man, i used to love watching the Cricket.

England winning the Ashes put something back into it for me but now were back to a one horse race again, lets see now...Australia beat South Africa....AGAIN....

Boring and predictable. Even if it was a comeback from behind. We've seen our boys do it so many times over the last decade or so.

I so wish someone else would stand up and be counted, this is getting ridiculous now  :sleeping

So typical of that arrogant Aussie "we're just so good" attitude. Any wonder the international media hate us. SA are rebuilding and Smith's declaration was a make-or-break move that he had to go for. SA won more sessions of that test than we did and the 2-0 scoreline flattered us.

Anyway, blx. I am sure you'll get your wish when McGrath and Warne retire. Our bowlers will be like pea-shooters then and even Ponting's heroics won't be enough. We will very quickly be back with the pack.

People underestimate the impact of having two of the greatest bowlers of all time in the side at the same time. Not only that, they are different bowlers so it even makes it tough for an opposition to tailor a pitch against us.

What's boring about watching greatness? I don't get it. It's like reverse snob-ism or something.

(I'm not sure many people who know the sport underestimate that 23.21. They have been immense.)

That's right. Unfortunately the precident has been set.
The difference this time may be that they have called him early. Murali was allowed to go on for far too long before Daryl Haire had the balls to call the little chucker.

blx, Australia really only won one day out of this test. Let's face it, if Smith hadn't called the declaration, we looked like *smile* against them in this test. Smith showed some big brass ones to call the declaration so early & paid the penalty for it. Unlike Ponting waiting for Hodge to get to 200 in the Perth test, Smith made a game of it. Australia is not that far ahead of the decent test teams in the world

Then on your logic we should have won in Perth and still had a comfortable 2-0 win.

I wouldn't underestimate the win in Sydney either. Agree Smith made a very charitable declaration but plenty of records were broken in the chase. It still took some doing and Ponting and Hayden batted brilliantly.

I expect us to do well in South Africa. They are a good side but they still have a bit of development to come.

i'm more thinking that the Proteas will take a hell of of alot outta these games and dont be surprised if we come back from overseas empty handed...

well its because i've paid many a time to go to the cricket over the years to watch a good game of cricket yet you almost always end up getting a walkover which is very dissapointing if you really want to just see a good game.

sure the records were and are incredible but jeese, im abit over it. I'd rather the windies come here and tear the heart outta us for a few years and do abit of their own intimidating. it used to be (apart from going to watch the aussies play) you'd go to the cricket just to watch the carribean carnival tear us apart, man they were something else.

i barrack for the blues in the NRL state of origin but its really boring now that we win all the time. Its so much better when those unsightly queenslanders win because to them its the underdog comes good, but for us its just a given. but because we win alot the sting of the series is lost a little.

Its great that the wallabies are on par with the all blacks and the springboks now, unlike the pre 90's era of floggings, because now that the all blacks and the springboks aint so dominant it makes for a fascinating tri-series year in year out. unlike the annual one sided, one day cricket series you see now between us and two other helpless nobodies who happen to be touring around that time of year.

sorry that this has now taken on a winge of some magnitude but its just years and years of the same results at the cricket, hence i havent been to a match this year, not that thats gonna bother anyone else, but im just .... well you know  :help

have fun at the cricket next you go, and lemme give you hint ... back australia to win  ;D

I see your point. I guess I like to enjoy our dominance as I know nothing lasts forever and I really feel the pain when we lose (living over here for The Ashes was great but it had its downsides!)

You might be right about the Proteas taking a lot out of the series. Seems to me though that there was only one test we struggled in over the course of the game and we ended up winning it!

Re: Cricket

2-0 series win more competitive than the result suggests as we were outplayed in Sydney bar the last day & couldn't bowl out the opposition in the 4th innings in Perth with 130+ overs available (nor did we bowl them out either innings at the SCG either)..... Return matches in Sth Africa next month will be testy,on & off the field . The garbage that Nel & co copped here will be kindergarten stuff compared to some of the behaviour that mey be endured there , if earlier tours & Super12/14 Rugby Union is any guide...

I'm with you TGN. I enjoy watching the great sides play, first the Windies now us.
I'm also over the constant bagging and criticism the boys get over sledging, over appealing, over the top celebrating wickets, agressiveness etc. One would think the Aussies are the only team to commit these so called sins. ::)

Re: Cricket

I think the gap between Australia and the best of the rest is closing. The results in these matches now swing heavily on who bats first.

