I don't like Smith, but I have to congratulate him for making the decision to make a game of this. Most un-South African like. Hope they play like this in the return series over there.
Still makes no sense why he wouldn't at least make an extra 13 runs  just to make the overall target 300. Psychologically a tougher target. As we look at it now, they would have made this easily too, but it would have played more on the players' minds to chase 300.
Agree Zips,The target seemed a little generous 300+ would have been better but I give Smith credit for making a game of it.Despite winning this test we have been outplayed for the majority of the test.

Punter I dip my lid. :D

Well done Ponting ! Not shabby to score a century in each innings & the 1st player since Dougie 37 years ago to do so @ the SCG . Also the 1st to do so in their 100th Test.

Occasionally questioned his captaincy but no doubting his class & ticker . No argument with his #1 batting ranking . Hope he sees the target through to the end .

Re: Cricket

too right we have.  The weather has saved Australia's arse in this test.  I do applaud Smith making a game of it, but he should still have gone for the mental figure of 300+.  It's not like the pitch has seen 5 straight days of hot sunshine, nor do they have a decent spinner in the side.  Brave but poor captaincy on Smith's behalf

Re: Cricket

Agree another 10-15 minutes batting to make the target 300+ wouldn't have hurt but maybe Smith thought the Aussies would view that as excessive & not take chances they otherwise would . Perhaps figured SA could buy a few wickets similar to the 1st innings where we were
3-53 & 7-226.... 287 in 76 overs is equivalent to Australia's 1st innings run rate making 359 in 95 , 3.78 runs/over , pretty decent anytime....

Locals home by 8 wickets....Well done but we need a 3rd paceman....

Re: Cricket

Despite the early finish channel 9 in their wisdom have decided to end the coverage without any of the presentations & post match interviews.Instead we get a repeat episode of Cheers. 9 are a joke.

Re: Cricket

I reckon Smith would be feeling like a real tool right now. Not only did he fail to make one single decent score, but he failed to make the moves to follow up his good declaration. He persisted with his pie-chucking spinners in the late stages of the innings, when Nel was clearly as fresh as a daisy, judging by his fielding. He just had a little loser's limp. If he used his pace bowlers, he might've had a chance of dragging the overs out long enough to get to the thunderstorm and save a draw.

PS, Botha is a chucker. One second his arm is bent, the next it's straight.

If anything Smith should be commended for making a game of it.None of his bowlers did the job so in the end it didn't really matter who he bowled.Ponting is in red hot form so he was critical for the run chase.

All presentations and interviews and extra interviews were on ABC radio.
Ponting MoM and Player of Series.

You're right, mb. We should thank him for his lack of resilience.

Match is still in the melting point but when did Australia (or any test team) last win without bowling out the opposition at least once in the game....

Well I wondered about this too ... and it seems the answer is there on Cricinfo. If you believe this link:-
http://www.cricinfo.com/db/STATS/TESTS/RESULTS/VICTORY_AFTER_DECLARATION.html

then this is only the 11th instance of a team successfully chasing a third-innings declaration in the entire history of Test Cricket. Does that sound right?

Anyway, it also indicates this is only the third time ever that a team has won without dismissing the opposition once. The other two were quite infamous Tests in the history of the game. The England win over West Indies at Port of Spain in 1967/68 was that game where Garry Sobers got bored and gave England the match with a very generous declaration and was castigated all over the Carribbean. Then there was the "forfeit" match between England and South Africa at Centurion in 1999/2000 (Good on ya, Hansie!). Seems that game is also the only Test ever to go to a result with none of the four innings being completed.

I just saw my first video of Botha bowling. Looks like someone has been watching Murali and decided if the authorities aren't going to stop throwing you may as well exploit it.

Ridiculous.

He did look a bit chucky TGN!!!

He looks a lot chucky Queenie!

Turns out we are not the only ones who have this opinion:-

Botha reported for throwing
January 6, 2006

SOUTH Africa off spinner Johan Botha has been reported by the game's world governing body the ICC for throwing, a South Africa team official announced tonight after the third Test against Australia at the SCG.

The right-arm off spinner has a controversial action and bowls the doosra, which spins from leg-side to off-side for a right-handed batsman.

Botha, 23, took 1-26 and 1-77 in his debut Test match, which Australia won by eight wickets today.

Further details of Botha's reporting are yet to be released by the ICC.

The South Africa team was also fined today for a slow over-rate.

Thank his bowlers Curtis.

Re: Cricket

man, i used to love watching the Cricket.

England winning the Ashes put something back into it for me but now were back to a one horse race again, lets see now...Australia beat South Africa....AGAIN....

Boring and predictable. Even if it was a comeback from behind. We've seen our boys do it so many times over the last decade or so.

I so wish someone else would stand up and be counted, this is getting ridiculous now  :sleeping

Thank God for that.

Now the test is what will they do about it. They may just flog him with a warm piece of lettuce like they did Murali.

That's right. Unfortunately the precident has been set.

Exactly, the 15 degrees was set because Murali tested 14.9 at UWA. Its impossible to bowl a Doosra with anything resembling a straight arm.

So typical of that arrogant Aussie "we're just so good" attitude. Any wonder the international media hate us. SA are rebuilding and Smith's declaration was a make-or-break move that he had to go for. SA won more sessions of that test than we did and the 2-0 scoreline flattered us.

Anyway, blx. I am sure you'll get your wish when McGrath and Warne retire. Our bowlers will be like pea-shooters then and even Ponting's heroics won't be enough. We will very quickly be back with the pack.

People underestimate the impact of having two of the greatest bowlers of all time in the side at the same time. Not only that, they are different bowlers so it even makes it tough for an opposition to tailor a pitch against us.
