Juniors to watch - 2012

Hey Scoop,

What's Haynes kicking like. Phenomenal athlete though.

Ben Kennedy I really like the look of and would be an upgrade on King. Shannon Taylor is another small forward. Both lightning quick and skillful.

Midfield wise Vlastuin, O'Rourke, Atkins, Wines and Menzel are skilled and a reasonable size. Vlastuin as a long term Tuck replacement.

Another speculative player I like from West Adelaide is Mason Middleton. Killed it at under 18's and already played a bit of league. Lovely size for a KPF. Think he is 191cm and 95kg. Uses his body quite well.

Rockliff had broken his leg the season before the draft and was not 100% during his last TAC year. I spoke to FJ a month before the draft and sugested that Rockliff would only get better as his draft camp results woul have been still affected by his leg break. I also mentioned that his team mates considered him a freakshow.

In FJ's defence he probaly gets many sugestions about who we should look at in the draft and in the end has to go with the information he has at hand.

Was actually a broken ankle in 2006, with plate and screws inserted for a year.
Here's part of what I posted in 2010

The injury was a very serious one to the ankle and more particularly the ligaments around the ankle. Tommy was injured in July of the 2006 U-16 National Championships.
He was still essentially doing recovery at the start of the 2007 season. Against instructions from the Bushrangers, who I believe wanted him to take a conservative approach to a serious injury, Tommy started playing with his local club, Benalla Saints, in the early rounds of GVFL. I think he may have missed the first match or two of the season. He was one of the best players for Benalla and was then grabbed back by the Bushrangers for the last 12 of the TAC season.

In the 2007 TAC season Tom was named in the best 8 times in 12 games, averaged 21.5 disposals per games with an efficiency of 67.9%, was the second highest goal scorer in the competition with 40 at an average of 3.27.

Note that yandb's post is in that thread as well three replies later.
And I was wrong, he was competition leading goalkicker in 2008, not 2007.

Ah Tom Rockliff, How the hell did all clubs pass on this bloke over & over in the National draft,as Scooper describes above why would you not choose a natural footballer that kicked goals???

Because he did nothing through the course of the U18 Champs.

You should have seen and heard Wellsey of Geelong 'pissing' himself when Rockliff kicked 3 goals in 5 minutes after doing absolutely nothing for the other 75 minutes at the Cranbourne game.

The TAC GF was a hard game to judge any improvement in him, as the "Bushies" thrashed the "Stingers". You didn't know whether Rockliff had improved, or whether he was merely 'front-running' on his team-mates efforts.

I still reckon he's one-way traffic, however, I did recommend him for a rookie spot based on Y&B's recommendation to me.

Some of the players below would be the sort of the players who I think we should be looking at drafting.

For those in the know are these kids all potential first round draft picks?

For me Nick Vlastuin sounds like someone who would be very high on FJ list.

Vic Metro

Nick Vlastuin, Northern Knights, 19 April 1994, 187cm, 83kgs
Nick is a quality inside midfielder who has developed an outside game. He's a good kick off his right foot, but he's sound on both sides. He's very competitive, makes good decisions and tends to take charge out on the ground and make things happen. He's a quality young man who leads by example - a real coach's player. AIS-AFL Academy member.

Jonathan O'Rourke, Calder Cannons, 21 April 1994, 183cm, 75kg
He's in his second year in the AIS-AFL Academy and he's developing into a very rounded midfielder in terms of his inside and outside game and he has a very good tank. He's a very good decision maker with excellent kicking skills and good hands in close. He's not a big lad, but he's actually quite a good tackler for his size. He tends to lead by example, but is developing those leadership qualities.

- Vic Metro talent manager Anton Grbac

Vic Country

Lachie Whitfield, Dandenong Stingrays, 18 July 1994, 184cm, 74kg
Lachie's been in the AIS-AFL Academy for the last two years and won the player of the national carnival award for us as an under-age player last year. He's an outstanding, skilful player who has been touted as a very early draft pick. He played well in the Academy-Box Hill game before they went on tour. He's been playing most of his footy with his school this year.

Jake Stringer, Bendigo Pioneers, 25 April 1994, 191cm, 91kg
Jake is an interesting player because he's coming off missing 12 months with a broken leg. He's done all the hard work and is starting to play some sound TAC Cup footy, so it will be interesting to see how he plays against higher quality opposition. He's a forward [who kicked nine goals a few weeks back] and he's got his spring back, which is good.

