Re: Cricket

Pakistan lead by 137 with 9 wickets in hand at stumps on day four. A draw looks the most likely outcome, with the sides level at 0-0 ahead of the Third Test at Karachi which starts on Sunday.

Are you blokes jumping off Hopes already?I reckon he's worth persisting with.Agreed he was bloody ordinary bowling against Jayasuria the other night but apart from that I reckon he's been reasonablty tight.

Seems we all agree early signs of Dorey aren't good.
Hope's batting has been good but his bowling is the major concern thus he may be worth persisting with.

If the selectors have the world cup in mind then surely someone like a Cameron White should be given a go and with the return of Warne you can have something like this:
Gilly
Langer/Hayden
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Symonds
White
Warne
Lee
3rd quick
Mcgrath

Cant understand for the life of me why either Langer or Hayden are not playing. You have 3 quicks and Warne and White & Symonds to share the 5th bowler,s spot with maybe a Clarke if things are not going well with the other 2.
The big bonus is Cameron Whites batting.Coming in at no7 would take alot of pressure of the top order.
Anyway thats how id select the side for the World cup.

Quite right skip. Can never understand the banishment so early from the one day game of Langer and to a lesser degree Hayden. Reminds me of a couple of years ago when we missed the final by frigging around with the team.

Really, how much rest does a cricketer need. I hope we do miss the finals.

And on the rotation policy, when do we actually stop it and start picking the best team. I would have thought the best should be playing together as much as possible for as long as possible.. Are we going to rotate in the early rounds of the World Cup in preparation for the final?

Agree with Evo too, too early to condemn Hopes. Jayasuriya has spanked the best of them.

Re: Cricket

you mentioned earlier about dorey being young Evo..............he's actually 28.

When Leysy was playing cricket in Perth around 4 years ago, Dorey couldnt even get a game with his grade team..........hes obviously improved but doesnt change his pace nor length near enough for the one day game...hard hitters of the ball love it coming onto the bat the same pace every ball.

White is not the answer or any answer in Leysys opinion either.

His bowling IS NOT up to any standard of international cricket at the moment & he has a fair way to go in that aspect as well IMO.........though he does have time on his side to improve this.

& when are Australia gunna stop with thsi experimenting of putting Symonds up the order as at Telstra the other friday..........the guy clearly bats far better when able to come in late doors with no pressure &do some damage.......its plainly obvious he tries to build an innings when up the order & his technique just isnt up to that type of game

Geez you should have hung in their leysy. With the rotation policy you would have been a chance this summer.

Re: Cricket

we've got too many all rounders and not enough specialists.  I think we need at least 4 specialist bowlers.  A bonus if like Lee and Warne they can bat a bit.
An attack of  Dorey, Bracken, Lee, Hopes, Symonds looks real thin compared with what we could have with Lee, McGrath, Bracken, Warne, Symonds?  And their batting is just as good.
So I would run with
Jaques
Gilly
Punter
Hodge
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey
Lee
Warne
Bracken
McGrath
super-sub Hogg/Hopes

Re: Cricket

imo mcgrath is gone hes dropped 2 yds of pace and doesnt look like taking wickets unless he gets a wicket thats doing a fair bit and even then hes struggling.gillespie has not been replaced we are screaming out for a bowler with genuine pace not just for now but the near future, take lee out of the team and the kindest word i can find for the attack is pedestrian.dorey bracken clarke are all poor mans versions of mcgrath and not as good even if glen is past it thay are not the answer.i also believe gilchrist has gone as well its been so long since hes played an important innings of note it not funny, for guys like gilly when you get a bit old, and the eyes go a bit, and the technique is not the greatest well it catches up with ya.
finally whats happend to gilly happens to everyone and cricket in australia is heading for a big fall.young people are leaving the game in droves and concentrating on sports where they might reach the top while they are still young atm it seems if your not 30 something you cant get a prper go at the elite level.

Re: Cricket

I agree young people are leaving the game in droves. Cricket more often than not, currently comes across as a slow, often uncompetitive, often unresolved, boring game played by old men. I seriously doubt the Mickey Mouse 20/20 will save it. The invention of this garbage shows that administrators see the writing on the wall.

I wonder how long before Ch9 stops showing test matches on free to air now that Kerry's gone? Won't be long in my opinion. Aside from the Ashes series, one can't help but feel the game is on the slide. I say 5 years max.

