Did Single Man (that's what my mate and I call Jake!) select the No. 11 or was just assigned to him?
Couple times watching the replay of the Hawks match off the AFL site I dead set had to look twice.
I thought Joel Bowden had made a comeback. Is it me or do they look very similar?
Roughly same size, both molly-dookers, similar movements, same initials. Very weird.
Jake appears very cool under pressure like Joel and usually hits the targert as well.

Go the new JB No. 11 ! ;D
Funny you saw this, i said the exact same thing to my Mum the other night. He looks so much like Bowden on the field it's uncanny.

Ah i miss the old holden 202 and 186 where u could still do your own maintance, especially the 3 speed no syncro box where you had to occasionally jump out and lift the bonnet and wrestle with the linkages to get your gears back :cutelaugh ;D

:rofl I had a HK that did that.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Not sure we are doing the best for Jakes development ATM.

Here we have a kid who's played defence all his life, is starting just his 2nd year (& first full pre-season) on an AFL list after a promising first year & yet we are trying to turn him into a wingman/on-baller.

He's already clearly struggling with it, he's making errors we didnt see for all of last year.

His confidence is waining ATM. Lets get him back playing a role we need & that suits his characteristics ASAP ILO before we really damage a talented defender.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Agree.

Maybe made more errors in that game then he did all season last year. Most were forward of centre square too.

I reckon you're spot on, Leysy.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Its taken years before Lids will be released to the midfield.
The Single Man should stay at HB where he does his best work.
Hes a natural HBF and theres nothing wrong with being a great HBF. Weve got plenty of midfielders just need him at HB.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Disagree. The practice matches are exactly the time we should be trying him out in the role.
So he made a few mistakes? Big deal. He also did some very good things in the game.
Stick with it for a while yet.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Looks a little bigheaded at the moment for my liking does young Jake.Stop trying to be so cocky and do the percentage play's that you achieved last season.

i totally agree with you....he was fairly awful tonight and we need a decent half back to release lids and jake was very very impressive there last year

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I'm a fan, but no walk up start for round 1.

Don't agree with Leysy. I thought it was fine he was played on the wing. Can't expect to be HBF every week. Especially seeing as we have about 10 hbfers. It's better he gets exposed in the NAb than in the big stuff.

Probably needs to start the season at Coburg.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

There's nothing wrong with him starting at the lower level if he's learning a new role either if it helps with his development over the long term.

Ellis showed tonight he is every bit as capable as playing the role Batch did last season.

My much bigger disappointment than Batch was Dea. I just can't see the hype coming out of the club with Matty D yet.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

One more point to add, his best asset is his ability to read the play coming at him ILO

It gets him in prime position to get where the balls going before his opponent(s).

We are taking that away from him up the ground.

Not to mention exposing his major weakness (lack of pace) by playing him where you need that quality.

Its easy to forget with him, but Leysy thinks we need to remember he's a 19 y.o kid that is still finding his feet. Lets not chop them off.

Agree. Reckon guys like enright, milburn, shaw have proven you can make a career of being a gun half back. Let him cement a role in the side before handing him others less suitable

He's a walk up start off HB but not off a wing.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Hopefully just an experiment as he is a good mopper up of back half mess.

I don't know about a walk up - we'll see I suppose. Personally I wouldn't play him on that showing.

We have Lids and Houli who are better HBs

Newman will probably play one BP -with a semi-tall to play the other.

Exactly.

Why the reason for trying to find him a new position after 1 highly successful year anyway. Its not as if he was struggling or being found out back there.

Given his ability to play on smalls & talls its unlikely he would be exposed either.

Rather than play him somewhere he's rarely played & potentially set him back, his development would be better spent by given tapes of games from Milburn, Enright & Sam Fisher & be told to strive to emulate them.

Lids will play midfield.

Batch played HB well last year with all of Newman, Houli, Lids there. Ellis will take Lids spot. I don't see the sudden issue.

Agree. We've gotta try out as many players as possible.

Batch's core is all upside so if he fails he knows where to go back to and continue as HBF.

I reckon he can be developed into a wingman.
