Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor
Funny how we see things.
I agree with the coach. Batch to the midfield!

It's not like that Geelong would've of lost if he didn't play in them.
In the 08 GF Rioli gave him a bath!!!
He is just lucky he is playing in a very strong side..

There hasn't been a RFC player achieve anything near that since the mighty KB, if Batchelor is better then that he will have done extremely well.

I dont know how old you are Scoop but for those of us who saw Graeme Landy ,left footed half back errorless player from the early eighties, the similarities are quite staggering.SCOOP said:2011: Pick 30 Richmond, Jake Batchelor. “WHOOOOO?” Yep, I said it. I was dirty we don’t take Luke Parker. But by round 6, I was sold. Rarely do Richmond select composed footballers. We pick players with heart but lack polish. Not with this boy. He is everything you want in a modern day defender. Capable of playing on talls at 188 but enough pace and smarts to take the medium forwards. From day 1, he looked at home. Not once for the entire season did he look overawed with AFL football. His numbers make for odd reading,78% of his touches were uncontested but he ranked elite in the AFL for tackles and pressure in the defensive 50. So we have someone who will chase, tackles and do the hard things when we don’t have at and then as soon as we get the ball he knows how to find space. Once he gets it, his kicking rate was a very healthy %73.4. His left foot was a very safe option to start a attack. Batchelor ranked sixth in intercept possessions at Richmond but generated the third most points from his interceptions. His ability to fade off his man and chop off a kick into the 50 was astounding. Never gets caught out. Reads the play really well defensively and also knows exactly when to burst off into space. All good sides have a defender who somehow always end up in space. Batchelor also follows the football, gives a handball and runs hard to get it back. He is not a hot potato footballer, he attacks with the ball always trying to put the man he gives it too in a better position then he got it in. The week he got the rising star nomination really did give a snapshot of his work for the year.

His ability to read the play makes up for his slight lack of pace off the mark but he is a burst runner, gets to top speed and can hold it for a distance. And he chases over distance, doesn’t give up on a contest until he creates a turnover or has a chance to apply pressure. I think he is the type of football who the forward press really suits. His lack of pace is made up for by his ability to get the right spot defensively and create a turnover.
2012: There is talk of him moving into the midfield but I think his best football will be played in the back half. For me he is a part of our back 6 for the next decade and plays over 150 games. With Deledio pushing into the midfield we need to make sure we have enough composure down back and his ability to force turnovers cannot be underestimated. I think he provides more value in the back half then he can off a wing. We lose more then we gain by him pushing into the midfield. You don’t want to change your back six too much. I don’t want to see Dea, Ellis, Morris all thrown into the mix too early. And I am not sure Batchelor is capable of racking up midfield numbers. Hopefully this year we see have some games of 25+ touches and over time he becomes one of the elite rebounding defenders of the AFL. But for value for money, I think the pick 30 that we used on Batchelor will be one of our best of the past 15 years.

Landy was the type of player that no matter the pressure or circumstance would ALWAYS make the smart choice. Like Weightman, when the ball was in his hands you new it would be in Richmond possetion for the next 2 or 3 possetions.
Batchelor is a huge find for the next 12 years.
