The free kick before the bounce WAS a free kick, elbowing a guy in the back repeatedly before the ball is in play isn't tough, it's just cheap.

Come on Rocky, we're not playing netball. That type of jostling can be seen dozens of times a game and is part and parcel of professional football. Batch had a stinker but the umps certainly didn't make his day any easier.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Wasn't a free kick, that happens in every single game and it pretty much never gets called. As Cam Mooney said yesterday, he copped that all his career. No consistency in the umpiring, hence this is the problem with the umpiring since the start of time.

Jack would have a load more free kicks if that really was a free kick. Umpire was just whistle happy, anything the keep GWS in the game.

There are lots of frees that fall into this category that aren't paid. The issue to me is that it showed a lack of feel for the game by the umpire. The smart and logical thing to do would be to warn the player and if he does it again then free kick him.

True-but why do the false bravado stuff?

I was more concerned about how easily he was beaton in contests and his inability to bend down.

Tries to get too cute with his kicks and can look casual (ala Griffiths)

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Most players of any professional sport experience 2nd year blues, and Jake is having a solid dose of it right now. He has the tools and just has to work through this year and learn.

The previous week against Freo was the most concerned I've been about JB MII. He pulled out of contests, ran back half arsed and over possesed missing targets with the best of them.

I don't think the wet has helped his game along with a few of his mates, but he will be a good long term player, he will learn and get better from what he gets out of this year, the biggest learning curve of his career.

Excellent post-I agree entirely. I have seen enough examples of not being brave enough to call it a trend. He certainly needs to improve in that area

Agree with you there Onree.
I was disappointed that he was extremely proactive when it came to that off-the-ball macho stuff (which was probably harshy dealt with) - but that he didn't show the same intensity when the ball was there.
Hopefully it's just a bit of lull in form and before long he'll be back at the level he's shown in erlier games,

Yes-agree.

At least if it was say jakey King, you could say go goes hard when he has to and the off the ball stuff is just part of the "agression" package you get with him- Swings and roundabouts

Unfortuantely for Batch, he hasn't shown the same willingness to "go" when it matters and compete hard which makes the push and shove stuff all a bit hollow.

Has lost the plot a bit Jake. His biggest issue for me is he is fumbling so badly that between him and Dea we have no confidence we will win one in ones. Besides that his kicking, marking, decision making and defensive intensity seems to have fallen away. Major concern for me.

agree with all of this. Batch and Dea were terrible. We can blame the conditions if we want, though to me all the weather did was highlight some of his deficiencies. He was extremely soft was batch, fumbled and more importantly his decision making was terrible. He has gone a bit backwards and yes I know its only his second yr but that doesn't mean you put up with it. Thats what the magoos are for and he needs a couple of games there. You can't let this type of performance creep into your game. When its presents itself, you need to give them a spell.

Dea was the same...this guy is hard at but he just gets beaten to much in one on one's, marking contests etc. Turns it over way to much. Spell in the two's would be good for him too.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

A 19 year old having some swings in form, who would have thought?

Batch will be a very good player for us for a long time I am sure of that. He may have to play a few games at Coburg but that doesn't worry me.

As for the knocks on his agility, hardness and kicking I only have one word which sums up my opinion on that.

Wrong.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

This is like a positive feedback cycle, people seem to be trying to out do each other in how bad they saw his game.

A lot on here don't share your confidence or opinion!

I must be watching a different player if you think he is agile- are you just blindly defending every critcism or do you really believe he is good below his knees, hard at the ball and a good kick?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose

Agree. He will be a good player over the long term I have no doubt.

Did you watch any of his performances against St Kilda, Port, Geelong, West Coast or Collingwood ally? If so, what did you think of those games and in particular his kicking?

I get no joy at all but read the insults that were hurled at me in the post, that were totally out of line.

all I did was have an opinion and as a subsequent poster pointed out, I also mentioned some of his good points.

I think when i am called "socially inadequate", I am entitled to point out where my opinion may have had some validity

Maybe they were out of line but don't come over all innocent allybabe. It's a bit rich you have even rejoined PRE considering you called the mods here Nazis and comparing our site to Nth Korea before you left PRE. For some strange reason you like to create controversy by bagging our players. Fortunately it bodes well for them going by how off the mark you were with your personal campaign against Alex Rance. :blah

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Yeah, if ally can do a similar job for Conca, Grimes, Griffiths and Batchelor as she did for Rance we'll have a 10 year dynasty. Go girl.
