Jack Ross

He was dropped. Ouch. But because Bauer went off so early Ross missed no game time. Got the usual... 75TOG?

When he came on Ross was much more urgent than usual. Busy. Energetic. He did make one marking error when he went up one handed. But I thought his intensity was well up.

His numbers for CP and possession were almost exactly as usual. He's a 20 touch but only 4 CP player. On the night he was 20 touch 6 CP. (Banks had 4 CP.)

We all saw that Ross was more urgent but the CP numbers did not reflect that. Ross's get numbers were, despite an observable lift in intensity, largely unchanged.

But Ross was clearly better. What changed? His ball use results.

Ross's fans, and even some of his detractors, have noted above that Ross acquires in dangerous areas and sends the ball to dangerous areas. He sends the ball to where a good player would run. This is where he lifted. Season average 3.6 SI was outdone when Jack Ross put down 8 SI for the game.

He didn't get more dirt under his nails - he got prettier. Increased urgency led to increased polish. Who knew?

Ross is one of those players that has time. Composed, aware and doesn't panic. Sweet kick of the footy and now plays with confidence.

Just waiting to hear someone say we'll never win a Premiership with players like Ross in the team to turn him into a 200 game player for the club.
Yup. Some blokes are misunderstood. Especially blokes who have an "easy" style. Bowden was often mischaracterised as lazy or uninterested. He just had a very laid back style. He was a gun footballer, but he looked like he'd rather be somewhere else sometimes. Looks can be deceiving. Ross has looked like he had time and space since his 1st match. It's the 1st thing I noticed about him, he's unflappable. I reckon that confuses some people, but that's a fantastic asset to have if you can combine it with good skills (he does) and ability to read the play (he's not Cotch, but he's no slouch either). His extra run to get into goal scoring positions from that wing was a string we didn't know he had to his bow. That's using your noodle and hurting the opposition with run. It's what Miller should be doing more of, not off a wing obviously, but stretching the opposition backs. Running to good spots and dragging a defender with you....but I digress. I've no idea if Ross will make it. I think he could. And he's a good build to surprise in a final with some body hurt as well. That's something we haven't seen from him.

There's contested possessions and contested possessions.

Ross often received a handball under high pressure, next to a bad guy with an arm around his waist. Uncontested? Yeah. But he had to fight for it.

It would be interesting for him to keep dipping his toe in the midfield. Can he win first possession? Can he do that and maintain his composure?

I think it's possible.

Just remember he is only 22 so many years ahead of him.
Turns 23 in Sept this year I believe.
I repeat again, he is a beautiful kick of the footy.

Really starting to show he has a future with us. Does a lot of the hard lifting uses the ball well more often than not and a good kick as ell. A big improvement from the start of the season

Dilemma. Playing really good footy, but keeping Marlion off his wing.

Can we shuffle magnets so Ross plays handy somewhere else?

15 touches. 4SI. 4CP. Hit a ground ball real hard.

Started brightly with classy use then went quiet. May have got attention. May have tightened up. Anybody get to the game?

Thought he did lot of good things , one of his cleaner more composed games , obviously we’d like him finding more of the footy , however we’ve won Premierships without our wingman winning heaps of the ball , I’m still not convinced, however his doing His role

Pickett is too valuable at this moment in the forward line. He completes and brings the ball down. If we do play Pickett on the wing, then another tall must come in, otherwise we will get overmarked.

Played his role really well yesterday I thought. Mini coached well to negate Barrass & McGovern.
