i reckon many are selling Batch's defensive efforts short last year, probably cos of the elimination final. he played tall most of the year and was hardly beaten. but he is short to play as a tall, and getting beaten by a talented tall was always a big risk. (especially when our 2nd tall is Chaplin).
we were a bit stuck last year when Waite got on top of him. We could shift Rance onto him, but that would leave Chaplin or Batch on Petrie. Chaplin would have no chance of keeping up with Waite. We could have moved Grimes onto him, but that would expose Batchelors other weakness. he cant play as a small. He would have been chasing Nahas, Thomas, Higgnis or Harvey around.
To play as a 'slow' small, like CEllis is, you need to be able to use the ball. Batchelor is a beautiful looking kick, and he does kick it hard and low mostly, but he is an average kick and doesnt get it enough.
we can plug away with him as 3rd tall, and he will probably do the job most weeks, but there will always be a risk he will get taken apart by a good taller player.
i like Grimes as a small, but if we are playing Morris and Hunt, we dont need to play Grimes on a small forward, so he can play '3rd tall'. Grimes is as capable as Batchelor as playing on a 3rd tall forward and I would trust him more on a 200cm forward, such as Brown this week. Batchelor can control the backline in the VFL and be ready if we have injuries or form issues. If he wants a future at AFL level he needs to learn to run and run and be more consisten with his kicking so he can play as running half back.
