Re: Cricket

Umpiring errors will always happen but when they think they're centre of attention, above criticism & not in tune with the mood & tempo of the game, notably Billy Bowden & a couple of others, frustrations boil over among the players + crowd. Hopefully match referee Broad will carry some detailed observations on the standard of officiating in his report rather than concentrate on player behaviour....Can umpires be dropped from the 'elite panel' rather than be shuffled to a Test elsewhere ?

South Africa have set the game up with their declaration , 287 to get in 76 overs . Let's hope the rain holds off..

Re: Cricket

If we don't lose early wickets we could be some chance.Langer & Smith already have exchanged words so should be a fiery afternoon.

As in AFL umpires should be a protected species in Cricket. There are two things cricketers do that have really crept in over the years that really irk me. One is the manhandling of umpires by bowlers and captains and the other is asking for an explanation for a decision eg LBW. In AFL either of these incidents will earn you a report or a 50m penalty. Umpiring is not an easy job(it's easy from the loungechair with the benefits of modern technology). The players need to show respect to whoevers been selected to adjudicate that test and accept any decision they make regardless of their thoughts.
I'm not suggesting the umpires performance shouldn't be evaluated but it should be observed after the game has finished, not during it.

Re: Cricket

Langer gone cheaply again as Ponting comes to the crease. For Aust to have any chance you would think Ponting will need another big innings.

Re: Cricket

Excellent declaration by Smith. Run rate will be just under 4 an over.

Australia have gotta go for it.

Re: Cricket

Runs coming very freely at the moment.Just over 200 needed at less than 4 an over.Shaping up as an entertaining afternoon of cricket.

Re: Cricket

Match is still in the melting point but when did Australia (or any test team) last win without bowling out the opposition at least once in the game....

Chance exists for Symonds to spread egg on my face in the chase but not sold on him,& much less Watson, however honest their efforts. Selectors should scrap the search for a Flintoff clone though Lee's showing promise as a bowling allrounder ....A  good 3rd paceman / 1st change bowler (left hand preferred) is really what's needed to give the bowling variety & depth. Show faith in the 1st 5 batsmen & use Gilchrist @ #6.

Re: Cricket

24th over ..1/107 , well up with the required run rate...Hope they don't 'drown in honey'. Agree with elevating Symonds to next drop if the next wicket falls @ 150+ (assuming run rate is maintained),otherwise keep as is. Still 52 overs to bowl & the spinner is now introduced . 'Game within a game'....

I'd go for Symonds next.
Ok lets compromise. If ponting goes out next bring in Symonds
If Hayden goes bring in Gilly ;D
Nice compromise Skipper.
Or should we go the most logical and safe way :
Ponting>>>Mcgrath
Hayden>>>Hussey
:hihi :hihi :hihi

No skipper,we've seen Ponting bring McGrath up the order once too many times.

Re: Cricket

This innings chase is turning into cakewalk.Less than 140 needed with still another session & 9 wickets in hand.

Re: Cricket

I don't like Smith, but I have to congratulate him for making the decision to make a game of this. Most un-South African like. Hope they play like this in the return series over there.

Re: Cricket

They are home, the Aussies are doing it on the bit.

Punter is destroying them, best cross bat player in the world.

Seeing it like a watermelon.

Still makes no sense why he wouldn't at least make an extra 13 runs  just to make the overall target 300. Psychologically a tougher target. As we look at it now, they would have made this easily too, but it would have played more on the players' minds to chase 300.
