Jay Schulz [Merged]

I have a plan for Jay Schulz.

1) Drop him back to Coburg until round 16 to make him hungry.

2) Bring him back in round 16 but request that all players kick it to him on every possible occasion.

3) Jay then averages 4 or 5 goals a week until the end of the year.

4) Trade him to Adelaide or the Bulldogs for a early second round draft pick.

5) Good bye Jay :wave

Doesn't have enough grunt. Another passenger who I've lost patience with. It's a shame because he can definitely play. He's just too lazy.

Sure is... and the problem is, that we arnt going to getmuch for him... if anything!
Went back last night... was there for 5 mins... cost us a goal cause he forgot how to punch. and was dragged!
Looks like he needs a couple more at Coburg... at least untill he shows consistant form!

Defended him pre-season. Defended him up to the West Coast game

Since then absolute Bollocks. Him and Richo have no cohesion. How many fing times do they cannon into each other and one of them has blood streaming from there face.

Very dissapointing

Bumped into another Tiger supporter at a birthday party yesterday up here in Canberra. Meeting other Tiger fans/supporters is becoming a more common event these days up here even though we are *smile* - anyway got chatting about the players list and he reckons Schulz is going to be a top player.

I cannot see it - for mine he appears out of his depth in the AFL - and out of position because he mis-reads the play coming forward at him (this could be due to the Richo focus our mid-fielders have though).

I read on here that others think he is gone too. Others want to try him again after a stint in the VFL - I just don't think he wants it badly enough.

Am I missinig something with this player?

This is what I think -

As a forward I think Jay Schulz is limited for a couple of reasons.
*Isn’t overly quick - Not slow but doesn’t explode out of the block.
*Gets the majority of the ball in front on the lead, but he doesn’t protect the ball area well enough. i.e. he isn’t strong around the shoulder/arm area. Combine this with he lack of absolute pace he will always struggle against good defenders who have his measure for pace.
*Can definitely jump but isn’t strong enough in contested marking situations. In saying this he has spent 5 years in the system and I reckon his body isn’t going to get a lot bigger. In saying this, his positioning in the marking contest isn’t great so he doesn’t use his smarts to get around the lack of strength and size.

Thus as a forward IMO he is pretty limited.

But...I think not all is lost. I would give him a prolonged stint in the backline. Because
*He has ample speed and jumping ability. This means if he learns how to position he CAN jump over the top.
*He is courageous and is not afraid to tackle or put his body on the line.
*Field kicking is good and he makes decent decisions.
*Not afraid to zone off (does it too much).

To make him a good backman he needs to learn-
*How to wear someone really tight. Just lift the work rate and be within 2-3 meters of his opponent at all times.
*If he can implement a *smile*-esque man-checking then he has the tools to be a good backman.
**Yes he did get towled up against Miller against Coburg. Miller worked really hard as he does and got hit up, Schulz often wasnt close enough (work rate). In the contested situation Schulz was beaten but he wasnt doing much wrong in terms of positioning. Just beaten on the day. If you always panic and write backman off after one towling up then they are never going to learn. I bet the better defenders over the last 20 years all got a fair few bags kicked on then.

In summary, if Schulz plays forward he will forever be a 2 goal player. Not imposing enough to be a key forward. As a defender he has ample ability and just needs to lift his workrate. I would let him play back at Coburg and hopefully his form warrants selection.

Interesting post but IMO has no hope of being a backman. Has failed there everytime he has played there (and most of the time up forward as well)

TW wanted him down back, didn't he?

Maybe it's a case of saying 'defence or nothing'.

I think with a little effort, and some luck, he could become a good VFL player.

Schulz's resemblance to Freo's Ryan Murphy is uncanny - born a month apart, both #12 draft picks in successive years, similar height and weight; both have low possession counts and high accuracy. Murphy has been out of favour since R1 but could be set for a recall after kicking 8 in the WAFL on the weekend. I wish Sarge would demand a game with a similar performance at Coburg.

Wallace put him down back I thought, out of necessity and to teach him a bit about the game. Ie chasing forwards around, learning where they lead and how hard they work....

Either he is a slow learner, or he's just not going to put in the required effort.

Is this the first season he hasn't had a major injury?

I believe so.

JS is not talented enough to play key forward at AFL level IMO.

I concede that I know heaps about lack of talent, skip. ;D

Since we are tanking it now the seasons gone, play Richo at chf and Shulz at ff atleast to get his trade value up, cause other teams will look at how many goals he kicks for trade value.

Schulz is not a backman and not going to be. It's up forward or nothing IMO..
I have been terribly disappointed with his season to date as I was hoping this would be the breakout year for Jay. Hopefully not all is lost yet.

Excellent comparison re Ryan Murphy L2R2R. Another player I expected to soar this year and has fizzed. :don't know
