Looks to lack a bit of confidence, punching instead of marking and some half-hearted tackles. I think he'll struggle to make round one.

I don't think he is a walk up either but how much better is the list if Jake Batchelor is your 25th or 26th player?

I think with confidence, he can be a real big weapon.

Now that's depth.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Funny one Jake. Can look a million dollars with his one grab marking or 1 cent when his concentration drops off.

Two things two work on, said concentration and his work below his knees that has always been a weakness.

Other thing that is only reading between the lines, think he may get a bit happy with himself. That happens at 21 y.o. We all did. But if so will need to come out in time.

Definitely a keeper and a good barometer of our depth.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

He would have to pull of a miracle to play Round 1. Even with Grimes out, Carlton's forward line just doesn't suit him. We'd be better playing another tall than Jake. When he is not marking strongly he loses his value to the team. Chaplin should come in and between him and Rance take about 15 marks a game if we are playing 3 talls and Jake will have to bide his time at Coburg.

He couldn't play on Walker?

He could play on anyone but you'd think the fact Walker is an elite runner Jake might be chasing his arse all day. Plus Walkers explosiveness is better suited to a guy like Rance who has the power and strength to match him on the lead and the height to offset Walkers jump in the air.

This is why I hope they play Griff on Kreuzer/Hampson etc. assuming they play a big tall forward assuming Griff plays solid in his next game. It makes Rance and Grimes much more dangerous.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

such a natural defender, easily in our best 22 but might need a kick up the arse every so often to get the best out of him

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I know it's early but I think he's already coming to the cross roads. If he struggles this season I don't think he'll be around very long.

Worries me with handballs that just miss targets. One in the last quarter when he had a mark/free and someone ran past to accept what should have been a straightforward uncontested handball. And it hit the ground. Our bloke got it after it bounced but I just see this as something that happens too often.

That's harsh, why all because of a double fist when he should've marked it?
By your accounts, vickery, foley, king & grimes are all in big trouble this season.

He isn't a bad player, he needs to go for those marks and he will be ok. How about that peanut at hawthorn all he does is fist everything that comes towards him. He fists a set shot at goal that's how bad he is.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

his kicking takes too long and isn't precise enough for the position he plays

Young bloke with time on his side, but he is up against making it, IMHO

Good depth player

Seriously?

Jake is the least of our problems.

We haven't made finals since dinosaurs walked the planet and all of a sudden everyone is a "good Depth" player..
What??

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Saw him on Hurley and Crameri. In each case he gives away two to three stone. In the absence of Grimes he is forced to play tall and is not a big lad. Still did a reasonable job, I reckon.

Hasn't got game at lawn level but a HBF often doesn't. I totally agree with the idea that Jake might be a bit immature in his approach at times.

For mine, not in the starting 22 atm but plenty going on.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I recall this time last year he really struggled. Had a very poor NAB Cup campaign and consequently missed round 1 and played at Coburg.

Two years in a row. Perhaps he just takes time to get his touch.

They tried to move him up the park a bit last year in the NAB cup and he got a bit lost. Not his fault really but he knows where he belongs, took him awhile to get his confidence back after that when he went back to his position.

I reckon they really rate his boot though, he was used a couple of times as the designated 9 point goal kicker from the quick handball from a free kick. It was a set play so clearly the coaches know he can kick it long and accurately.

A Joel Bowden type for mine and a keeper, I've seen him do a few things mere mortals cannot do, he has tricks guys like White, Jacko, or Arnott can only dream about. You don't discard players like that easily.
