Game Day Round 5 vs Crows

There’s a reason this sticks in the craw.

Work rate.

Personnel won’t change that.

The trouble of relying on pure stats to signify a good game is far too many touches are cheap and not to our advantage so it misleads us
Thats what the media writers do. Just look up the top 5 or 6 Dream team points for each side and put em in as bests.

Unfortunately we got rid of Butler and Higgins, should of kept them and got rid of George and Aarts.
Higgins yes. Butler has done nothing in the last 2 years. I am not a fan of Castagna but I am comfortable he outperformed Butler in 2021.

I want to agree with this but can’t. There was a glaring lack of defensive running and positioning that has undone us all year. It’s horrible watching players amble up the field and let the opposition own the corridor and an open 50. Our mids were getting it done at the coal face today but the support running wasn’t there and it was graham, Edwards, picket players who have always been reliable who set the tone for Hugo and Dow who were terrible. I really don’t want aaarts, Parker or George on the ground ever again. Ross was pretty effective I thought. He’s not the ideal starting winger but no where near as bad as people rant on about.
That's it. What really has bothered me all year is how quickly the opposition has been able to score at times. As you say we can't defend the corridor. We're far too slow. Cotch played a great game today but he gets caught out big time by his opponent on the spread. That's not going to change, he, and some others, simply cannot physically keep up.

Can’t win when so many players go missing, ball use is just awful & pressure on opposition (including sticking tackles is non existent).

Midfield is just a joke. Can’t tell me there’s not room for Sonsie & Stack in this team. We have no class or speed or size.
Sonsie and Stack add no size. It's down to the midget recruiting policy which I have criticised for years. Despite a glaring need for effective, skilled, big-bodied mids to replace our ageing stars, we picked up 2 skinny HBFs and a skinny SF (who will possibly become players in 3-5 years, but not enough of what was the obvious priority). Gibcus and Sonsie look like good picks but the former the only tall, and even he is very light at this stage.

Hence the call for Balta to be tried as a ruck rover. If Ross is to continue at AFL level, I’d try him in the square too.

Agree we lack big bodied midfielders but aside from RCD (who I’ve written off), this can only be addressed in off season.

Agree with all that really. I think Balta gives us drive wherever he goes but might be greatest impact on ball. Agree on Ross and RCD too unfortunately. Problem is Graham and Ross too similar as mids; lack of burst speed or penetrating kicks.

My comments on our drafting is that we have lacked realism for the last few years and have failed to pick the winners (as in player type) needed to prevent a decline.

Ha! Just joking. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
We’ll be wiped off the park by half time.
Our only chance would be:
- Martin making a comeback;
- Two rucks;
- Balta playing as big bodied mid or key back;
- Lambert playing;
- Stack & Sonsie playing;
- Parker, Aarts, Ross, Miller & Dow not playing;
- Halving clearance;
- Getting 50/50 umpiring;
- Lynch moving all night;
- Jack to play solely from Goal Square

Agree - we’ve picked flankers/boutique type players. While all may be good, we’ve deferred addressing the midfield for an additional year.

Too much faith in the oldies for one last roll of the dice (looks a fail) & too much faith in younger midfielders on the list (even bigger fail imo - RCD - seemed to live in hope he could actually develop a tank and/or speed for example).

Let's keep in mind, we have won 4 games from out last 16 games played.

We had our chances, it was our forward entries that cost us the game.

We got back into when we looked for the best option instead of bombing it deep to Jack, Lynch and Balta.

George got a couple of good goals, but he and Parker butchering the ball in our forward line was a real momentum killer.
