I thought Batchelor was really good tonight. Recovered from injuries of last year and in very good touch. Looks to have furnished into the player we hoped he'd become and still with plenty of improvement in him.

Valstuin showed plenty too. Selection quandaries. What a luxury. Reckon Batchelor will get a start Round One.

Has certainly furnished. I think we will see him playing on the taller medium forwards more this year and monster quite a few in the air. Will become a contested marking beast by his mid 20s.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

In wearing the #11 I thought for a flash I was actually watching Joel Bowden sweeping across the back line, and stepping back into the packs.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

yeah, big Batch fan too. It is so refreshing to have solid young guys coming through. For years we were picking up guys like Tambling, Shank Nahas etc who blow away in a stiff breeze. To win finals you have to have a large group of guys whjo are strong over the ball. Ellis, Rasputin, Batch, Conca, Chimp, Martin, Morris, Helbig, O'Hanlon and Arnott are all made of sturdy stuff.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Unimpressed with Jake last night.
Was caught out watching the play at close range rather than getting involved, still over runs the ball, and tackles don't always stick.
I think there is a danger that he gets some lazy habits as the +1 in the back line.

I like Batch, but I still reckon he could go either way. For some weird reason I reckon he gets a bit of an armchair ride on here. Doesn't worry me, but I find it interesting.

I too remain unconvinced he's best 22.

Batch has a lot going for him but with Petterd performing he might find himself missing out.

I look at it like we have a Best 16 and then about 12 blokes all fighting it out. Jake is one of those 12 but because he is young could easily develop and be a permanent by the end of the year.

Yep. I don't mind him, if he's outside the team we're building genuine depth.
I actually see him as 2nd fiddle to Grimesy if fit.

Lackadaisical, as Jack would have said. That sums him up for me, can be good, but intensity and concentration varies a lot. Youth is a valid excuse, but he's not young enough to use that any more, needs to be at his best more consistently

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I really don't see Batchelor's role or strength.

He gives away frees, his isn't quick, big or small, and takes just a bit too long with his actions (which might change).

I see a few options ahead of him.

He needs a smile and some confidence. Hopefully the coaching staff find a strength of his and help him enjoy and develop it.

Showed many strengths early on, the most impressive for me was his marking ability. Then hit by harsh injuries so natrually is going to lose a lot of confidence. If he finds that confidence then his strengths that he previously showed will shine. But still it's great he has to work for his spot due to us building better depth. Make them earn their spot.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Reckon Batch is still waaaaaay better than Petterd.

Let's not get too seduced by Ricky's form, there's something a little flighty about him I don't like. And it is only February, and where other players might be playing for touch, rookies like petterd absolutely must make every post a winner.

Batch is rock solid. he's got a great hoof, his handball, though errant, is certainly skilful enough when he focusses on the possible and not the fantastical.

batch is going to be ok. backline lock for mine.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Batchelor is crucial to our success this year. He can take the bigger forwards and take the midsized forwards as well. His kicking and creative play is good but what has let him down so far in his career is his intensity drops off for moments and thats when he handballs to a teammate in trouble etc.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Quite handy with an intercept mark, is Batch. Graeme Landy style. Though he does occasionally lose his marbles in patches (GWS last year), I'm not ready to kick him to the back of the queue just yet. Petts needs to prove more than Batch IMO. And he might end up forward anyway.
