Physically, the way they move, the shape, they're alike. Shirley was (?) 185 and 84. Thought he was a monster. Ellis is 184 and 84 and will tell everybody who'll listen that he's a monster, a fiend. Pipsqueaks who think they're giants. It's a head start on a football ground.
Let's not lose site of Shirley's record. Are blokes who start in the midfield in preliminary finals and consistently beat their opponents dime a dozen? (I reckon maybe three of our players have done that once in the past 29 years.)
Shirley built a fine career largely on a quality that has been rumoured to be decreasingly important for as long as I can remember. But is crucial. Shirley was indomitable. He would not be beaten.
I saw Shirley play his first game. Back Pocket - Escort Cup? (can't remember the opponent). I think he was 19. He beat the glamour. But was scratchy in skills and slow. Rumours of his physical grandeur lingered only in his own mind and that of the glamour. A checkered career from there. Football kept kicking him in the guts and he kept getting up and fighting tougher and better. Some people are made of harder stuff.
But Shirley had a limitation that cruelled him. Pace? Pace is overrated. He couldn't hurt on the counter. Brandon can.
Everybody on the Richmond list should hope to succeed the way Robert Shirley did - none has. I think Brandon Ellis will surpass him.