Most of the tests between England and Australia and South Africa and Australia were controlled if not dominated by the team that batted first.

Australia v England
1  Australia batted first and won
2  England batted first and won  (after Ponting notoriously sent them in)
3  England batted first and Australian salvaged a draw with one wicket in hand
4  England batted first and won
5  England batted first and ground the game into the dirt.

Australia v West Indies
1  Australia batted first and won easily
2  West Indies batted first and Australia won easily
3  West Indies batted first and Australia won in a more competitive match

Australia v SA
1  Australia batted first, game ended in a draw with South Africa never a chance
2  Australia batted first and won
3  South Africa batted frist and dominated the game with Australia winning courtesy of a very generous declaration

Re: Cricket

it irks me when the aussie team over appeal, play really aggresively, etc, because if another country does it against australia we're the first to start whinging about them. otherwise i dont care all that much

Re: Cricket

Went to 20/20 match at St Kilda today, first time been to one.
Pretty decent crowd there maybe 5000. Crowd were allowed to sit inside the fence which added to atmosphere.

SA were bowled out for 113 in 20th over. Lehmann was run out for 1 (had a brain freeze attempting to run with a single to short mid wicket) Cosgrove 9 so the big hitters were ordinary. Harwood 3 wickets and was on a hat trick, Moss, McDonald and White in amongst it as well. Great stumping by Crossthwaite too off a wide was good to watch.

Victoria got the runs in 13th over. with Moss 37NO Hodge 27 Buchanan 25 and White 15NO !!
Tait first over had five wides and Hodge then hit 4 4's in 2nd over.
Few sixes hit as reward of $50 for a catch in crowd, as match finished earlier the Vics boy hit some balss into the crowd.

Junction Oval only had 1 beer stand, 1coke stand and 1 food stand and struggled with the crowd but still was great day and now probably big chance to host the final on 21st.

Re: Cricket

Just my thoughts re international cricket, I love my cricket and want it to be competitive but I want to see the best cricketers at their best and I want to see Aussies win (especially against England next year).

It was good to see the Windies stick it up the Aussies and seeing Viv bat etc but the matches were not even close so it was not much different to today.

I have been fortunate to see Australia do well at the boxing day test and have seen some fantastic centuries and innings by the Aussies like Ponting, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Border, Langer, Hayden and Martyn and these have champion bats and it was great to see them at their peak and even though I like Aussies winning I have also been lucky to appreciate to see some great innings live from Tendulakar, Sehwag, Vaughan, Viv and some fantastic bowling from Ambrose, Patterson and Akram.

I also have no problem with the way the Aussies appeal or celebrate and oppostition teams are just using this as a cover up for their own inadequancies.
McGrath being fined were swearing and the ICC clamping on pre game bantership shows how soft the ICC are in tackling the big issues, they have reduced the the degree in throwing as the matter just got too hard for them, Zimbabbwe is a problem they wil not touch and their umpring panel is too small and umpires are over worked at this team of year when there is so much cricket being played at various times during our spring and summer in all countries except England. Instead the ICC is looking at smaller things that do not matter on the smaller scale.

Have you got an example of us being the "first to start complaining"?

Good post. The ICC are a joke.

Re: Cricket

it's called a figure of speach.

maybe i should have said, that the australian cricket team complain about things which they themselves do, such as over appealing...

But they are currently the worst in the world at it, as bad as India used to be. There is no need to run from second slip three-quarters of the distance to the officiating umpire and to then kick the ground and sulk when the decision isn't given.

The Australians really do make a song and dance when things don't go their way. Exhibit A: the Ponting and Katich incidents at Trent Bridge.

May be - I'm just not sure that when it's all added up we are that much worse than others. All teams have their tactics, Pakistan have a guy trying to scuff up the pitch, England flaunt the substitute laws. . .

For mine, Australia's behaviour over the last few years has been excellent although they have admittedly gone further than I'd like this summer. The team always seems to get a lot of criticism that feels a bit tall poppy-ish to me.

Re: Cricket

Looking forward to tonight's 20/20 game. This form of cricket seems to be getting the thumbs up judging by the crowd numbers.May eventualy replace 50 over games that have become quite boring in the middle overs.

Re: Cricket

I'm not a big fan of it personally mb.Each to his own I guess.

Re: Cricket

After yesterday I can no longer go to the cricket unless I can hear Groove Armada and Pussycat Dolls as background music.
I also think there should be a dance floor where you can dance and watch the cricket, perhaps where the Northern Stand meets the Southern stands
