Jay Schulz [Merged]

Why not try him in the backline? We're pretty devoid of big bodies in the backline, and a few years back he did quite well back there.

Might as well give him another shot down back, considering he definitely hasn't got what it takes to be a forward. At least give him games to increase his trade prospects.

First up, he can't get a game in the worst team in the comp, so stop calling him trade bait. You would get very little for him.

Secondly, it's all about list management. So far many of you are raving about Jack and Cleve, neither of whom have any more evidence than Jay that they can take the next step. Even assuming one of them does, and I sincerely hope they do, what happens when you get a couple of injuries to key players, who do you have standing by to take their place?

Jay is worth little on the trade market, he may still have some improvement left in him, and if all else fails he would be a good depth player to have on your list to plug a few holes that are bound to come up.

You'd be surprised how much other teams would value an athletic 190+ 22y/o with 5 years experience in the AFL.

Yes he hasn't delivered so far, but he's shown glimpses. And we can highlight that if we look to trade him.

Been done, don't think he can play the full 4 quarters down back.

With Thursfield coming on, Polak killing it, Bowden his usuall reliable self and McGuane another tall option, why on earth would you want to upset the balance by throwing Schulz back there. Schulz was killed in a reserves game playing back. As someone said, a forward or nothing for Schulz. I wouldn't be getting too excited on attaining a great draft pick for Schulz. Maybe part of a multi-player trade.

Brisbane might be the place for Shulz they would be looking for someone his type see if we can do a deal to get Charmen & Meyer maybe Sydney would be keen need some guys with skill & pace would be a good fit with Kirk Bolten Ablett & Buchanan getting the ball out to him not sure what Sydney would have to trade maybe Jarred Moore or Dempster?

I really doubt Schulz will be traded at season's end unless we can pick up a suitable trade ( ie. another seasoned key forward) in return. Someone like Ryan Murphy for example.
The reason being if Richardson goes down with injury in '08 which is very possible, then who on the list(Brown aside) has the proven ability to kick goals as a FF consistently? Kingsley?!?! Perhaps Hughes but perhaps not too. Still early days for him and even more so Riewoldt to know whether either will be any more successful as a goalkicker than Jay.

I think if for nothing else Schulz will be keep on the list for the final year of his contract as a depth player. His trade value would currently be very low and the risk of someone picking him up for a song and then him becoming a success elsewhere is hardly worth it. In any rate it's unlikely they'd pick up the remains of his current contract which still has a year to run.

Heck he may even click next season as he's still only 22.
I hope so but if he doesn't, then at the end of '08 he'll likely be delisted or traded of for peanuts and I won't be arguing for him to be retained.

Good point ToO we at least have a few key forwards now even though they are unproven with Hughes Riewoldt Pattison & Shulz it's hard to find good key position players who can kick goals so maybe worth persisting with till contracts end but we desperately need a big bodied ruckman to help out Simmonds & if trading Shulz means we get a Charmen or the like then you would have to seriously look at it.

Still clinging to hope hey oldie.......actually I agree with you on this one. Whilst he has been disappointing at the moment there is still no one better to take over if Richo suffers a long term injury. Yes we have Hughes, Jack, Pattison and co, but at the moment Schulz is still better credentialled to hold down a KPF spot if we are hit by injury. However if Hughes, Jack or someone else starts to put their hand up he would have cause to worry just a tad.

So much talent, but seems to lack that desire. Makes you wonder what our recruiters base there assessment of attitude around when you consider him, Meyer and a few others who would appear mentally soft at times.

Cheers gus.
Add to the fact that we've lost Gaspar along with the likely delists of talls Kingsley, Hall, Knobel & Moore then it isn't hard to make an argument for a seasoned body like Schulz to stick around for one more season. Although I'm sure plenty will make an argument against it.. ;D

Poor old Jay.

Richo kicks 3 goals from 9 attempts. Add to that the 4 or so times he gave away a stupid in the back free kick, and the other 2 times he went for the mark one handed. That makes 3 goals for the 15 times or more that he had the ball kicked to him.

Do you reckon Jay has ever had the ball kicked to him 15 times in the one game? And if he did, do you think he might then be a good chance to kick more than 3 goals?

Richo is a champ, don't get me wrong I love the big lug, but Jay has had some high expectations of the return you get from a player that is constantly rotated on and off the bench, and then largely ignored by our Richo focussed midfielders when he is on.

If Jay had kicked those 4 goals he sprayed against WC, an out of character display from Jay, there would be no question of his value to the team as a young developing key forward.

In regard to poor Jay .............. there is one glaring omission re Richo having the ball kicked to him 15- 20 times a game is purly and simply this ....Richo workks 100 times harder to present and make contests, with multiple leads, none of which Jay does.

Thats one obvious reason the bloke is starved of opportunities, he lacks presence and therefore does not demand the footy be kicked to him.

That and also the fact many of those moving the ball forward have no footy smarts vision and lack ability.

I am a fan of Schultsz but his game for Coburg v Ballarat on the weekend left me wondering where his future lays.

Despite this I think he is well worth perserving with. He does have courage, leads strong and hard at the footy and is generally a good kick. I agree he does not have enough of the footy kicked to him during a game.

Come back to me the day Schulz gets 23 possessions, 16 marks and 3 goals in the SECONDS and then we can start talking about Schulz as a potential replacement for Richo.

I would be absolutely ecstatic if Schulz got that much of the leather in the Twos, I would think we really had a player of the future. If wishes were fishes...
PS Lest we forget Richo's three goal assists absolute gimmies real Kingsley specials.

The worrying thing is at Coburg Schulz is often playing in a winning team as well.