Ollie Wines, Bendigo Pioneers, 7 October 1994, 185cm, 83kg
Ollie is a right-footed, inside midfielder and his form since he came back from the Academy tour has been exceptional, which is really encouraging. He's grown a fair bit in the last year and his finishing skills are pretty good.

Tim Membrey, Gippsland Power, 26 May 1994, 188cm, 87kg
Tim was added late to the AIS-AFL squad. He played predominantly as a key forward last year and is a real goalkicker. We're working with him to play a bit higher up the ground.

- Vic Country talent manager Leon Harris

South Australia

Jimmy Toumpas, Woodville-West Torrens, 2 January 1994, 183cm, 77kg
Jimmy played in last year's champs and he's a genuine chance to be a high draft pick. While everyone talks about his excellent Grand Final [for the Eagles' premiership team], I think his whole finals series was outstanding. It indicates to me that he's almost capable of playing senior AFL footy right now.

Troy Menzel, Central Districts, 22 September 1994, 186cm, 77kg
Troy is the brother of Geelong's Daniel and he's a very cluey midfielder-forward who can really find the footy and use it pretty well. He's very evasive around a contest and can really find his way in and out of traffic very quickly. He's up and about and travelling pretty well with a very strong football club in Central Districts.

Sam Mayes, North Adelaide, 20 May 1994, 187cm, 78kg
Sam is a forward-midfielder who is really an elite kicker of the football, which is paramount these days. He's got a number of strings to his bow - we played him down back a bit in last year's champs and he did that successfully - and he brings a real energy to the team.

- SA talent manager/coach Brenton Phillips

Western Australia

Dayle Garlett, Swan Districts, 9 January 1994, 180cm, 75kg
Dayle is a slick, skilful midfielder with an excellent work rate. He has the ability to really turn a game on its head. We're really happy with his progress in our academy after a few setbacks early on. He's come back with a point to prove. He's been a regular senior player for Swan Districts.

Jesse Hogan, Claremont, 12 February 1995, 193cm, 91kg
Jesse is a powerful key forward/defender in the mould of Jonathan Brown. He's good overhead and very explosive off the mark for his size. We almost considered playing him in our under-18s team as a 16-year-old. He'd be in the top two or three players in the WAFL colts competition. He falls into the GWS mini-draft pool.

Marco Paparone, East Fremantle, 3 September 1994, 193cm, 84kg
Marco has elite endurance and has the ability to wear down opponents. He's a midfielder-forward who is strong overhead and can get outside well. For a boy of his size, he has excellent athletic attributes.

- WA talent manager Raff Guadagnino

I'll lead the "Get Sam Heavyside to Richmond" campaign. Love the way this kid goes about it. A bit of Taylor Adams/Luke Ball about this bloke. Probably a good target for our 2nd round comp pick that's tide to Port. He may go up the order if he has a good Champs though.

Looks to me we like we can fix up this classy half forward/mid problem in this draft no worries.

NT u/18's beat Vic Metro last night up here in Darwin. Start salivating people. Ben and Willi Rioli were outstanding.

Are they similar players to cyril? Just thinking of a rioli at RFC makes me excited. A Cyril is the piece of the puzzle we need to fullfill.

Not sure about Willi, but Ben's father was Sebastian who passed away last month.
Spent some time in the territory from 92-2000, some of the older blokes would say sebby was better than Maurice but had bad knees.

How deep will the quality go in the draft this year?

For the first four rounds, a econd round is like a first, third like a second, fourth like a third.

That's what the experts are saying and the limited TAC I have seen.

By all reports this could be the draft that makes or breaks us. If we draft deap, get our picks right and manage to pick up a quality player from free agency we have the chance to set ourselves up very nicely for the future.

With the compo pick, giving us three very good early picks, and the chance to grab someone through free agency we should be able to add that class and depth we really need.

One to watch for those with Foxtel is Vic Country player Taylor Garner. A lead up half forward with nice hands and great kick in the Ryan O'Keefe mould, exactly what we need. He was my smokey until the National Champs show on the AFL site mentioned him today. If his form continues he will be in the first round mix and likely on our watch list along with Sam Mayes from SA.
