Re: Jay Schulz

One of the issues that's never been resolved to my mind is- is he good enough to play full forward?

I reckon he's good enough to play CHB. He's the sort of bloke you could punt and then find that his next coach plays him in the right position and he blossoms.

It's not a disgrace not to be good enough to play FF. There are sixteen blokes playing CHB in the AFL and none of them is good enough to play FF. And I include Chad Cornes in that group. A champion CHB and a very average FF IMO.

I'm a fan of the Sarge but I doubt very much that he's good enough to play FF.

Yet!

Be interested to know where he played most of his footy prior to RFC. Certainly hasn't developed a forward's footy brain - is even struggling with the pace of AFL IMO. That's why it would be good for him to play on a Pavlich, Hansen, Fevola, Lucas and co to appreciate work rates, second efforts and team play. Seriously - play him on Lucas tonight

The AFL draft wrap from 2002 described Schulz as a "strong marking forward who can also play in defence". I hope that clears things up!

Re: Jay Schulz

His last 5-6 games last year he was doing alot of 2nd efforts, splitting packs and tackling alot.

I think its clear TW dosent like him much. He is treated like crap IMO. Without looking at stats i would think we would be in the bottom few of inside 50's add that to the fact not one of our players could hit a forward on the chest, Richo going for every ball within 50 meters of him, Cleve Hughes for 3 games, Graham Polak in a couple, how slowly we move the ball and it becomes hard to kick many goals.

Yep about as clear as some of these gems from the same draft around Jay Schulz:

Round 1 4 Western Bulldogs TIMOTHY WALSH NORTHERN KNIGHTS 14/05/1985 194.5cm 83kg
Strong overhead with an excellent spring. Season curtailed by injury mid year. Member AIS/AFL Academy in 2001-2002 & Vic Metro rep this year. From Ivanhoe FC. Speed impressive at National AFL Draft camp recording 2.97sec for 20 metres. Son of Kangaroos CEO Geoff Walsh

Round 1 15 Melbourne NICHOLAS SMITH NORWOOD 27/08/1984 195.8cm 92kg
Strong marking player with good awareness, maturing as a player and athletic type. Captained SA in AFL U18’s this year playing CHB but can play forward. Comes from Clare and attends Sacred Heart College.

Round 2 16 Port Adelaide STEPHEN GILHAM OAKLEIGH CHARGERS 02/09/1984 190.5cm 76kg
Athletic & agile player who is good at ground level. Victoria Metro captain in winning AFL U18 Championship this year earning ALL Aust honours. From Beverley Hills JFC he missed later part of the season due to injury. Has poise, is an excellent decision maker and is very courageous.

Round 2 18 Kangaroos KRIS SHORE EASTERN RANGES 23/03/1985 189cm 80kg

Last 6 games of last year, there were 2 games in which he had 12 tackles, in the other 4 games he had 1 tackle only. Last 2 of this year he has had 1 tackle. The boy has the ability to lay hard tackles, so why the discrepancy? If he doesn't have the desire or thinks he's hard done by then he doesnt deserve to be in the team. We need players who fight aversity not wallow in self-sorrow. AFL is tough, only the toughest survive. If he has what it takes, he will fight hard in the seconds claw his way back in the team, and take the opportunity as best he can, even if that means doing second efforts, splitting tackles and tackling alot.

Gilham is doing very well for Hawthorn. Has something like the 3rd or 4th least goals conceded by a key defender.

Yeah, thanks After posting it was driving to Eumundi and was listening to Hawks/Eagles on ABC and was wondering whether there was two of em, or whether the Hawks now had him ;D

My only point was what they say are the key attributes of a player as a junior don't always follow through in AFL. Gilham probably shouldn't be there on that basis.

Jay Schulz

It saddens me to say this as I rate Jay- but he does not deserve his spot in the senior side at the moment.

Riewoldt or Hughes should replace him next week.

He needs to get some bags at Coburg to find his confidence.

Not getting a decent run on the ground from TW if you ask me. He should play out of the goalsquare - not Richo or KK!! 5 mins on, 20 mins off doesn't allow a key forward to get into the game.

Send him back to Coburg so he can then try & earn his spot back & then let him have another go at seniors.Hard to see him remaining at the club unless there is a dramatic improvement in form.

jay has kicked one large bag of goals in his entire career, a terrible return from a key forward playing his fourth full season. Time is just about up up and I feel he'll be on the trade table at tears end. Furthermore, I feel Terry doesn't rate the guy and will probably find himself at Coburg in the near future. My guess is Jay will be at Adelaide next season along with Danny Meyer.

Did he play last night.

Seriously - struggles to know what hes meant to be doing at times IMO.

Last night if he left our forward line he looked lost. - Thats not even mentioning when he was up forward.
