Jake Batchelor

I didn't watch last Friday night, but I'm guessing North's forwards were much taller than Sydney - esp with Richards out. Which must mean either Sydney's midfield killed 'em or the tighter ground did not work for North. And did someone say that Hobart's ground is a similar size to Sydney's?

Bit harsh on Batch.. Agree he is the 4th option in a very good backline but he does give 100% and can be relied upon.
Maybe part of some kind of trade as he does have currency.

Batch makes our backline better imo. With the injuries we have back there, he stays in. So long as he doesnt play on Waite this week.

He is prepared to lay a bump and shepherd, and flies the flag when required. Lacks polish, but is a blue collar tradie in the back 6.

We desperately need this medium to be capable of providing drive and rebound.

I like Batchelor defensively. But he offers nothing at all coming the other way. He is a liability and doesn't work hard enough. The oppo can zone off and allow the ball to go to him because he always plays it safe by foot. Thought Saturday nite was the first time Grimes looked a much more attacking player and took intercept marks and BOOM, wanted to go forward.

That's what Batch must do.

batch pros

Can take a good mark, is tough, pretty good in maintaining his feet.

Cons

Short for his pace, a poor left foot kick, shocking right foot kick, lacks poise and offers nothing offensively

Would not get a game with any other team in the league, must be replaced.......asap

SYdney's mids put pressure on the North I50 ball, Luke. Sydney played with a lot of pressure all over the ground but there was a lot of heat in the middle. Sydney got a lot of clean counter going.

There were times when North just brushed aside the Swans but not like they do the us. Importantly players like Zeibell began to perceive pressure even when it had lapsed. He panicked. North mids we're well beaten.

North weren't disgraced. They fought back pretty well. Mainly when Goldstein got on top of Tippett and Sinclair in the second half. They scored efficiently at times to keep the margin down. But they did not handle the heat.

If we can't apply real midfield pressure there's not much Batchelor or anyone else can do.

Can provide some run out of the backline but is a terrible one on one defender. Gets beaten every time.

Reckon you've got that the wrong way round. He adds no run whatsoever, his kicking is ok but needs to be better but I reckon he's quite a good one on one player. The main problem is he's too small to be a tall defender and too slow to be a small defender. He's fine when playing on mid sizers that aren't overly quick but as soon as you get someone thats a bit different (ala Waite and also Betts last year when Grimes got injured) and he gets smashed one on one and when he's not giving anything going forward then he doesn't add a lot.

Reckon he's not a good matchup for anyone in the North forward line personally.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, and many will disagree.

However, Batchelor can kick. I don't think it's a skill issue, but a mental issue. He's frequently put in a position to help us switch the play. He can kick long and accurately most of the time. I think the issue is he doesn't play within his limits and tries to go for that extra hard kick, which ends up being a poor decision.

The fact he's used to be that switch kick says that the coaching staff (and playing group) have confidence in his ability to hit the target. They wouldn't put him into that position nor use him on the field if he didn't have their trust.

I think they should get him to drop about 4-5kg and get him more mobile. He showed when we first got him he could be useful and attacking. He could be that again those skills just don't disappear.

I thought his kicking skills weren't too bad on the weekend, just the one shocker where he kicked it out on the full. Looked like he was trying to play more aggressive, I hate it when backman kick backwards, slowly switch the ball or take 5 minutes to go behind their mark.

Tiges need to play more aggressively, but make the right decisions as we don't want to have multiple goals from turnovers like earlier in the year.

Looked at Dea the other night and he didn't really seem to play much of a contested game. Gets the ball and takes some intercept marks but just seems to play as a loose man. Maybe that has something to do with the way Essendrugs structure their defense. I thought they did a pretty good job down back, Tipungwuti gives them some run.

Think I prefer Batchelor over Dea even though he doesn't get as much of the ball.

Batchelor, Grigg, Chaplin, BEllis, (Houli) all cant kick with their wrong foot. How many can you carry each week?

Bellis can kick on his left...just not very well.

Theres others who don't have an opposite foot: Cellis, Vickery, Astbury, Grimes, Hampson ( he's so special he cant kick on either foot...)

Well said general
He's a great field kicker

i'm on team Batch here as well. nails it, and sometimes doesn't - mostly with those dinky smart-ass kicks - like many others at RFC and elsewhere.

Dont be so quick on Corey. Lovely left peg but I'm pretty sure I saw him hit someone up on his right on Saturday.

On Hampson maybe he is a natural southpaw and doesn't know it!
