Cricket

Financial penalties don't work. The only way to improve over rates is to suspend the captain or a runs penalty. Prefer the first.

The thought occurred to me yesterday they could Play a longer day but have more substitute fielders and allow bowlers to have meaningful longer breaks off the field eg an hour.

And possibly use a pink ball after say 6pm. Anyway, just a couple of thoughts.
A. *smile* no. England's fast bowlers already go off for a full body massage after every spell.
B. You can't change the ball mid-innings, posh's idea is better.

Cricket needs to wake up to itself. Play through light drizzle like we've just seen. Treat the paying public with something better than contempt.

Need to stop going off for anything but decent rain. Always been the same, go off for a few drops when they don't need to.

Stay on, let a bit of juice get on the wicket and liven it up, luck of the draw.
Agree. Soft as.... Just play the bloody game in the wet. At least it gets more interesting.

I don't understand why Leach is selected. If you just want to bowl a few overs of spin as you get close to the new ball, then Malan and Root can do that and then pick either another quick or another batsman. Leach just adds nothing. If they want him to take wickets then actually get him to bowl attacking, if he doesn't want to do it, then don't pick him and pick Dom Bess and let him have a crack.

Hope Uzzie gets runs, classy player who's been harshly treated over time.
I remember him getting a half century in South Africa in one of his early test games, it was against Steyn and Morkel and Co. He showed that he was a test player, and agree, has been harshly treated.

Agree with you on Leach, Root is a better spin bowler than Leach.

Yeah, the selections in this series by the Poms has been odd to say the least.

England waving the flag of St George minus the red cross with these fields and tactics.

Leach finally strays off the leg side line (I suspect by accident, reckon he got the line wrong) and almost took a wicket. Straight tactics not to look for that line more often.

Fox showing that delivery was in the green box that Warney was talking about an hour or so ago. Finally put 1 in that area that he was talking about and nearly took a wicket. Funny that.

I always find it useful in these sort of discussions to find out what the laws/rules actually say before entering pub bullshitting mode (but invariably ignore my own advice!).
So,

Sections 2.7 and 2.8 deal with playing conditions/rain etc.
2.7.1 explicitly states that just having a wet surface or ball isn't enough to come off. The other clauses refer to dangerous or unreasonable condition which surely don't apply for short periods of light rain.

2.8 deals with suspension and resumption of play. Again, there's nothing there that prevents resumption if there's very light rain and the ground conditions are ok. This whole thing about rain having to have completely stopped is nonsense and is an invention that seems to have stuck.

The rules are there to deal with this. They just need to be applied correctly. I blame SHocking.

A number of us are going to need an equally detailed dissection of what happened to Reite Den yesterday. Nobet Pays had $10k on it.

It was a good price when they started, 10 to 1, it was still running at half past one;)

Only joking Royce:)

He'll probably get out next ball, but Khawaja is, and always has been a lot more comfortable against pace bowling.

Broad getting up to near the 140 kph mark, why can't he bowl that pace all the time instead of low 130's.
