Brandon Ellis

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Your mention of McCarthy and me in the same sentence was a whole lot more generous than my comparison of Chimp and Brandon, EtR. But I can live with it. ;D Nice finish, btw.

And anybody who says "riffin on" reads that "Bespoke dandy" James Ellroy. He's the grandest failure IMO. And what can be grander than failure? (You're only a hero when you fall.)

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

'My Dark Places........My Dark, Dark places', now there's a piece of work.

Robert Hughes once wrote, "The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize".

Maybe why Cotch practiced that missed goal so many times in Sydney last year ? ;)

Brandon Ellis plays with intent. He will be one of the 'rocks' , that we will build our football club on.

Great call. Ellis will be one of those blokes who teamates love looking across the room and seeing before you go out to battle. They know that he will give his all. Not your A graders but solid footballers who can play the game with a team first mind set. But they make the team based on footbaling ability first and foremost.

Joe Misit, John Blakey, Chris & Brad Scott, Don Pyke, Tony Evans, Jude Bolton, Mark McVeigh.

Some great reading on this page. Had a grin on my face the whole time. Thanks for the entertainment, keep it up boys

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Great effort by Lester to blitz the time trials this morning.

To have a second year player come back and in tip top shape and win the trial is a fantastic effort.

Sure is SCOOP. Massive fan of this kid.

I expect you will be saying the same thing in about 12 months time about Vlastuin. ;)

Fantastic effort indeed.

Ellis is underrated IMO and I genuinely believe that he has a very high ceiling of potential.

Anyway I'm off now to watch clips of Ellis kicking that sealing goal against the saints - one of the best highlights of the year for me.

I don't quite see it Skilz , looks a good solid footballer to me , just don't see what role he will play , other then a 3rd rotational mid, he's a 16-22 for me at this stage

Agree from what i saw in his 1st year showed me this kid is gonna improve at the rate of knots he's quick off the mark well faster than most give him credit for, can run all day, hard at it very robust, uses it well by foot on both feet and contrary to what CC said will be more like one of our top liners in the years to come than a 16-22 player...

That he is mate, just think Ellis has enough strings to his bow to be one of our top liners, one thing he has in his favour is a desire and passion to be the best that he can be, in his first year perhaps a little top heavy but his body looks a hell of a lot leaner with pics shown on Richmonds Facebook page...

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Take note Supercoach/Dream Teamers!
The boy doesn't fumble, runs all day and is a good kick.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

He's an ok kick. There were quite a few ropey ones mixed in there in his first year.

Brandon did well in his opening season but he was just going by seasons end. Looked very fatigued in some games but not unexpected from one so young.

Good that he's made endurance his priority and I look forward to seeing his progression this season.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Strikes me that he's going to be one of those players that while not elite, will be a solid dependable performer. The type that when he gets the ball, you don't panic because you know he wont screw it up.

Conca is another I put into that category. Solid performers to complement the cream we have in Cotchin, Lids (and maybe Martin if he can get his head right).

A couple more notes on Brandon Ellis.

A facet of his game that we have not explored yet is is marking in front of packs. And rightly - nobody wants to see 18yos fed to adult monster forwards. Ellis can get air, he is fearless and the ball sticks in his hands. He can hold space. And he thrives on punishment. His aerial game will come to the fore.

He lacks explosive pace, is clean at ankle height but not elite. (Better at calf height - this matters.) Therefore not likely to make an inside clearance midfielder. But he'll do the miles. In time he will outstay them and the game is moving to endurance - fewer interchange players covering more ground over more time. Endurance is much about will.

His kicking is technically imperfect but he will raise his eyes and look for a hard target. (He doesn't do this much yet because he has not mastered the pace of the game, and learned to allow for his lack of the stuff.) He can execute.

The coach, although a much heavier specimen, probably sees Ellis as a very similar player to himself. Ellis is made of the same stuff. He will get a go.

There will be a lot more pressure for a game at Richmond next year. And he will probably get a bit of 2YB. But if Brandon can keep his body right he will give us something special over time. Effectiveness.

And last, the point of my earlier post about Shirley:

Ellis had a little highlight this year. The glamourous and brilliant Cotchin beat Gary Ablett jr head to head. That doesn't happen. Ellis may never do anything like that. But he got his own moment. Nobody lays Gary Ablett out. Doesn't happen. Ellis gave him a huge start in terms of ability and experience, not to mention mass and (physics) momentum, and cleaned Gary Ablett up. It's almost as rare as beating him head to head. Lester's moments are not as glamourous as a god's but he does and will have them.

Anybody who cares to think about it will tell you that Trent Cotchin's success is (and will be) based on his relish of small successes. Ellis has that in common with him. I feel like I can learn a lot from either of them.

What a write up - hope he's half as good !
