Brandon Ellis

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Personally one of my favourites already. Absolute ripper of a kid who's just a very smart footballer with neat skills and a bit of grit. Great pick from the compromised drafts.

Very well said. He is a composed footballer.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

He is a ripper and I reckon he is better than 3/4 of the blokes drafted before him. His ball use and overhead marking a real feature and at pick 15 a gem.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Love his run, speed and composure. Already ahead of the previous years first rounder in Conca imo

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Ellis has adjusted more to the pressure in the backline this pre-season. He moves the ball out of our defensive 50 beautifully. The hard work Ellis put in pre-season will pay off big time.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Smokey for top 5 finish for the Jack Dyer.

Absolute Mr. Consistency in everything he does. Neat, courageous, creative.

What a bloody good pick at 15.

We won't have had much of a year if he is. (this year)

In total agreeance here.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Now he's being played in his proper position full time (HB flanker) he will shine even more. Was more than servicable in his stints through the midfield last season and despite many putting him in their future midfield lists I've never thought he's a midfielder. Already seen his strong overhead marking come to fruition in the NAB Cup. Maybe a lesson for the coach there.

You've lost me. Whats the lesson for the coach? He was more than serviceable as a midfielder, in his very first year, but he's not a midfielder?

He's a better talent than "more than serviceable". If he played HB all season I believe he would've had an even better year. Was drafted playing off a flank and already looks a million bucks coming off a flank in the NAB.

I remember Hardwick tried to use Grigg off HB for a season when he first arrived when it was obvious to most he was winger/midfielder and he kept getting exposed in 1 on 1 contests up back. Took him a long, long time to realise that. He's stated he has no idea where to develop Astbury which is a worry. I wouldn't say setting players in their best positions is his strength as a coach.

still don't really follow. Maybe Dimmas logic was to get some steel into Grigg before releasing him to the wing, which is sound, and could be argued has worked. There wouldn't be many players, any players let alone outside top 10 draft, who had as good a year as Ellis in their first year.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

In my obs, Ellis is not bad at shin height but can improve. But is not a lawn height player. On what he's shown as a teenager this pre-season his pack-front marking skills are behind his ability IMO. A youngster's lack of confidence.

His hands and feet keep getting better. 2YB is about (what does my uncle say?) reading the newspapers. If Brandon goes on this year he may get dangerous.

On what I've seen Ellis may pass Conca and Martin.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

if i am not mistaken Rosy was a big fan of Ellis BEFORE we drafted him..... good pick Rosy :clap

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Dyer watch his head, before he gets the ball. Head is on a swivel. Before the ball hits his hands, he knows. The true greats like Chimp, don't need to look, they know.

That's the difference between the elite and the really good. But I could not be happier with the kid. Big improver this year.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

doing well this preseason. strengths are his kicking and tank. bit slowish and could be harder at the contest. should improve these areas with time.

He'll be a midfielder, I'm pretty confident of that. Has the attributes to become a solid midfielder. Yes a tad slow butmaybe but many quality midfielders aren't super quick.

Rarely do elite endurance and top end speed go hand in hand. Brandon won the club time trial this year in his second pre season, I think he was third last year. When the siren goes to bounce the ball there may be a few faster, but watch them drop off and see who is still running in time on of the last quarter. With subs and capped rotations speed is going to become less important and endurance will be the key attribute for players.

Those that aren't superquick have elite agility or have above average pace and strength in the first three steps, Ellis hasn't quite demonstrated that yet. For mine, he'll need to develop these skills to be able to cope in heavy traffic, everything he's done to date screams Heath Shaw.

Can he make the step? I certainly wouldn't write him off but it will be a waiting game, very much along the lines of Nick Suban of Freo.
