Brandon Ellis

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Ellis looks very good. Once he gets more games into him, bye bye jackson! Once we draft another mid to add more depth, with Cotchin, Ellis, Martin, Deledio, Foley, Conca, (Mid from the "superdraft"), (Mid from another team in the 25-26 bracket) well be flying.

Another good game from Ellis. Each time he takes to the park he is looking more comfortable. Very composed with ball in hand and I can see why Dimma said that he'd like Ellis to realise they want the ball in his hands more often.
Like I said last week after the Carlton game, his disposal by hand and foot fantastic for a 2 game player.

I was impressed with his stats from last nights game as well. 10 kicks 8 handballs 5 marks at 72% efficiency. The kid knows how to spread away from a contest hence why his unconstested possessions were at 16 last night.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

like hardwick said in last weeks press conference, " this kid needs to understand we want the ball in his hands"
played like that was drummed into his head during the week, definitely looked more comfortable in possession

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Kids going alright, looks ok to me.

Happy with him got mongrel, got some smarts and got skill.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Looking pretty good for a 2nd gamer, struggling with the pace of the game at times. My fingers are crossed he will develop into a good player very quickly, it is the only we he we going to get better.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Looks OK so far.
He has played against two very good sides who move the ball very quickly and has stuck to his task well in both games.
Disposal good too - we need him !!

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Apart from his skills he seems to have a focus about him. Very business like - very in the moment. Very Batchelor like.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Conca, Ellis. 2 very good pickups. Have to add to these guns during the superdraft. Good core of solid, good user players developing.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

2nd goal to Collingwood was terrible by the Tiges.
Upon looking at the vid it looks to me like the rookie made the error but you never know what the team rules are.

1st bounce up was perfect defensive structures....
Lids protects goals side which is where Swan wants to run but Dusty has him next to him anyway. Everyone else is manned up beautifully (Tuck has Pendles) so when Beams wins the ball Houli tackles immediately and ball goes out of bounds. Then this is where the breakdown happens.

Collingwood push Toovey up from the wing and no tiger comes up. Ellis notices it (shows he is thinking) but leaves his player from the previous contest (Blair) who is in a dangerous position to go to Toovey. Ellis tries to inform the others but Martin (who is not concentrating now and loses Swan by that crucial meter (*smile* by Dusty) and Lids (whose Job is to protect the goals side like last time) have their roles. Pendles drops back towards Toovey and Tuck covers him (good play).

Ball comes in and Lids probably realizes that the danger is not goal side so sprints to the front but has the bad angle and Bang.... easy goal. Dusty was lucky Swan didn't get the goal cos' that would have looked terrible the way he dropped off him.

I assume in this instance Ellis must stay with Blair and it is our wingmen's job to come up and take the guy hanging out the back. If noone can come up then Tuck who dropped back to cover Pendles has to choose to go with Toovey or Pendles if one breaks away but Ellis had to stay with Blair because he was the danger guy.

I'm not trying to be critical of the young guy cos' he'll be fine but it is these types of decision in key parts of the ground like this that really hurt you and you have to expect them with rookies.

See vid here.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Good vid. Classic example of team defence going pear shape at a stoppage.

Ellis made the wrong call but at the very least he is being proactive.

I would like to see who let Toovey just push up. Someone must have been close by.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

This kid seems to be finding his way at senior level, but I do worry about one aspect of his game.

His attack on the footy is ferocious, but he tends to stay on his feet too much. I know that sounds weird, but in each game so far, I have seen him get his legs taken out from under him by a player diving on the ball. Against the Dees it happened to him a couple of times, once virtually head on.

I trust our coaches are working with him about how to protect himself, because I can see him getting a badly broken leg if this continues.

Geez, streaka I like your analysis of his performances but dont be too cynical. Ellis looks an absolute gem already. So good in his decision making, hits targets, positions himself well around the ground. Ellis and Conca going through with Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Foley we are going to have serious depth along with Grigg and Tuck. Replace edwards and jackson with a gun experienced mid and we will have one of the best midfields in the game.

I'm not being cynical. I am concerend that the way he attacks the ball leaves him open to injury.

Remember how Rance used to go in head first a lot. He has ironed that out of his game, and now doesn't get concused every second week.

Ellis needs to learn how to go hard at the footy but in a way that does not expose him to injury.

The last thing we need is another Nathan Brown type injury.

Needs to learn to throw better jumper punches and put Davey on his arse.

Davey going for the youngest bloke on the pitch about sums him up.

This. An hour with Jake King will fix that. And it confirms what I've thought abvout Davey for along time.

Strong game from BE!

Fun Ha!

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

My only small issue with him is whether he is quick enough, not sure yet.

There was one incident in the 3rd that was just a small thing but says a lot about the kid. Melbourne were coming out of defence and they kicked to his opponent who was behind Ellis but was in a much better position to mark. He went back and stretched to get a touch which spoilt the mark but his opponent still had the best position to take the ball away on the ground. Brandon's 2nd effort to dive and push the ball out of play was terrific. It was just in front of us and was really appreciated by the crowd and also by his team mates who came to him from everywhere.

The kid has a great attitude, he HATES being beaten. We are getting some tough nuts in the back half now. Ellis, Morris and Batchelor are all as hard as nails. Hardwick clones.

Well said Sintiger, but can I add that that there is quick of foot and quick of mind, and I think Ellis' mind is certainly quicker than his feet, which I hope in time can compensate for his lack of leg speed.

Tested very well for vertical leap. His problem is with pace from a standing start, moves well when in motion. Appears to compensate for slow start up speed with very clean and quick hands and mind.