Re: Cricket

Second Test, Faisalabad
Pakistan 588 and 490
India 603 and 21/0
Match drawn.

Just 34 wickets in the two Tests thus far. As Cricinfo says, a much-anticipated series has instead become a turgid, terrible advertisement for Test cricket. The fault for this lies squarely in the pitches that have been prepared which offer no assistance to any bowler, pace or spin. Both teams know they can never bowl the other mob out twice and so settle for pursuing individual records and hitting sixes.

All eyes will be on the pitch at Karachi on Sunday to see if it allows either side to escape with the bragging rights.

South Africa beat Sri Lanka to keep competition very close.Still bewildered by the decision to persist with Kattich ahead of Jacques.Hopes can bat but can't bowl & Dorey's a dud leaving us with a very thin bowling attack.
Couldn't agree with you more Mb....

Jacques makes yet another "loud" statement to the somewhat idiotic Aussie selection panel, who don't seem to see the same things we see - which is the flipping obvious - with his fourth ING century this season for NSW, beating Tasmania today in Hobart.

He became the first player to score four centuries in one season of the competition, he is the top run scorer for the comp with 658 with an average over 100, and at 26 years old you would think he would at least be in their calculations for the World Cup next year.

But who the hell knows given the fact that on form he should actually be in the team now.
I wonder what our illustrious openers will score in the ODI in Adelaide ::) ??!!

The Jaques decision becomes more baffling by the hour. They rotate the players to find some alternatives leading up to the World Cup and when they find a gem, the discard him on the pretence that he was only filling in for katich while he was injured - a player that has barely made a run in countless opportunties since they earmarked him from such a young age. So why rotate at all. Hodge can forget about the World Cup as he is clearly filling in only for Ponting while he has a much required rest. :p

The selectors (see Hohns) are a stubborn bunch so don't expect them to change. More baffling decisisions will follow.

Re: Cricket

One of my mates has gone to Adelaide for the day to watch the game

I'll be asleep, but let me know if you see a sign with "Up Yours Carrum Downs Night Fill" :hihi

Or similar

Re: Cricket

Is it just me or is the concept of the Supersub heavily unfair - it favours the team that bats first as they can just replace a batsman (who will never bowl and is an average fielder) with a full time bowler. The team that bowls first can't replace a batsmen (as they need them all) and will only replace a bowler if one gets carted. A good example being last nights game. S Clark was the Aussies Supersub but didn't get a look in, the Sri Lankans were able to replace a batter with a leg spinner Bandara and hence have more options in attack.

The whole idea seems fairly stupid to me.

Sorry Claw, you do make sense sometimes on this site mate....but Geez

The highlighted above has been logged by Leysy AS THE SINGLE STUPIDEST call ever made on this site.

He is still in the top 3 fast bowlers in the world my boy...pace is not an issue for McGrath, he has NEVER been quick.

Bookmark Leysy as saying that he will be in the top 3 leading wicket takers for fast bowlers in the next 2 years......

apart from the lords test where the slope is taylor made for him hes hardly taken a wicket from then to now. hes struggled to bowl over 130kmh barely medium pace in that time as well.the fact is unless hes getting a deck thats helping him he doesnt look like it.
also let it be known that i was the first to predict mcgraths demise and if glen had any brains he would retire now while most people still think hes on top of his game.

:hihi :hihi :hihi Claw, Claw, Claw - McGrath may not of got too many wickets but he is still one of our best bowlers maybe behind Lee. But still consistently beats the bat of top order batsman from around the world. He is still economic and very viable in the immediate future of the Australian Cricket team. So you want him to retire now hey and with your comments on the other bowlers in our team you would leave it up to them to guide the aussies through to the world cup hey.... C'mon mate get with the real world - there is daylight between McGrath, Lee and the rest. Maybe Hogg and McGill as spinners but as for our medium pacers (except for McGrath) as far as im concerned that is where we are lacking by a long way and where we need to improve.

Re: Cricket

Not too worried bout the great McGrath debate for now but i just wanna know why Katich - who is a dud is still in any form of the Aussie cricket side especially with selectors crapping on bout how they want a team for the future

Jaques, North, Rogers, Birt and the fella from SA ive forgot his name for the time being are all better off getting a run than Katich who is certainly not in our best options for opening the one day side surely, not to mention one M Hussey.
