Jack Ross

Im not arguing he was inadequate last night.

Im using a sample of 50 games

He has played two good games this year
Its constantly said, by former AFL players now spruiking in the media, that a 50 gamer or 100 gamer really belongs.

At some point we gotta wash our minds out and stop thinking what a player didnt do in 2021

And start to focus on the short term.
He was ordinary last week. Top side.
He was good against the same mob in the elim last year.
He was better last night.

I've said it before, but Lambo was playing for northern knights at Ross' age.

So he's ahead right now.

To be clear, he's nowhere near a 2017 Lambert right now. And he will have done exceptionally well to get to even 80% of what Lambo was.

But he's becoming a goal kicking, transition mid who runs both ways, defends, attacks and is clean in the contest.

His link work late in the game really reminded me of how we played from phone booth to open space so well in the glory days.
Interesting thing about 2017 Lambo is that he wasn’t selected in round 1 and wasn’t a permanent best 22 player at that stage.
He went on to have a career best year of course.
He was 25 years old

I’m not exactly first in the queue to watch Rossy play, and maybe he will never be a standout player. The question of how much of what we see today is nature vs nurture?

Our young players seemed to struggle more than most during the 20 & 21 seasons with player development. Maybe it was the break in “connection” that we so often hear about? who knows what happened in hub-lan? The young boys hardly played any competitive games? Maybe our recent midfield picks from the draft had lower bases than their cohorts? Maybe Marty Clark is a dud?

We can also talk about the things the club had control over or faced with. The positive of our success at the time meant we had a pretty strong midfield line out to break into. He missed a lot of VFL games due to being an emergency for the firsts for weeks at a time. When he did get games, it was start-stop, or they were playing him in roles that didn’t suit his game. The cap reductions and loss of McRae hurt us as well.

Maybe he is not up to it, but he has improved to a certain degree this year. Let’s see what Mini can do with him for the remainder of the season.

Good points enz'head. You mention that we had a super strong lineup. I think this applies to Miller too.
The young kids are in awe and sit back watching the stars shine. They're also told to play a role. So they get habits of waiting back, holding their position and letting the senior fellows go first.
They look hesitant and uncertain in afl games.
At some point they need to realise "stuff this, i'm going"
Ross appears to be doing that more this season

Agree - he was good,

But youde expect a 50 game bloke on a wing to be good.

Its the reverse dusty effect on here. Hes an inverse whipping boy

Dusty gets 20 and gains 400m and sell him to Dimma at GC,

Jross gets 20 and gains 400m, and hes gonna win the JD medal

I love the positivity and i hope he plays 250 games,

But i see a very ordinary footballer who doesnt stand up to heat, be it a ground ball, 1:1, or a set shot.

He doesnt have a weapon; hes not quick, hes not particularly tough, hes not great over head, hes not a great kick, hes not a big moment player.

Hes adequate at those things, sometimes.

He definately could have played a role as 23 rd man in our great sides,

But i cant see him adding much while we are ordinary.
He's better than you give him credit for. K-Mac was given plenty of latitude on that wing long before he deserved it. He was persisted with. Ross is in and out, sub, dropped. He's the new Shultz.

Realistic summation. One swallow does not make a summer.
Ross played well no doubt but he's set a benchmark now & needs to start stringing good performances together.
If he starts to do that then doubters will be won over.

Agree. He is a beautiful and accurate kick of the footy too.

He's been pretty good for most of this year - this game he was best on for us behind Shai, Dusty and Nank. High bar if you expect him to be top four every week, but it would be a good result.

Ross is one of those players that has time. Composed, aware and doesn't panic. Sweet kick of the footy and now plays with confidence.

Just waiting to hear someone say we'll never win a Premiership with players like Ross in the team to turn him into a 200 game player for the club.

I’m biased, obviously, and of course I don’t know what happens behind the scenes. But as I’ve mentioned before, I’m so impressed with his attitude and he almost deserves to make it just on that. Whenever the camera shows him as the waiting sub, he’s focussed, eager, ready for action. No sitting back mulishly, arms crossed, annoyed to be dropped to sub once again (maybe undeservedly). Hits the ground running, fighting for a spot. The epitome of resilience and the attitude that every setback is an opportunity.

Of course, he should be open to other offers (and may even be looking for them) but he seems a true Richmond Man. Roll on the “50-gamer” stage.

You need your 16-22 players to be solid to win a flag. Ross is moving himself into this category now.

I think his composure is in the top 25% of the comp and probably his most elite quality. Seems very aware of how much time and space he has / takes first options when needed and has some OK tricks to create space. (usually a dummy but we did see that crazy good blind turn too against Freo)

Honestly think he's been patchy in his performances. Maybe I'm expecting too much.

Nah, its fair. I'd say more good than bad, but occasional lapses.

On the composure, I'm starting to see leadership potential - early days but definitely something to watch going forward

I can't help but wonder whether his good attitude has worked against him being our most prolific sub. In my personal professional experience I've observed those who have a meek attitude are the first ones on the list (in this case amongst fringe players) to be taken advantage of.

The other thing is that when he has gone back to the vfl he doesn’t drop the bottom lip and sulk, he generally goes out and dominates.
