Juniors to watch - 2012

At the G watching St Pat's and St Bernard's. I really like the look of Tanner Smith and Nick Rippon.

St Pat's far to good. Most of their team play for North Ballarat.

I guy i know was talking up Smith hed be a nice pick up with one of our 2nd rounders if he lasts which im told he likely wont.

Told me he would be a good specialist KPD to have developing.

Dont think we will get a look at him though.

I personally havent seen him or any of the juniors this year.

Smith looks like a safe pick for mine. I also liked the look of Jack Neade as a later pick. Also I liked the look of Gleeson as a Rookie pick.

Lot's of good kids coming out of Ballarat this year.

More then ever, if we get this first three picks right and walk away with one A grade talent and two core footballers who are mids, we can make the leap next year.

We are not that far off being a top 6 side but it can go the other way really quickly as well.

Listening to Hardwick today on SEN, he mentioned midfield depth as one of our biggest issues.

Also from what he said, I expect us to utilise the rookie system as more of a back up in players if we get a bad run with injuries. Players like Myke Cook, Shane Valenti etc to be our priority in filling the vacant rookie spots.

About time too, more than ever, depth is the key to maintaining form over the entire season. Just take a look at the Bombers, 18 soft tissue injuries over the course of the year and very little in reserve.

What did Valenti ever do wrong at Melbourne? Racked up the footy whenever he played from memory and always seem pretty good in the VFL.

Yeah, was an interesting interview Smoking.

Mentioned he thinks the season should be shorter, that clubs will look to use the rookie list more as insurance (leysy's word) to cover your team when injuries bite.

Also poignant was the topic of state league players, brought up how at home Morris has been at AFL level since day 1 & he's a good example of the amount of players that are ready to go. Dermott asked if we had designated recruiters looking at state league games. Dimma said we struggle to have the recources to get around them as our 3 recruiters plus there part-time assistants have there hands full. No mention of Hartley or anyone else in that area at all.

Disgrace if we dont have enough resources to adequately cover state leagues the country over. Disgrace.

For what our list needs, if the club arent putting enough into this area or the recruiting dept or are knocking back extra people it needs serious investigation. We can benefit from focusing on this area more than any other club ATM.

Like not employing the Coburg coach our priorities have been wrong. At last this looks like changing thankfully.

I mentioned rookie listing Valenti a couple years ago but got shot down in flames on PRE for suggesting it.

Still think he's a bit stiff not being on an AFL list. Better than at least half of Melbourne's current list IMO.

It sounded to me like he was a liitle unsure about SL scouting. Pretty clear though:

Richmond made another telling appointment in Blair Hartley (former Essendon opposition scout, then Port Adelaide recruiter) as the club’s ‘‘pro scout’’, or recruiter analysing other AFL, VFL and other state league lists. Other clubs had such a scout but not the Tigers.

Now on the RFC site Hartley is listed as opposition and list analyst while Nick Austin is listed as opposition analyst and pro scout.

Agree Leysy, it kind of reminds me of the fiasco of the rookie draft several years ago when we couldn't even fill our quota. To be the best we have to also be one of the best resourced clubs on the recruiting front. The State Leagues represent a massive opportunity to improve our bottom end and I hope Hartley recognises this fact.

Think we need to have at least a Reserves Team Manager in place for next year to set up the structure of staff and players for the new team in 2014.
Would be an advantage if that person (or another) had a good grasp on recruiting players and coaches, involved this draft and looking at VFL, country and TAC through next year, to help in both putting a team list together for the Reserves team and drafting mature players for Richmond.

Dimma should know this. Slightly concerning that we aren't acros the SL's yet.

bigpong video has just put up replays of under 18 champioships games for anybody interested

Really like Kennedy but the more that I think about it, Oliver Wines would be a perfect fit.

Agree.

I took it as we don't have enough resources to cover all the players we would like in the state leagues.

A big concern, clearly still miles behind in recruiting.
