Jake Batchelor

whatever you think of him Batch was a part of the 4th Best Defence in the league last season. a defence set up that has been tampered with - for whatever reason - Elim failure etc. at the same time RFC preach stability?

Yes our backline won us a lot of games last season, i can't understand why they would mess with our real strength.

had me scratching my head from the seasons start TM.
what Batch lacks in some skill he makes up for with intimidation tactics. he's a bit of a tough guy - something we are lacking.

because it lacked run, and playing Astbury has given Rance a bit of freedom.

im not sure our defence issues are down to the personnel back there, rather the change of game plan, more running and handballing, and the constant turnovers.

scoring against us will decrease, and we will probably start winning if/when we slow down our ball movement and lessen the turnovers.

thats right Brodders - like last year when the defence set up was working!

Apart from getting towelled because of a terrible match up against Waite in the Elim Final i thought he was pretty good last year.

Agree with this - he was part of the back six who did exceptionally well last year. Dimma seems to get an idea in his head and runs with that to prove he is right, instead of being dictated by the game. I think Batch is one of those players who plays better in the AFL than he does in the VFL.

For the doubters look into our string of losses over the last 3 years at the beginning of the seasons then look what happens when our boy jake gets a game. He is a big part of the way our defense sets up. Ill say it again. He is a better defender than all but rance in our team, he allows houli freedom, he covers grimes inability to support other players who need it because they are given the role of attacking defender like grimes reckons he is, he will free up vlastuin to play on the flank because he needs to be further away from goal, it will keep morris out and allow an opportunity for Chaplin to do his best work as an intercept defender. It frustrates me when again it has taken a *smile* start to the season for this to be highlighted. Ill now get onto our size. Batch gets screwed because he is a mid sized defender asked to play on the big backs. He is still better in this position than our other options because he understands defense. Why is it that our club cannot get size into our players? Batch would be number 3 to maric and rance in size at RFC. So rance is the only bred tiger with development. its not good enough - compare us to every other club we aren't conditioned very well. Batch gives away a bit of height but makes up for it with bulk and attitude. Not even dusty has blown the cobwebs off the weights in the gym. Give us back the Batch.

It's part of the half step back

Good post, he did a great job last season playing on guys that Chaplin should have been playing on.
He didn't stand a chance in the Elim final with our midfielders getting their pants pulled down. I'd have him in the side before Houli, and your right Flossy can go back to the flank and become the player he was last season.

Good player that cops too much *smile* considering he was part of that defence when it was at its best.
*smile* off Houli

Listed as 188 cm 87 kg. not much size or bulk at all to Batch, nor pace nor skill. Fair bit of in betweener to Batch, handy stop gap type but no real cream anywhere to his game.

And vs Sawns last year he locked down on the speedy Gary Rohan who'd dominated the first quarter and changed the game.
He's become quicker, tighter and smarter every year, needs to be given a chance again.

Should be perfect for Jack Watts, who doesn't like it tough. Belt him early (fairly) and he'll go into his shell.

Batchelor might come in now for that utility back man role - somewhere in that mix of replacements for Grimes and Astbury - and even Chaplain.
But he's never going to be an alternative to Houli even if Bachar has been a bit shaky at times lately.
Batch doesn't have the skills of Houli (and later on Yarran) to play that fast running role with (mainly accurate?) long kicks forward.

I would be bringing in Elton for Astbury. We need to know what he can do. Back him in to smash the crap out of Watts. Batch is a 3rd tall at a pinch but more of a hbf.

this is a player that would go the next level at another club.

I rate him but Richmond cannot get him going to his full potential. This is the disappointing thing.

in 2 years he will be at another club playing finals footy. You heard it from B2.
