I'm a Ross fan too, but don't agree that he's been treated terribly. On the contrary, I think the time spent in the VFL, especially this year where he has been clearly a level above, has been the making of him.
If there's something I've criticised Ross for over the journey, it's been his tendency to play conservative when he gets called up to AFL level. It's what players do when they don't feel like they belong - they try to minimise mistakes rather than maximise impact. I'm not a subscriber to the idea that a guaranteed block of games in the 1's is the answer to this. Self-belief is not something that be switched on and off so quickly, it's something that builds over time through round after round of positive reinforcement.
And I reckon the time in the VFL has given Ross that opportunity to build that core of self belief. When he walks out onto the ground in the 2's, you can see in his body language that he believes that he's the best player on the park. And it translates to the way he plays - more and more he's been downright audacious in his attack on and use of the ball. Positive reinforcement. The more he does it, the more it becomes part of his DNA, the more it's part of his game when he gets called up to the seniors. It's not something he has to think about anymore, it's just the way he plays.
Is he the complete player yet? No. But he's young. And the flaws in his game are being addressed. He's starting to believe.
I've got a bit of a Lablett feeling about him.
