Liam McBean

Was left pretty underwhelmed by Liam's performance, had a couple of contests where he had a chance to show us what he had and he failed miserably not looking to have improved much on what he showed 12 months ago , a bloody long way to go, much further than I tjought

Hard to disagree with that.

Memo Liam, I know footy is complex, defensive positioning , rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb
But when the balls coming you just have to go for it, someone needs to remind everyone to just go for those marks
It's one of the reasons Griffiths looked a bit special last year, and Hampson looked a bit ordinary

I'd just keep playing a strong mid sized tall against him. At Richmond that would be Grimes or Chaplin.

I'm still not seeing much strength in the contest.
Maybe that will come, I certainly hope so.

You know that dressy color thing happens in footy too.

We look at players and some people will see the article through whatever bias, chromatic or otherwise, they possess.

I think Beanie is a ripper because he is so efficent, skilled, smart and creative.

I also see a skinny 202 cm kid but I know that time and development will change that. I have seen that for a skinny kid he doesn't mind the physicality and can hit a contest when he needs to.

I am hoping that the Richmond brains trust see the same and their work on Liam is to increase his ability to get to more contests because the more contest he gets to the better we will be as a team.

While never able to be proven I am convinced that if he had played against Carlton in rd 20 of 2013, we would have finsihed top 4. He was coming off 11 goals in his last two games and was flying at Coburg. Would have ended up playing on Bootsma as Mcguane did. He would have pantsed Bootsma in the form he was in.

Instead he played at Coburg the next day in the bog. I went to see the game and it was painful. Coburg mids were horrible , the weather diabolical, Coburg were being shellacked by double figue goals and Beanie was surrounded by two or three talls at all times and was flying two and three deep to try and lift his team and literally throwing himself at every contest without regard for his welfare.

I left at half time and thought to myself how a thouroughbred like Beanie was playing in the bog at Coburg when it was the natural domain of a carthorse like Mcguane.

On getting home I learnt that Liam ripped his ankle in half in the second half.

Meanwhile Lukey nevr donned the Richmond jumper again.

While Liam has regained his small game after a fairly lengthy rehabilitation and adjustment period, I still dont think he has regained his balance or confidence in aerial contests.

If Beanie plays in the firsts he will be number 3 or 4 forward and he will hurt teams who concentrate on Jack, Martin, Lids and Griff first.

For all hius weaknesses re strenth and tank, he must play soon and regularly. He has been poorly developed so far and he should be playing first team football.

I hope it's at Richmond but if he doesn't get a go soon he should go to another club because he is too good to stagnate at VFL level.

I really like McBean but the part of this that I totally disagree with is that he has been mismanaged and should have played in the seniors.

From what I have seen of him at Coburg and in Richmond 2nd he has played mostly as a giant half forward flanker. Incredibly clever and dangerous for a big man.

He has never taken enough marks or got to enough marking contests and if he doesn't do that on the big stage his crumbing and agility will not be enough, he will just get buffeted out of the contest.

he has to be a double threat at AFL level, both in the air and on the ground. That doesn't mean he has to mark like Royce Hart, it just means that he needs to take a few grabs, get to contests and cause crumbs. His agility will make it hard for the 200cm guy he has to play on then rather than the more mobile 3rd tall who would play on him now who won't be threatened by his marking and can match him on the ground.

Once he does what he needs to do then unleash him but he isn't ready imo.

Griffinator has come from a lower junior base than Beanie n it's taken him five years to put glimpses into genuine potential. Beanie's had two years n still has plenty of time to grow n develop. Just wish fans would stop expecting all the kids to own the comp within their first season or two.

I take your point Sin, but IMO he will play better in the firsts than the seconds when he has better payers to both deliver and receive from him.

He wont be the perfect player, but he will cause headaches for the opposition immediately. A couple of opportunist goals or assists in a quarter and opposition coaches will have to tinker with tehir preferred back 6 and that brings Martin, Deledio, Griff into the game.

If they run off him or expose him another way you can always rotate him through the bench or red vest him.

But the potential pay off is too big to just let him rot in the twos!

Same could be said for Todd Elton as well. Played pretty well on Boyd - only played a handful of games and is now showing some promise. It's his 4th year? He's almost like one of the forgotten men on the list.

Liam needs to step up another level this year - I think he'll get his chance. He'll need to because Reece McKenzie I'm sure will happily fill the void if Liam can't.

Ha ha, you express it very well Lamby.

McBean doesn't need patience.

He needs imagination.

Throw him in with the seniors and watch him create.

Unfortunately we have a head coach with a mind like a lump of cement.

If he doesn't get a go this year, he'll leave. I'd like to see him play in at least one more pre-season game.

So the kid sweats it up in the VFL for a couple of years - do him some good. It's not easy making a living out of playing footy is a lesson more players than less could use.

But I'm not one to know if he's ready or not - if he is - get him in there! Let him show what he can do. Would rather see him playing than Morris getting a game as a 'defensive' forward.

This is Eltons third season.
Season hasn't even started yet, they are still practicing how to do this year. He's had two years n still got plenty of learning n growing to do.
