Woah, woah woo ... elite forwards ??

sheesh.

Garlett & Betts are elite small forwards IMO, nothing wrong with that statement. Would love either of them in our side.

Garlett kicked 48 goals last year as a 21/22 year old after starting the year with 30 games experience. He kicked 39 goals in just his second year. Betts kicked 50 last year after kicking 38 then 42 in the preceeding 2 years. If that is not elite as a small forward your standards are crazy high.

Milne is probably the benchmark for small forwards of the last decade and his best haul in his career is 61. He kicked 56 last year.

The other thing Betts/Garlett bring is pressure, almost 4 tackles a game compared to 2.5 from Milne.

Lecras has kicked 58, 63 & 47 in the last 3 years. He would be regarded as an elite small forward. Last year was the first year he started applying defensive pressure averaging the same as betts/Garlett in the tackle stats.

A guy like Didak kicked 41 in his best ever season in 2010, albeit he also played some periods in the midfield.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Good post Big Cat. They'll again cause us some headaches.
Speed being the key issue that's caught us out in the past.
Morris may well go to Fast Eddie but who keeps Garlett in check?

Grimes to Garlett?

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

How about Arnot with strict instructions he'll be subbed off after 20mins but he needs to stop Gartlett for the match in that time ?

Good call.
But what about if Kruezer/Hampson, Waite and Rowe all line up in the forward 50? With Grimes taking Gartlett we are effectively 1 tall defender short.

They've also played Casboult in all their preseason games and Thornton played more forward than back last year.

I forgot about Thornton. But I guess where he plays will depend upon whether Jamieson plays in Round 1.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

All of this depends on whether our midfield can get on top. If we can restrict their movement into the forward line, which I believe we can, our defenders will be better placed than previously to withstand and negate the likes of Betts and Garlett.

Of course we'd switch it around a bit then.

But if they play all them plus any others we will have a field day running the ball out at will.

Great post. I think Garlett is a super footballer. Even better when he came off the rookie list. He is one of the most underrated footballers getting around. The perfect small forward.

Yep. He is the one for me. Will be a good test for Grimes.

Dayle has apparently been dropped out of the junior squad he was in. They mentioned it on SEN the other night in the context of the recent discussions about drafting aboriginal players. Is that the games they are playing? Pretty poor if thats the case.

Yep, that’s them. The Eagles and Dockers are masters of making sure players get through to them.

If we have a pick around 10-14 this year I would take Dayle in a heartbeat.

But on Ellis, I can see him playing some solid minutes on the wing this year.

So are you saying the Eagles or the Dockers have manfuctured the removal of Garlett from the AIS so that it scares clubs off him?

Batchelor could play tall on a Thornton or even a Waite with support of Eevaarn dropping back too. Batch could also go to Garlett but that would be a challenge given how slippery Garlett is and despite how well Batch reads it.

As Leysy mentioned, with some better users coming off half back now, Carlton would be crazy to go too tall up forward because all we need is a contest and we run the ball out.

Not all. But what I am saying is the Eagles and Dockers use that information in a very smart manner to try and get a favourable outcome.

As they should, all clubs need to be better adept at manipulating media sensationalism to serve their agenda. With all the pseudo-science and psych-testing on teenagers these days, the situation is ripe for a little manipulation.

The Bombers have taken the top spot Scoop. They did it last year with Heppell & they did it this year with Elliot Kavanaugh.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Ellis might not have had a lot of disposals last night but he didnt waste them when he got the opportunity.

He will be a long term player for us.

Maybe, but from the few games I have seen I understand why a guy who is super fit, solid build, has good footy brains and is an elite kick still dropped to pick 15 in a compromised draft. He seems to be a bit in between in speed and athleticism, I actually see him as a shorter Jake Batchelor type but with better disposal. But Jake's advantage is he can probably take more contested marks as 3rd up because of his height.

Looks like a solid pick at the number we had and the type of player we probably should have gone for because we need depth but I don't see him as the type who'll finish top 5 in a good teams B&F.
