

All aboard the McGun line, we are stopping every station to Grand Final.

Disagree on the first bit, a lot of confusion I reckon. people will often start their post with something like 'I know he's only a fringe player but....' then proceed to bag him when he has done his job.

No, no-one I ever talk too expects him to be a Reiwoldt or TV. If he could consistently play as he did last night then I don;t think there would be too many complaints. History shows that he has trouble keeping to that standard. Again, we don't have better atm, but we need to try and aim for better.

Re: The positive Luke McGuane thread

if luke can snag 40-50 goals this year, he could, against all odds, be our MVP

BTW mid, sorry i carried on a bit last night. I made myself a tankard of stiff margarita at 3/4 time to start celebrating and then just tipped it down my throat nervously as the blues came. I regret carrying on like a *smile* on pre in the ensuing haze. 8-
