Brandon Ellis

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Very impressed with this young boy. I think he has played himself into the team for round 1. 5 tackles today. Shows he is a hard worker. Good pick by the tigers.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Impressive isn't he. I'd say he's barely being coached. He's just got it.

Yeah, he's got it alright!

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Pick 15 in a weak draft - not bad I reckon. Saw on the web that Toby Greene was one of the best on ground in the final of the kids match - that game is always going to be the battle of the drafts.

Another 20 or so touches and 5 tackles. Will take the Deledio HB role nicely.
Get him in your DT's too.

There is a guy by the name of Reece Conca who has his eye on that set up sweeping role. With Houli locked in and Conca to come back, if you play Ellis as well that is 3 shortys back there and none of them can play on Betts/Garlett etc.

Think there's a good chance conca could start on a wing. & there's also three bench spots don't forget, either Ellis or Conca would be a good spot to start here

Doubt we will see much of Conca back there. He's ready for the midfield.

Last year was for learning, and he is a quick learner. Midfield rotation for Conca.

He'll get in there occasionally but I think they'll use him behind the ball. He won't go forward like Martin and Cotchin will when they are off the ball and as long as they play Lids, Foley, Grigg, Jackson and maybe even Tuck then he'll have to go back because the only one of those who might is Grigg and Conca is a far better set-up player than him. If Edwards plays as well then he'll have to play wing or HF so unless you guys believe that a few of those others are getting dropped then how do they all play up the ground? I actually think he is a unique player for us in that he'll just accumulate possies behind the play playing a high % of game time being that reliable sweeper while the rest of the mids push up the ground and/or rotate more off the bench.

Its not a back 6 anymore, that's just the way we read the teams. We play a back 7 most of the time with players from the midfield rotations going back there as sweepers. I suspect that Conca will be one of those, along with quite a few others, but he won't be picked as a defender. I think we will see him effectively playing on the wing but playing midfield behind the ball rather than midfield-forward like Martin does.
We haven't really seen Conca forward yet . He actually failed to kick a goal in his first year and looked a little nervous in front of goal.
Did he play forward at all as junior ?

Yeah, that's true. HB and wing are pretty much interchangeable these days.

We play a lot of 7-man defence anyway. Against Geelong we had an extra man all day (normally Grimes). And a lot of centre bounces we had an 8th guy (Maric, King or Nahas) who would then try and go forward.

Few years as a sweeping half-back, and one year as a mid. He actually has very little experience as a midfielder from junior ranks. Up forward for a guy as good by foot he seems to get a bit frightened of the big sticks - some guys do seize up when they have to shoot.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

did anyone else see ellis try to sheperd houli and run at chapman and bump him? definetly shows signs of toughness for an 18 year old to bump a solid chapman

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

Something would be majorly wrong if Dea or Morris play rd 1 in front of this kid, no doubt this boy has all the tools, unlike the others, however Morris or Dea maybe better at putting Betts into the 4 th row

not quick enough at all. Good experience? what when he gets 5 goals kicked on him..i suggest we play ellis on much more average small forwards and get experience rather than his first afl game on one of the afl's best small forwards.

Re: Welcome Brandon Ellis

1m.15 left on the clock in the 2nd term showed this kids talent. Blind turn out of a high pressure situation and executed a nice block for his team mate after dishing off. Was a joy to watch.
