Re: Jay Schulz

I mean lets face it, although Cleve and Jack are promising, if we can have a fit and firing Schulz we look alot better; hes worth giving a bit more time to

Ok MB - Please tell me your forward setup in the RFC forward line for the next three years if you had the choice now and had to stick to it to move the club into a solid finals appearance. Just interested to know mate.

With you TB82, I'd rather see the back of Ray Hall, KK, Knobel than Schulz.
Sarge still has a lot to offer the RFC.

Re: Jay Schulz

I think everyone is reading to much into this. Simple fact is Jay got dropped because he was struggling with form, nothing more nothing less. All this hype about his future being in doubt is a bit premature IMHO. If he wants to succeed then its up to him. He now has to go back get some form and confidence and put his hand up for a recall.

It is great IMHO that this is happening as it sends a clear message to all and sundry that your spot will not be guaranteed if you don't perform and it has been far to long since this has been the situation at the RFC.

Whilst i agree that he may have deserved to be dropped (if richo was fit) i still think that he deserved to be given a crack in the absence of richo. Competition for spots is a glorious thing and i agree that it has been a long time since it has happened at the club, i still think it was poor timing and especially against a backline with a bull like mal michael, i think you do need a bit of size so he's not smashing smaller bodied players. I suspect it may be more than just a bit of poor form, something to do with attitude (suspect, nothing factual) and i hope to hell that Jay can prove himself get back into the team and become the forward we hope he can be.

Re: Jay Schulz

Are we using Jay Schulz correctly ? Every club seems to have a guy that has a lot of potential, but always seems to be given a restricted run at things. Is Jay Schulz our guy in that respect ?

Schulz isnt without faults (for mine, he can sometimes play lazy, never looks fit enough during the pre season and should have a much bigger body at his age and given the years he’s had in the system) but there is no doubt he has talent. He’s one of the few guys in our team who can take a grab and kick it properly.

However, he seems to always be stuck on the bench for long periods of time – even when he’s right in the game, taking marks and kicking goals. I think it was in the WCE game, he was playing well but missing a few shots, but Wallace dragged him off for an extended period and our entire forward line went flat shortly thereafter. Seems to happen a lot, getting dragged to the bench just as he’s starting to look dangerous.

You add to the fact that the club never seems to know where they want to settle him – chf or chb – and is it any wonder the bloke is struggling for consistency ?

I would actually include Schulz in our future forward setup but he needs a kick up the bum & needs to get fair dinkum. He needs to know you have to earn your spot in the seniors.

Fair enough MB - what about the rest of the forward structure mate?

Re: Jay Schulz

Jay's games down back have been servicable.I think were forgetting he could be a very good backman.Doesn't deserve to be delisted like some are saying, however he needs time back at Coburg to regain confidence!

Off the top of my head the forwardline would include JR,Hughes,Schulz & Pattison & a couple of small forwards who may not even be at the club at the moment.I don't see Pettifer or Krak in our future forward setup.

Re: Jay Schulz

The issue for me is that there is very little real pressure for places in the forward set-up, and in all honesty there hasn't been any pressure for places for years. Krack/Pett/Meyer/Bling (smalls) Hughes/Schulz/KK/Riewoldt (talls) are all much of a muchness at the moment. Not a dominant player in the lot. We have Richo with all of his qualities and flaws and Brownie who we can't get on the park as our true AFL players. The rest for mine are strugglers in 2007, Petts is unique in falling back to struggler classs, the rest have never gotten out of it. As always we live in hope that 2008 will be different.

Riewoldt and KK can feel a little hurt by this analysis given that they are yet to be given a chance to prove themselves but KK wasn't let go because he was an absolute gun that Geelong wanted to share with the rest of the competition in a selfless spirit of giving and I am hardly expecting a first gamer to be "the answer" in his first year of footy.

I like Shulz as a player in defence or in the forwards - only because he can kick to a target or between the big sticks, and he can mark, I just wish he could find a way to get into the game more. Don't know if it is a lack of strength, ability, experience, endurance or nouse that is stopping him and really, I don't care either, I just want it to change so that if he got injured we would actually really miss him.
