I'd expect Rance to play a more attacking role too.

? Rancey is one of the most attacking backmen in the league. I would have thought anyway. People are underselling Grimes' attackingness too i reckon.

I don't think Batch will ever be a star, but has come back well from where I thought he was gone to be performing a role OK. Can improve.

To me, there appear to be three alternatives for our HBFs for the short term.

Either we recruit rebounding HBFs,
Reposition Vlastuin & Ellis to HBFs and hope they develop quickly, or
We recruit more genuine goal-kicking midfielders and drop the likes of Deledio & Cotchin back to HBFs.

We can pick up junior rebounding HBFs, but they do take a number of years to develop properly.
Unless I've forgotten someone, Merv Keane stands out as the last 18yo RFC HBF who was able to hold his own against top opposition in finals.
I reckon we should target mids at the draft, which will in the end result in mids spilling over to the flanks. Targeting half flankers at the draft has its risks in my opinion.

That's Rance's natural game. I'd expect him to play it even more, with Astbury coming back to take the big gorillas.

Grimes has shown some attacking flair on occasion (last years game vs Saints) but he needs to improve in this regard. All the best sides are filled with guys who are solid kicks out of the back half, who are a factor attacking as well as defending.

has grimes played 50 games yet? 'filled with guys' is overstatement. Have a higher proportion sure

Batchelor should be modelling his game on Corey Enright.

If we play a +1 defence he is our man. Reads the game well.

He needs to work on his fitness also like many have mentioned.

He will be doing plenty of sprint work this off season it seems.

Seen Hawthorn's backline? Not a bad kick among them. They're the benchmark and who we should be modelling ourselves on.

Port, Swans, Cats etc all have players who are strong rebounders and kicks whether they are flankers or not.

I've noticed he's training with a fitness instructor on hard running on his instagram. Could be something to watch next season.

Must have a middle name beginning with 'A'. Ellis kept calling him 'Jab' in the new training video
